Slow Climb Rates

Featured Replies

Since my recent reinstall the other day I have noticed some frankly painful climb rates. I have no idea why this has started to happen. I am not doing anything different to what I have always done. It takes forever to get to cruise height with a climb rate of between 300-700 feet per minute when you get above about 12000.

Does anyone have any idea why this has started to happen because I can't work it out. My active sky settings have not changed and well, neither has anything else. It is most frustrating.

Any guidance on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

That sounds very low. I would check TAT. Could also be that you have stopped stowing away your landing gear after takeoff, or perhaps the landing gear doesnt get stowed away for some reason

Landing gear was up fine and temps seemed ok too. Will be keeping a closer eye on them tomorrow though. Puzzles me this.

James. I had something very similar. Turned out that I installed FSCopilot so I could use Vatsim, and it has a weather module in it. It was actually INCREASING the outside air temp as I climbed. If your egt is abnormally high, as you show some ridiculous outside air temp, that could be your issue. There are checkboxes in there that let you disable the weather ,then you may need to set into FSX settings and set it to handle the weather, until you find another wx generator you might like.

I know weather has been mentioned a bunch here, and someone mentioned weights. I'd argue both are likely the case, but remember, this doesn't have to be a weather bug. It's completely normal for planes to have a harder time getting up to altitude in the summer.

Google density altitude and you'll learn all about it. Take a look at TOPCAT (if you have it) and try entering in a takeoff at 0C and a takeoff at 30C (make them both the same otherwise: no derates, same flap setting, and so on). Which one will have a longer takeoff roll? The higher temp. Why?

Memorize the following lines and then go do them:

Put on running clothes/shoes, go out your door and start running. Assuming the outside temp/humidity is the same where you are as it is here, you're going to have a tough time breathing. Why? Hot air is less dense, and more humidity means I take in more water than I do air when compared to cooler, less dense air.

Why does this matter?

You need oxygen to function. Engines need oxygen to function.

If you're finding it harder to breathe and stay cool, so is that engine.

So, if you've been flying in the Virtual United States recently, do remember that we've had quite the heat wave over the past few weeks. This will affect performance at all altitudes.

This is temp related but is really beginning to annoy me. I am climbing as I type. All was well until I reached about 24000 then she slowed to about 700 fpm SAT read -11 and TAT read +16

Then at 29000 the SAT drop over a period of 20 or seconds to -24 and TAT read +6. During this 20 sec or so period my vs went up to about 2000 FPM. When the temp stopped dropping the VS dropped back down to 500-600 FPM

Same thing then happened at 33000. SAT dropped to -34 TAT -5 quick burst of VS before dropping again to something pathetic.

And just now again at 37000 SAT dropped to -47 TAT to -19 Quick burst until temps stopped changing and now climbing at about 200 fpm.

This has to be to do with active sky 2012. I have no idea why this has started to behave like this at all

It just took me 30 mins to get to a cruise of 38000. Never used to take this long.

Like I have said I have not changed my active sky settings. I am in DWC mode and always have been. I did play about with the wake turbulence settings a week or more ago but all has been restored to norm now. I also tried the standard setting instead of DWC but also this has been changed back.

Anyone with any ideas on how to stop this because it really is driving me mental.

Regards

If you're departing anywhere near the MTOW, a 30 minute climb does not surprise me in the summer. What cost index are you using as well? If you're using 50-500 as a cost index you're going to be climbing a lot slower due to the increased airspeed.

I am aware of these things chaps. No where near MTOW. Flying light on that leg actually and my cost index never goes above 30. Normally 28 as set by my VA. The more I read about this it seems to be an as2012 thing when in DWC mode. What confuses me though is why it has only just started to happen. Next flight I will try Standard mode again and see if the temps update correctly. If I try without AS there is no issue so it must be a temp update problem.

Like I said though why this has only started to happen since I reinstalled my 737 is beyond me. Really has me most confused.

Thanks for your input so far though guys. Much appreciated.

It's definitely temp doing it. +6 for a TAT will do that to you and it's wrong at that level. I use AS2012 and never, ever, use DWC. I don't like what it does to wind directions, perhaps it plays games with TATs aswell?!

Enroute now from VHHH - RJOO and using Standard mode in AS2012 and everything seems a lot more sensible. I would love to know why DWC started acting this way or at least affecting my ngx in such a manner however.

Nice little light show out the window at 33000. weather a bit shaky off the coast of china at present.

we all know that, but 300fpm isn't normal

Try hitting N1 during vnav climb. I've noticed that the A/T will be in "arm" mode during climb...

This is an incorrect action and should not happen- ARM annunciates in VNAV descent, not climb. N1 should be automatically commanded on by VNAV during the climb- you shouldn't have to do it.
