What are we gaining by moving from Flight to FSX?

Featured Replies

I really enjoyed getting out of Hawaii, and Alaska has interesting scenery. But to be honest, if Flight had offered everything FSX does and more, but limited us to just Alaska and Hawaii, I'd be flying something else occasionally.

etc etc etc ad nauseum. Third party developers did not *MAKE* FSX. FSX was already quite good before the first third party addon was created. Yes, it's good that they exist, and they give us a considerable variety for those who can't make up their minds what they want to fly and some of it is very good indeed... others somewhat less so. I've got two, count 'em, TWO third party aircraft, neither of which is the 737 NGX. I've gotten every version of Active Sky (and the original Graphics X which is now bundled with it) to get real world weather (mostly to get winds aloft data which was not available in the Jeppeson real world weather download), I got CumulusX for thermals and soaring, and I just bought Accu-Feel last night. I've downloaded some freeware but don't use it, but have used parts of it in other aircraft. That's it. I don't have hundreds gigabytes of of addons that I'll never use like some people. As for scenery areas, if I wanted to fly in one area, I'd still be spending all my time in Flight. When I fly, I fly everywhere, and almost always in connecting flights. And never in airliners, and usually at 140 knots, and without time compression.

I think that's the same for most of us.

I did a couple of very long night flights recently in FSX. They really messed up the lighting in SP2. If you have any night screen shots from SP1, look at the stars. I remember being able to leave the brightness/gamma alone when flying at night with SP1. With SP2 starts may begin to appear at around gamma 1.8, with the effect still not quite as good with the screen much brighter.

And while I'm at it, I'd like to extend my personal thanks to all those third party developers whose products WILL NOT WORK with SP1, so we're stuck with the crappy lighting of SP2. Come to think of it, my FSX crashes did not start until I installed SP2, after at least a year of flying with SP1. Thanks again, guys.

Amen.

I don't need a freakin' procedures simulator. I need a FLIGHT simulator. I've got better procedures simulators than FSX. Flgiht simulates FLIGHT better than any other program on the market. You should try it some time, you may be surprised.

It was pulled because people tried it??

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Operative word is "some" if it were such a hit it would still be on the market. Sorry for you and others they pulled it, time to move on, the game is gone.

Many others have committed on this subject and the bottom line is simple, the producers of any product cannot make you buy it. You know the old saying, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. MS thought they could dump the simulation in lue of a X Box type game, a gamble for sure, but I think arrogance was the driving force behind Flight and a feeling that we MS (as w/ so many products/companies over time) can direct/control you the buyer/consumer. NOT SO lesson learned I hope. Especially in such a narrow market, one which I believe the subject matter takes on a slightly more serious subject beyond slaying dragons etc.

Too bad MS did not build on an already successful product instead of trying to re-invent the wheel.

Agree, but you put up with it and have to overlook it as theirs no choice.

I have heard that in XP10 they have gone mad with the night lighting but have not had the patience to get past the jumble of set up screens to try it out.

Well, allow me.... in xp10.10 it looks ASTOUNDING!!!! Only problem in the night, right now, is in the sky with the rather inaccurate Moon phase/rise/set algorithm, but I have asked Austin to fix it :-)

Do it! I was / am a great complainer about some aspects of x-plane, but I must admit I am really enjoying every bit now!!!

Let me try a comparison if i may :

let's say Flight is an apple, a very, very tasty apple, in fact you've never tasted an apple as good as this.

With FSX you get a whole BOX of apples, different species too and they taste quite good as well but non of 'em taste as wonderful and juicy as that ONE particular apple you bought from the 'Flight' greengrocers store. You will never forget how exceptionally delicious it tasted and how exceptionally frustrated you got when you were told that the distributor of this particular apple, in his ultimate wisdom, decided to discontinue the distribution of it.

You still have the whole BOX of apples down in the cellar of course. The beauty of that is that you can choose another species everyday, one taste better than the other and some even come close to the taste of that ONE particular apple but not quite... It makes you sad to fully comprehend that it will take a looong time, if ever, to experience the superb taste of the 'Flight' apple again and that it will remain a dream only, for the time being, to have a whole BOX of this kind of apples down in your cellar.

