Is anyone close to cracking this thing open?
Rock, Paper, Shotgun brought me here, after a long long time Excellent news - reinstalling as we speak. Since Flight 'happened' I've been navigating around in old mil jets and WW I lawnmowers but it'll be great to come back fresh to 'the one that started it all'

Regarding the C-46 and others........
The Steam figures do tell us enough that the supposed objective of Flight to get lots of new players in has failed rather dramatically. Steam is the largest platform in pc gaming and a huge percentage of users is online when playing games, so the statistics there are a pretty accurate representation of active users amongst the targeted crowd. We also know that the MS Live numbers were horrible, with online user counts lower than low budget indie games on the xbox. And Flight lacks the features to put a serious dent in the existing sim crowd which is also confirmed by reports we all read. If anything, existing sim platforms benefited from Flight, esp. as it is now discontinued.

Can't move the forward camara back anymore
Yeah but with that camera it looks and sounds like you're flying with all the doors and windows open. Rain coming in, sunflare and also the wind noises, plus it looks pretty horrible imo

Regarding the C-46 and others........
World of Tanks has 1000s of paying customers online at any given time and an active community. That cashflow easily funds a cheap game like that through high volumes of microtransactions. People are worryingly happy to pay to progress and win in those online games. And ** will be integrated in there. In contrast, atm there are 4-500 players online in Flight on steam (that on average probably spent less than what hawaii cost in the sales). And even though the ** planes have a cockpit and working guns does not mean the game and planes are of better quality at all tbh. I've seen wot and it's very basic arcade stuff and I expect ** to be like that. Also I'd be very surprised if the premium models outsold the basic planes in Flight. So consider the market versus the costs of modeling the premium planes rather than looking at the cost of licensing these 60yr old designs. As said previously, it's licensing the current planes by private company where I can see it getting expensive, esp. for ms. edit: since when is w o p a dirty word? ** means world of warplanes to be clear

Curtiss C-46 Commando available in Flight
I find best power is at edit: 80% prop RPM. It certainly accounts for some mph. How much I don't know because I haven't gotten the fat bird exactly trimmed out and once it has caught some speed it does not lose it immediately. I can't determine the exact number from my rotary knob though. I mostly do this by sound, and just as with the Maule and RV6 the engine must sound like it's happily chugging along. It does not sound like a revving lawnmower anymore but does not sound like it's having trouble staying awake either. Well, that was helpful!

This thread is a little windy
Let me guess, it's 12 knots / 14 mph as indicated by the plaque in the cockpit? :P Because that's the worst that could happen!

Ooh nice :) I have to fly more at Hawaii, so much to see there still

Curtiss C-46 Commando Confirmed
Argh, I can't believe I'm actually buying this. I have way too many MS points left not to, and watched way too many Ice Pilots episodes to not completely love that thing. Without any gauges or dials it's just like a digital RC plane though. So I hope it turns out looking and sounding good, as that's basically all you get. This thing would have been absolutely perfect for Flight with decently modeled systems and flight characteristics :vava: Anyways, I don't know how the fuel system works in the real plane. But does the left engine stop if the left main wing tank runs empty? Probably won't be modeled anyway though...

What are we giving up by moving from Flight to FSX?
Any time spent tweaking, installing, researching, button pressing, knob turning or switch flicking is time not spent flying. When flying = fun, you'll be giving up having a fun time -_- And, let's be honest. There's no way we'll give this up: (pics just don't do it justice, but clicking it goes a long way)

Rise of Flight: Iron Cross Edition -80% €7.99 @ Gamersgate
oops, sorry wrong topic...

Rise of Flight: Iron Cross Edition -80% €7.99 @ Gamersgate
Realistic and detailed WW1 flight sim from a likeable indie developer and well worth the €7.99 at -80% in the Gamersgate Summersale deal - You download the free game directly at Rise of Flight and register your serial in the game to unlock the extra planes and content. don't know how long it will last and it's probably available for the same amount in USD and GBP in the respective region sites. Gamersgate is a legit and very nice site (coming from a customer, no affiliation of course). (reflink)

Some info from Mathijs Kok on flights demise.
I think you are right and I wouldn't trust the man too much on this subject. Also I think it's rather unprofessional to be throwing mud like this, he is confirming a lot of the bad image MS has gotten but it's not necessarily the truth - Aerosoft is a publisher for FSX devs. What would have happened with them if MS succeeded in winning over developers to make all kinds of nice stuff for Flight...

Possible next plane?
Still proves that a lot of people choose fun factor over the cockpit!

