FSX 64 bit

Featured Replies

One last question. What order to install FSX? I do have the acceleration pack. Will I have to install the SP1 & 2 if I use this. It has been too long since I did all that. I just can't remember.

You will ruin your FSX installation if you install either SP1 and/or SP2 if you've already installed accelerationpack. Both SP1 and SP2 is part of the accelerationpack.

Kind regards

It is true, I was told to do just that by one addon company to fix a problem with the aircraft.

SP1 will install fine, then when you try SP2 it will tell you that you have a newer version.

Then your system will be stuck at SP1 until you re-install Acceleration over the top. I managed to reconstruct the things it overwrote thankfully.

But not recommended, do not run Service packs on top of Acceleration :)

Lol! Which addon company was that?

I do believe though that SP1 is a prerequisite to installing Acceleration or SP2. So If for some reason you are running FSX RTM, to install Acceleration you need to update to SP1, then install Acceleration, which includes the SP2 update within it. Do not install Acceleration over SP2. If you already have SP2 installed and you want to install Acceleration, you need to uninstall the SP2 update, which should bring you back to a state of FSX with SP1, then install Acceleration. Conversely if you have Acceleration installed and you want to to just have SP2 for some reason, you need to uninstall acceleration before you can install the SP2 update.

Thanks

It is not a prerequisite.

Acceleration contains all the updates, and will apply them accordingly.

hmmm, a 32 bit App would be limited to 2 gigs VAS without a largeaddressaware flag no? Despite FSX being a 32 bit app I could have sworn with SP1 it was made /LargeAddressAware which is what gave it the 4 gig capabilities Tom describes.:

Per MSDN:

Probably the biggest advantage of 64-bit Windows is not the larger registers but rather the expansive 64-bit address space. Recall that even when the /3GB switch is set, 32-bit programs receive only 2GB of address space unless they indicate their willingness to cope with addresses above 2GB by passing the /LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag.

This flag means the same thing on 64-bit Windows. But since 64-bit Windows has a much larger address space available to it, it can afford to give the 32-bit Windows program the entire 4GB of address space to use. This is mentioned almost incidentally in Knowledge Base article Q889654 in the table "Comparison of memory and CPU limits in the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows".

In other words, certain categories of 32-bit programs (namely, those tight on address space) benefit from running on 64-bit Windows machine, even though they aren't explicitly taking advantage of any 64-bit features.

personally moving to a 64 bit OS was the best move I ever made for simming and is the very reason i don't have to worry about disabling .DLL's to avoid OOM errors or anything... I would PERSONALLY highly recommend it.

Will FSX Acceleration run well in 64 bit? Better than 32bit? If it will, then can I leave it installed in 32 bit while I try it out in 64 bit..

Thanks,

Ralph

64 bit with 8gb of ram or more is the best tweak for FSX :-)

Keep this going. I am learning a lot as I am sure others are also. As to date I still haven't found the problem for my install. I will keep working on it as time permits. I will have to say that it still wants to install in the x86. I am persistent in that it will be installed else where. I just need more time.

Thanks to all,

Ralph

64 bit with 6 GB of RAM works great for me. Windows 7.

My preference is for two files - a 100 meg Custom, fixed size on the C:, with a second, sized at 8 gig - again fixed size, Custom - not system managed.

Hi Paul.

I am setting my Page file... And I did the exact same thing as those two image that you had linked.

On my C: drive I did 100 and on my second SSD drive where I had the FSX. I did 8192 (min and max)

But why that 100 on C: Drive? Wouldn't the system keep using that first?Does it know it can use the second page file which larger?

PS. This did not help. It did pretty much the same as before... OOM... pretty much the same spot. KORD, I have the FSDT ORD and Fly Tampa's Midway and the Aerosoft Chicago city.

I go from one to the other and then I get OOM.

Yeah - it does use it, Manny, but then moves on to the bigger space. Actually 8192 is too big - there's nothing that we could do with the siome, or any other app on the PC that will use that size. A better size is 3 gig (3172), and that's where it sits now. I've changed the pic to reflect that. You'll never have an OOM with that. The 100 MB - well - when Windows starts it looks for a swap space, and if it crashes duing that time, it has to have someplace to put the crash dump - 50 would be plenty, but ......disk space is only pennies nowadays.

Yeah - it does use i

No Luck Paul.. I can't seem to avoid OOM. Hmmm...

EEmPoseeeblaH!! You're running Windows 7-64-bit, with FSX, SP2, right?

if you have acceleration, than the service packs are included with that..after that you need to think of the fsx world as an onion, install any mesh addons first, then things like Ultimate terrain X and Ground environment X, then after those i do single airport sceneries, such as Fly Tampas St Maarten, then comes Active sky 2012 and REX essentials (AS 2012 for the weather engine, but REXe for the beautiful textures, after that ill do any AI traffic addon, right now im LOVING My Traffic X 5.4. Then after that you can start adding addon planes and various little things. A complete reinstall of FSX and tweaking it to just the way i like it can take me around 8 hours, and the tweaking part can be never ending.

also when you reinstall and add on new major additions like the ones listed above, it is a good idea to reboot your system after each big addon is done installing, that way you are starting "clean" for the next step

Affirmative.

I think, I may have to remove the Aerosoft city packs.