Personally, i'll just dream on while i take another bite from one of the apples out of the BOX in the cellar. I just LOVE apples. :smile2:

cheers,

I will, and will let you know my thoughts once I've given it a fair try. Right now time is In short supply, and the sun is shining which is a rare treat here.

Well said. :)

Perfect! Yet, while bringing my apple box from the cellar, I broke an ankle, when it slipped from my hand while climbing the stairs, the apples got widespread and now they have spots and either I take them all as fast as possible while recovering from my ankle or ask a nice groups of dedicated permaculture producers to bring me a box, a little box from their farm. I am enjoying those apples, and my old unforgivable apple as well (biting it once a day, cautiously, not to get it to the end....).

Ah! BTW: That permaculture farm has a name - "X-Plane" - Bite one of those if you're in the mood to, but take time to appreciate it's taste ;-)

Sorry, I just can't do it. I have tasted all the other apples before and just am pulled back to that one really tasty apple that I keep in the frig. I take another bit out of it every day. I think it must be a magic apple because it never seems to disappear. It is still there every day when I open the frig and just tastes better every day.

I can't wait until tomorrow!

The problem with Xplane for me...... Is That I just don't believe it. There's something weird about the "Florescent light" daytime lighting. And to me, the clouds don't really look very much like clouds except sometimes, at certain angles, etc.

The plausible world is a work in progress that right now hits me wrong in too many ways except at night. I try to give it the fairest chance I can, but then I encounter water that doesn't really look very much like water, (except sometimes) and odd sun reflections off of that "water" that don't behave anything like real sun reflections.......

It's subtle maybe (whatever) but it all adds up and reminds me that I am in a mathematical/procedural/technical simulation that feels a bit cold to me. I think for instrumentation and tube-liner type people its probably perfect. Up at ten-billion feet its easy to overlook peculiar visual cues, but down low and slow........ not so much. (except of course, at night)

I keep trying X-plane again and again; and so far I just keep bouncing right off of it. (thunk!)

When looking through forums, I've seen other people expressing similar misgivings, and the answer is usually the same as for FSX; Buy this or that add-on, tweak this and that; go into the innards of the game with a screwdriver and pretty much rebuild it yourself.......

Leave Flight, and gain all of that back once more! For some, this is going to be a good thing. These Sims (FSX/X-Plane) are like familiar old cars people have been repairing and refurbishing in the basement for years.

Maybe even I can get back into the routine again some day (but I am kinda hoping not)

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I've used X-Plane demos since they became available, long ago. Bought version8 and got version9 as a present, near the time I left simulation completely, until FLIGHT.

When version 10 became available I tried it, but meanwhile FLIGHT was released, I have been using it and ELITE only, but tried to get back to FSX Gold for a couple of weeks, without success because I was really looking for what I wanted to happen with FLIGHT in the future: Have more airplanes, have more scenery areas, have configurable weather, etc...

FSX simply does not like my PC, or I am completely unable to understand how to correctly tweak it, but the fact is, x-plane 10 even with pretty much maxed out is smoth as silk in every aspects. Yes it certainly has limitations, but a team behind it can be contacted and responds promptly to may questions/complains, even if sometimes I do not agree with the answers... X-Plane has potential, offers from the vanilla install a LOT MORE than FSX Gold does, and, has helicopters too!!!! very nicely modeled, like you will not find unless you invest in DCS KA-50 (which models a single one).

Together with FLIGHT (and ELITE), X-Plane10 is now a new passion, I must confess :-)

I have to agree with HIFlyer, I have the same observations from using Xplane. And as far as smoothness with FSX I have an overclocked i7 920 3.2 paired with a 560 and 6 gig of ram. a couple of tweaks and select add ons for GA and I fly at 25fps but its smooth. So Flight for what it is and FSX for much better variety. Getting ready to build a new i7 but so far If i stray from the Flight+ FSX combo it will be to Prepar3d and not Xplane.

FSX is just closer to the whole package at this point and that's what I'm gaining.

Ok so I downloaded the demo of xp10 now I remember why I gave up on it last time... It recognises my Saitec rudders but nothing else... After 20min of clicking I've given up for now as I need to do research and to spend time with the one who must be obayed! ... To be continued.

That's not ELITE the old space game of old is it?

And to keep in line with this thread so far not gained anything and lost 20min. Flying my fav apple :)