AOTD - Kamuela and Upolu VORs intersection...
I tried asking them but I don't think they could hear me over the screaming Next time I'm wearing a hooded anorak so I don't get all the flying bits in my neck...

AOTD - Kamuela and Upolu VORs intersection...
Nice post, that makes it easier to find as with the given headings flying FROM the MUE VOR, the instrument will give you backwards feedback. The headings do depend on where you are coming from. I flew in from Hilo Int. on direct course to MUE Kamuela and from there outbound on course 322. This meant I had to set the TO heading of 304 for the UPP Upolo Point VOR. Edit: On second thought, I might have done this wrong, haha. I got there though Good thing the VORs are close together because it would have been hard to find in the giant cloud that hangs ominously above the mountain at Pu'u Omi reserve. My four passengers were already getting a little unruly in the back as they weren't accustomed to flying in these weather conditions and they were very eager to get to Kona Int. I fear the little detour will go straight from my own paycheck if the boss finds out :P

Do we have to go there again, really? If you don't want to give it the dignity even when it's down and out, please gloat in private so the rest of us can enjoy the forums please.

Do I still buy TrackIR after the demise of Flight?
Scrolling up once should be zoom lvl 1.0

Yoke and pedals - your choice?
Yeah, I much prefer a joystick as that's what is in most of the stuff I usually fly - and I have no problem pretending a Cessna has F16 style controls :P There's also practical reasons, like space, no need for table mount, a hotas throttle with lots of buttons and I think it's easier to build a stick to a reasonable budget than the yoke. I think it's harder to build nice and smooth action with a shaft built into a plastic container. Then again I never used a yoke much. I found got a pretty in-depth and by a very honest, if rather critical, guy on YT.

The Speed slider above the window with the curves acts like a modifier to the curve. Lower this to lower overall speed. Then finetune with the sliders if still needed.

I don't think these numbers are universally applicable. The reaction of the camera really depends on how far you sit from the monitor and what feels comfortable really depends on how wide your monitor is and how far you are willing to move you head around. What I did was make sure the leds line up exactly with the camera (do it in the 3d display view and select camera). I calibrate the middle so it's less responsive, but without distinct deadzone. It has to be precise enough to select knobs with the mouse without jerking and more or less in the middle when I look forward without having to recenter the TIR. Then in the graph in the advanced options I check what the maximum angle is that the software reads when I turn my head while I can still see the monitor nicely. I make the outer parts of the graph increase a lot more while keeping the middle more smoothly. In the 3d orb I check to see that I can just about see 160-170dg. In the camera.cfg I raised the panning and pitching speed to be more close to zero and tweak the overall responsiveness in the TIR software.

Do I still buy TrackIR after the demise of Flight?
I just realized why I liked my flight the other night. It was not so much about what I was looking at outside as it was that I was not constantly looking at the gauges inside. Instead, I was Looking outside to get a bearing and looking inside at the gauges with a purpose. Trying to feel what the airplane needed and only glancing at the gauges when I was looking for specific information. It's subtle for sure but it makes all the difference. It's too easy to just keep staring at the gauges when they're fixed in front of you while there's not much else to look at. But that's not really engaging, and if a pilot next to me in a little Maule was flying like that, I'd pinch him to make sure he was still awake (alive?).

Those kittens are safe for sure! And I think that this might spark another one of your inspirational posts, Hook :P It really works a charm. Only setting up to do was installing the driver and launching Flight. Then to tweak the curves a little, the interface is a little awkward but is easy to understand and make it do what you want. I copied the "smooth" profile and edited the dead zone out and with a flare towards the end of the range so I get good precision in the middle and a nice view all around. Right now I'm having lots of fun landing in even stranger spots and just seeing sights and buzz some people's homes at 5AM. Ofcourse I'm looking around and bobbing in my seat like mad everywhere I fly to really test it but I know I will like it still after the novelty has worn off. Ofcourse it's useful to look around and better be able to judge a landing but the effect is also a lot more subtle than you'd think. It's modeled like your actually moving your head around in the cockpit. So instead of 'zooming' you really bend your head forward to look at that panel, or look around that strut to see the next turn in the tight gorge you are going to take. This really is the only game where I can just enjoy a nice flight on beautiful spring day flying through the mountains of Kodiak island, over the glaciers and snowy forests down the river to the stunning fjords... I guess Flight's still got it

Mine should be delivered tomorrow. And indeed, if it's not ALL that, I will start with the Dutch cats (and dogs hamsters and parrakeets!) because there sure are some vocal advocates from around these parts :p0503:
