Another XPLANE UPDATE is out 10.10RC2

Reinstalled XP10 to test out this beta...

I'm getting some significant "popping" in of the highway lights (not roads, but freeways). Miles long segments of highways suddenly POP into view and on when flying at night. The freeway lighting is also unrealistically bright as compared to the rest of the roadways... has it always been that way? (I did all of my XP10 testing during the daytime, so I don't have much nighttime XP10 experience)

I'll stop there before I get too deep into my criticisms, but the new autogen and a refreshed OSM data set (and/or the ability for end users to do it themselves) CANNOT COME FAST ENOUGH.

No problems on my rig, could be your setup and drivers.

Doesn't your highways pop? Mine sure does. Is it a setting I've missed?

You might try to set your world distance detail to very high, if your FPS will stand it and you don't already have it set to that. If I am in an area that is intensive and FPS take a dive, I will set the distance detail down, if in a less intensive scenery or to follow roads, I set he distance detail to very high, and you can see the roads far enough ahead that they don't just pop up like that.

Flying is the 2nd greatest thrill known to man

The 1st is landing.

Last night I flew up to 65000ft for the first time in the Jackson Hole area (real weather but almost no cloud) and was a little disappointed to see that the higher I flew there was a kind of reality bubble on the ground where everything within was sharp, then suddenly outside of it a blurry mess. It's like there's 2 LODs on the mesh, sharp and really low-res and blurry. (reminded me a bit of FS9 water seen at altitude)

To be honest not very impressive and I expected the scenery to gradually fade into the distance instead. However... I am using Alpilot's HD mesh so I might try disabling it to see if that makes any difference.

I missing allot of vehicle traffic with this update. I set the number of cars to Los Angeles but it has no effect. Is anybody else having this issue ?

I did notice cars parked in the street and driveways !

I'm affraid it wont... Anyway, this is the kind of thing I can trade for the detail in the FD...

Now, we also know that a 64 bit version is coming along, so, probably that "halo" will get a better look in the future :-)

Same here. I think they made it possible to actually have very little traffic. I had it on the lowest setting before but after a while highways would still be jammed. I think the traffic would fill up once your computer has resources (like rendering above 25fps), now there doesn't seem to be this filling effect. I am sure they will explain the changes sooner or later. Choosing a higher setting basically works.

Currently giving X-Plane 12.10 a spin on Shadow PC. 10 years with X-Plane now, since 10.20

Things look very good overall. My frame rates aren't actually higher, but they are noticeably steadier. HDR still causes my performance to take dive, but not quite as badly as before. I could probably get away with it if I turned down other settings, but I'd rather have loads of scenery on the ground than pretty lighting effects if I had to choose, which I do. Maybe updating the drivers will help? I have an nVidia GTX460, but I'm on Linux, so you have to jump through a few more hoops to update the drivers. It's not quite as straightforward as Windows.

Speaking of Linux, it's nice to see the hat switch actually acting like a hat switch, although I've noticed a quirk that diagonal movements are read as a separate switch rather than the combination of two other switches, meaning that if you map your view to the hat switch, you won't be able to move the view diagonally, which is a little awkward. Previously I was using a workaround to map my hat switch to the keyboard, and I may do that again since it allows for diagonal movement.

have you tried the new 777 released last week, it reminds me of a mix of Captain Sim and PMDG all in one package.

I've been doing short flights with this aircraft for a few days now and loving it! In terms of systems simulated I actually find it very similar to the LDS 767 which I have on FSX but visually more detailed. I've also found their level of support to be excellent.

Even though the 777 isn't officially supported on 10.10r2 I so far haven't found any problems and everything works as it does on 10.05.

Yes, T7 from Roman and Philipp is a breakthrough aircraft for XPX. Most people just do not realize the depth and complexity of this aircraft yet. It's primarily aimed at the systems enthusiasts and you better get them right, or else be prepared to face all kinds of mayhem aboard. This is just the tip of the iceberg as they say, we've only just begun.

I wish someone could post the definite FPS performance of the T7 in comparison to another jet, preferably the 787. Just put it at KLAX and compare FPS in cockpit between the T7 and another jet - it's all relative of course.

Unfortunately if someone was to do this I don't think it would be of much use to you as everyone's hardware is different. I don't know exactly what FPS I get flying this plane and can't compare it to anything else as it's the only add-on jet I have at the moment since I only got XP10 last week.

It does look very good though, I'd say well above the 40fps mark and possibly higher than 60fps once I climb up to flight levels. This is on a system with a Core i7 2600k, 8GB RAM and NVidia GTX 560Ti 2GB. There's a noticeable improvement running it on 10.10r2.

re: Popping Roads...

No problems on my rig, could be your setup and drivers.

Check out this video... at the 0:50 mark, you will see roads on the horizon... at 0:54, a series of roads POP! into view towards the right hand side. This is what I observed with 10.10RC2, and the current 10.10RC3. (It occurs again around 2:30-2:35 and 2:50-2:55)

Not my video, but it is the same behavior I've seen on my system. Can anyone else validate they've seen this behavior as well?

To wb5okj's suggestion - I do have the view distance pegged at maximum. I don't think this is a big deal during the daytime because the roads blend in quite nicely... at night, however, they SPRING into view in a very unfortunate fashion due to the streetlights.

Thoughts?

-Greg

Hi Greg,

The video is mine and yes, as seen, I also have the pop-up roads even though my view distance is at max. I certainly hope this popping will be resolved in a subsequent update. It would seem that the XPX guys are going to call 10.10 final real soon and work on the 64 bit version is next on their list. So maybe 64 bit XPX might help us achieve the view distance needed to avoid the popping.
