777 2D Cockpit?

Featured Replies

if you people had watched Robert's presentation from the flight sim conference in Munich (youtube) you would remember that there is actually a pretty good chance for a 2D main panel on the 777. (isn't that all 2D drivers really need anyways? - the rest can be VC except for the MCDU popup)

I put together a PC for $800 that runs FSX, PMDG, and various addons like a dream and with EZCA I get a VC with the ease of 2d panels. I used to be a die hard 2d guy mainly due to its user friendliness but once I discovered EZCA I'm fine with a VC if there is a 2d pop up FMS.

The good thing about this thread is that we can do it all again when the new 747 comes out :)

Paul, some people just don't have the money or the budget to upgrade computer gear.

Doesn't matter how economical you stretch it out or how much you plan it.

I would also guess that a lot of people don't know how to build their own pc, so they have to rely on pre-made systems from electronic retailers, which cost more then 350 no matter what the currency.

Clearly, you don't rememebr the old days:

Ha ha! Good find!

Sadly, I remember days much older then those. £1,500 has been the cost of a just below cutting edge desktop for as long as I can remember. In 1984, that would get you an 8Mhz 8086 with twin floppies. In 1988, it was an 80386 with a 10Meg hard disk! Up until sometime around 2000, my usual reason for upgrading was that I had bought a £30 game that my PC couldn't play anymore. Sometimes I could afford it, sometimes I couldn't, but the rule remains the same, "If you can't pay, you can't play!".

Paul Smith.

You don't have to respond to every question.

You dont have to shout or use bold letters either, its kind of impolite and besides at least he signs his name to per forum rules.

Too true,

I remember paying £/Mb RAM ~ 1998ish.

First machine I build had WOW 100Mhz processor and 4GB hard-drive was the largest you could get.

...Unable...

The rule is: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate - in that order.

You should already have the tower freq in standby or set on another radio. If you can't make a frequency change on final then you're already behind the airplane... I understand there's a few circumstances like single pilot fighter jet or helicopter where it could be tricky, but a real pilot can do it easily. Even flying a commercial jet in FSX with one pilot - it's not difficult to be ready for the next frequency...staying ahead is key :)

Exactly. When you're flying a route you've flown way too many times, you'll start to memorize the next frequency, too (though it changes occasionally depending on staffing and combined sectors, etc).

My JYO-CHO flights are always 122.975 (JYO CTAF) -> 125.05 (Potomac Consolidated TRACON) -> 120.45 (PCT) -> 132.85 (PCT) -> 124.50 (CHO Tower). That's a 70nm flight. In most cases, on VATSIM, you can go hundreds on one frequency. Moreover, you can cheat on VATSIM because you'll see IAD_TWR and often only one frequency (larger airports have a couple for tower), so you can set that in the standby a while out.

As soon as you get handed off to the new freq, swap freqs and place the anticipated freq in the standby as soon as you can.

On VATSIM, too many people take almost up until their initial altitude to call after departure (and then get whiny that you didn't clear them higher before the plane leveled off 3 seconds after their call). I'm imagining most of the issue is people not placing the departure frequency in the standby side.

I hand fly a lot so its a fun challenge to stay on top of things until 18K when I usually turn on the AP but I always have the frequencies pre-tuned unless more than one center in the same airspace is on, then I simply wait for the proper freq.

Sometimes I don't get a frequency change until my leveloff altitude anyway, but that's another story (and one of my vatsim pet peeves)

I admire that... something I can't do in big planes... for complicated DP's I'm usually on autopilot from departure to approach clearance...oddly enough I prefer to hand fly the visual approaches.

Autopilots bore me, that's why I'm not much of a long haul guy. If its a interesting STAR or SID with way-points that are very closely spaced then sometimes I completely hand fly those procedures but I'm still on the ball with the flaps and gear thanks to the keyboard.

to all folks, I think PMDG should make 2d panel dye to the simple fact that NGX VC is a truely FPS eater even with the latest hardware that is overclocked to their maximums and that is true when adding weather engines, complex sceneries, traffic and airports services .........etc so the simmer should not ignore the benefits of having 2d panels so one can get up to 70% performance and fluidility unlike the stutter and freezes of VC, in addition flying with 2d panels give you more control, stability and concentration on flying without waste your time in zooming , changing views and returning for the optimal position for landings and approaches.......

The VC is more realistic and isn't that the aim here? My frames sit well around 30fps with AS2012, Orbx, etc. My hardware is over a year old now and still runs the NGX fluidly. I haven't used a 2D panel in an add-on for a few years now and have no problems flying and navigating around the flight deck.

I agree. I wouldn't pay too much mind to it, though. He seems to be on a 2D campaign based on this x-post from the NGX subforum, with a topic dedicated to the "fact" that 2D is far superior.
