Stupidity of pilots on display

Featured Replies

I agree with the two posters above. Also, I had the pleasure of living in Sao Paulo, Brazil for 5 years. I can tell you it's a beautiful country with beautiful, friendly, people. It certainly isn't Western Europe or Australia. They probably don't abide by the law as we do in our "western" world. But does that make it a bad place? In my opinion, not.

I also imagined some gov't official related to that new building thinking "let's make it a glorious opening." He calls a friend at the air-force and they drum up two pilots to do a flyover, and possibly their boss, possibly the pilots thought "let's give them a 'bang for their buck' and make a nice sonic boom." Who came up with that idea, we may never know. But it doesn't really matter. As I said in a previous post, calling those pilots stupid is just wrong in my opinion. Especially coming from somebody from the staff.

I honestly don't see any of my posts as being nasty. Perhaps the OP thought he'd get a bunch of replies of people agreeing with him and was disappointed by the replies. But nasty?

'nuff said. ;-)

Hi Matthew.

Maybe you could have avoided the word "stupidity" in your tittle, especially when it is associated with a nationality.

And since your avatar mentions "staff" and "reporter", some (most?) readers expect you to separate facts from comments or opinions.

My suggestion (if I may) : stick to the facts and let the readers draw their own conclusion.

Hope this helps,

Bruno

PS (edit) : By the way, what makes you think they were "supersonic" during this pass - as you mention in your second post ?

Agreed, Im sure it was not intended but it does sound like a general slam against all Brazilian AF pilots.

Yup, due to the title it can easily be taken as a slam against all Brazilian AF pilots. I am sure that's not the intent.

mcbellette,

I've removed 'Brazilian Air Force' from the title and have left it as 'Stupidity of pilots on display'

I remember watching a documentary on the Thunderbirds, where they were talking about an airshow they performed at in South America, which I am pretty sure was in Brazil, where the government wanted and gave permission for them to break the Sound Barrier during the Airshow regardless of the risk of breaking windows (Which they did), so maybe these pilots were given the same permission!!

Thanks

Dear sirs,

Pilots are not stupid. They knew what they were doing. This was a protest by postponing a purchase of fighter jets for the Brazilian Air Force. The Air Force has tried for 16 years to acquire a new fighter to replace the old Mirages and F-5. In all these years, the federal government has postponed such a purchase. However, several planes to transport authorities were acquired. The Air Force is not an air taxi company. These pilots left to fly their Mirages now in December. Perhaps this was his last flight. So why not send a message to the government? There is a process in the Supreme Court to hear a corruption case involving former President Lula. Do you understand now why the windows were broken by the Supreme Court?

What exactly is an Avsim reporter anyway?

Rob Prest

Dear sirs,

Pilots are not stupid.... etc...

Looks like a reporter didn't get his facts straight. Thanks for pointing this out, Juka.

Valeu cara! Muito obrigado. :-)

Were the jets in the vid going supersonic?

If so, no wonder the windows broke, but if not, the architect's to blame for not fitting stronger windows..;)

It certainly sounded like a series of sonic bangs. I'm well familiar with the sound of low-flying jet fighters as I live only a couple of miles from the Spadeadam Electronic Warfare training base in Cumbria. They frequently come over our house at a couple of hundred feet.

We're on a hill and fairly isolated, so I reckon they use us as a sighting marker when they're practising radar-dodging. They don't go supersonic as they aren't allowed to, and you hear a kind of high-frequency white noise as they approach, then an amazingly sudden doppler shift to a low rumble as they pass, and the house shakes. The planes in the video didn't sound like that.
