July 7, 201213 yr the market might be ripe, but XP10 is not. The defaults already push it to the limits of Vram usage and performance. With 10.2 and 64-bit a different game can be started. However, there are a lot of great sceneries already avaiable. The ones by leblegle have already been mentioned. At the moment I am very happy with http://www.x-italy.it/ in combination with italian osm2xp buildings (http://www.x-plane.i...p?f=101&t=15638). I can't use it a lot because of the Vram limits, but short flights do work- Highly recommended. Maybe the best freeware photoscenery available at this time. There's more. My custom scenery folders is 132 GB large and covers 4674 customs airports. Let it be 10% of that wich could be rated "very good" to "outstanding", I'd say that is a lot. * 2010 MacPro, 27' display * Snow Leopard * XP10 *
July 7, 201213 yr If you build it (scenery) they will come, I don't care how much that can cost. I've been keeping my eyes on XP-10, I'm just waiting for the 64-bit version and scenery from 3PD (I don't like plausible world), I think XP-10 is the sim. with the most potential to be the best one, the foundation is there and it just need to be ironed out in some area like distant blurry, AI, clouds visual including other stuff. Like Woweezowee (if this is his real name) said with the 64-bit XP-10 will be able to handle some very complex scenery, we can already by GPU with 4GB of memory (single card), fine tune the multithreading part of XP-10 so we can use as many core we want (cause 6 and 8 core are already available X 2) and with all of this I think the sky is the limit for us simmers and 3PD.
July 7, 201213 yr Does anyone run some sort of service that copies freeware on to a HDD or similar? I certainly like the looks of a lot of the scenery but as I have found in the past and I am finding right now with the reunion download it can be painfully slow. No reflection on the people who made it of course but for new people wanting to build a collection and have not already accumulated a few years worth it is time consuming for sure!
July 7, 201213 yr Sure. It is time consuming. But is it different with any other sim? I remember that me and some other people ran such a service for FLY! that started right here at AVSIM. Must have been around 2000 or 2001 - can't remember exactly, I had a different account here back then. (of course we shipped CDs at that time, not HDDs - lol) ;) @Alain: It's Markus. ;) * 2010 MacPro, 27' display * Snow Leopard * XP10 *

I think, if I'm interpreting correctly, Dropbox does this exact thing. Google Dropbox and see if that's what you need.
July 7, 201213 yr Hi Goran, what I meant was a service where someone has a collection of stuff that they will give you a copy of everything on a HDD. I am only talking about freeware of course. I have done this before with collections like old time radio where it's time consuming to collect it all yourself but some guys will put it on your hdd and post back.
July 7, 201213 yr Commercial Member If someone has a collection of software (freeware), and you both have a dropbox account, the person with the collection can link to your computer through dropbox, put all the software in the folder that dropbox creates for you both, and whatever is in that folder on his/her end gets uploaded to your computer. 2GB storage is free. Everything up from that has a small cost per month associated with it. Developers use Dropbox all the time to send files to each other. Much more convenient than sending files through email and cheaper than FTP.

Remember just because an item is freeware, does not give you authorization to redistribute, so before you do something like this, you need to get permission from each developer of the items you plan to distribute this way, if not already authorized in it's on EULA. Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
July 8, 201213 yr Hi Tom, I know that this is the case for some freeware and I am not looking to provide a service myself. I am in the same boat as a lot of people relatively new to xplane where something like this would be handy. It was great back a number of years ago whem simtel, walnut creek etc would put their archives on a cdrom for you.

I totally agree, the italian photo scenery is gorgeous ! I've already downloaded nearly every tile south from Roma. Caution: it's very big ! (detail level 17). Thanks for the link to the osm2xp buildings. I had a very outdated version. Waiting for XP10-64 to take full advantage of my 680 GPU without crashes due to RAM limit.
July 8, 201213 yr Thanks for the link to the osm2xp buildings. I had a very outdated version. You can even find a newer version of the OSM2XP buildings. A member from the Aerosoft forum made the Europe conversion with OpenStreetMap data from end of may 2012. The link to the 1Gb file is in this post: http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/52478-openstreet/page__st__40#entry384806 Happy flying. Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -

Hi Pascal Thanks for the tip - I have a problem with the zip files... I don't speak italian but it says something about having to rename the files before unpacking them. How do you do that? In Win 7 it seems impossible to change the extension... Sorry for being thickheaded :-)
July 8, 201213 yr Hi Howard, I am getting X Plane as soon as i get the computer from the shop as they are building it, and waiting for some vid cards i bought from E Bay. I am not switching per say but going to enter it's world of helicopter flying. Apparently the flight models for certain helo's are great. Graphically, I must try it before commenting, as i am a staunch Orbx user. That being said, X Plane scenery can be easily modified (so i am told), and really like the night and free way's. I think I will really enjoy using it once i get over the interface and learn what is what. Getting into it with a positive attitude. Putting it on it's own SSD! Nice to see you here! OK guys, I'm an avid FSX simmer and more or less happy with my setup. However, I am never one to say never, and while I initially didn't consider XP10 I am now actually open to at least the idea of considering the new platform. I have to say, I get pretty fed up with the blurries and low frames at some airports and it seems I spend most of my time tweaking and fiddling! So, can anyone provide me with an idea of the benefits of a switch to XP from FSX. I have to say that while I see a lot of good scenery, lots of it appears to be photosceneries, which I don't particularly care for. I don't like the clouds in XP10 either, which IMO look awful. So what is the opinion of anyone who has moved from FSX and can offer a very objective view point, cheers fellas...
