Thoughts on flying the Carbon Cub

Featured Replies

Simply keep using it with the 5 deluxe aircraft and the detailled Hawaii plus the huge Alsaka... That's what I am going to do - there simply is NO ALTERNATIVE yet at the end of the tunnel....

I was just thinking over the last few days how exploring and learning Alaska will keep me occupied for at least a couple of months, so new scenery was not a priority for me. I'll get my money's worth out of it and the Cub, just like I already did for Hawaii and the other planes.

Too bad there won't be more, though.

Then you go into a correct/over-correct/re-correct cycle that can send you way off the center-line. Even worse in windy conditions' date=' where you can feel like you need extra hands.

Makes you wonder about those videos where pilots drift these things down to a stop at nearly walking speeds, cause with the flight cockpit version, that would be borderline miraculous for me.

Whereas with the no-cockpit, version, I could actually do it.

That long stick must give a lot of very fine control to the pilot.[/quote']

Two questions to more experienced Cub pilots:

- How do I zoom the GPS map in or out?

- How can I verify that the elevator trim is at the take-off setting?

I do enjoy this plane, but am still finding my way around the cockpit (is there documentation somewhere?)

How do I zoom the GPS map in or out?

I haven't bought the CC yet, but I'm pretty sure the GPS is just like the one in the Icon, which means there is no zoom feature. You should check out this topic to get a working GPS in your plane:

As for elevator trim, if it's like other aircraft in the game, there is usually somewhere to hover your mouse over to get a trim reading. Either the trim control or an indicator.

Unfortunately, you don't. Check the top-down view for more zoom options, F12.

As far as I know, there is no trim control in the cockpit. The only way is to watch the checkbox during the checklist sequence. It's probably reset correctly when a job is started or when you change planes in the Hangar.

In my case, once I've got the plane trimmed for level flight at whatever power setting I'm going to use, I leave it there and don't touch it. I was climbing for an assault on Mt. McKinley and added up trim, but ran out of trim long before I ran out of the need to get the nose up. I had to hold it up with the joystick.

OK, thanks! Too bad about the non-zooming map, but no biggie.

Now, regarding the trim..

I find that I use a lot of UP-trim for the landing, and if

I take off later, the plane pretty much leaps into the air..

I would assume that the real plane has a trim indicator, somewhere..

I'd expect at least a control somwhere that you could see where the trim was. If it's there, I can't find it.

If you search youtube for "cub short takeoff" you'll find some amazing stuff. The tail comes up before the plane has moved a foot, and the plane is off the ground in about 2 plane lengths. It does pretty much for me too, without up trim.

If you find that the moving map is "too bright", that the terrain features just run together, be aware that pressing the 8 key at the bottom of the panel will darken the screen. Probably useful for night flying as well. Pressing the 9 key will go back to full brightness. I find that full bright makes the compas markers easier to read.

Alway land into the wind when possible. Some times there is a smaller cross wind runway. I will count even if it is not the marked runway.

Oh yeah I was so excited to fly the cub after watching

:) first trip I made was to Valdez to do some (rather lonely) stols hehe

The Valdez videos were exactly what I had in mind when I wrote that! The very first video I saw of a cub takeoff wasn't from Valdez, and when I saw it I yelled loud enough to alarm my wife. :D

Although the placard on the fuel gauge reads "22 gallons usable" it's only 20 per tank.

If you're low on fuel and flying along and you suddenly lose power, switch the fuel selector from BOTH to the fullest tank. I had 2.0 gallons in the left tank and 3.9 in the right, because I'd burned off left tank fuel to balance the rolling forces. I could get about 1600 RPM running with fuel selector at Both and one tank empty.

It looks like the fuel flow on the Cub is around 4 gallons per hour. I was flying low and had RPM set to 2100 or 2200 most of the time. That's 10 hours flying time; hope your bladder is up to it.

Would anyone in their right mind really spend ten hours cooped up in one of those things? I am not a claustrophobe, but I might develop into one, after that.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I remember a real pilot reporting that our fuel tanks will outlast our bladders.

I spent 30 hours straight on a drive from Washington D.C. to Dallas once. It wasn't claustrophobic, but cars are a lot roomier. I did stop for fuel and other things a few times along the way. And it was a Mercedes 300D. It helps a lot when you don't have to fight the car mile after mile, as my previous car did during those trips. This was the only time I didn't have to take a break to sleep.
