First step - test DX10

Featured Replies

My tentative start on this most interesting graphics 'upgrade' was to check that DX10 was on my setup, as recommended. It is, but a check run produced a black screen. The aircraft sound was there, but no graphics. So I don't know how it would look.

Is this unusual? Could it be that another utility I am using is in conflict? Recently I have installed OpusFSX. Could that be a problem?

Great work by all concerned. I look forward to getting it to work, but I hesitate to move on until this point is answered.

Hi Frank

Have you gone through the pinned setup info and downloaded the shader mods?

I didn't get a black screen when I first switched to DX10 but I had just updated to the latest Nvidia driver. Have you installed the current ones to your system? We have the same OS and I'm using a GTX470 card.

Adam

PS: Also make sure you're using an aircraft which has DX10 compliant textures. For testing I use the lovely Mudry Cap-10 available here:

http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=cap+10&CatID=fsxac&Go=Search

That sounds like it could be a driver problem. I had a similar experience many moons ago when I first tried DX10 Preview. I'd start with the latest stable driver first and go from there. I'm not sure if I read it correctly but it appears you have 2 cards in an SLI config. If this is the case, I've read that FSX is not fond of SLI. I have no idea if this is true or not as I have no experience with SLI.

Hi Chris

I've been using 2 strapped cards for sometime. I get excellent graphics using the help of the many clever guys around these days. Also, I have used FSX ever since it replaced FS9 (or did it?). To date, I've never touched DX10 as it was known to be an incomplete job right from the beginning.

and, Hi Adam

I took the very first step and downloaded the modified Shader, but the next step, after reading Steve's cautionary note, was to test the existing FSX's DX10 option. When it failed to produce any picture, I reverted to DX9 and it was all good again. Applying the "if it ain't broke..." maxim I am hesitating before taking the next step.

Thank you both

Frank

Frank, I'm not sure why your DX10 is not showing anything because out the box it is a preview and it should work. The most obvious thing in DC10 is that you don't get any progressive taxi and one 'fix' prior to Steves wonderful work was to use 'follow me'.

Sounds like a driver/graphics issue, or, that for some reason your Initial install of fsx didn't take completely. I take it you either have installed fax gold and sp1 and 2 or have the acceleration pack ? Does it work with a default plane and airport?

You're confusing me now. I use FSX with Acceleration. That combo covers all the SP bases. It has been running superbly - long 737 flights, etc.

I deliberately loaded the simplest for this test - Ultralite at Friday Harbor as in default/default.

Do you by any chance have Bojote's Shader 3.0 mod installed (DX9)? If so you need to change back the following line in the FSX.cfg file to get DX10 to work with it.

Change

ALLOW_SHADER_20=0

ALLOW_SHADER_30=1

To

ALLOW_SHADER_20=1

ALLOW_SHADER_30=1

This shouldn't affect the mod as Bojote changed all references to Shader 2.0 to 3.0 in his mod, so nothing should interfere with it.

Thanks

Tom

Thanks for these ideas, guys.

The Dxdiag check shows DX11. Now I'm really confused.

I have used Bojote's tuning but I forget where those important lines are. Where would I find them?

Monitor use is OK.

The DX10 Shader Mod was not installed correctly. I would look for PaulJ's General10 folder and use it to replace the one you have. Then run Steve's DX10 Shader Release 3.0 again. If it is not installed properly, you will receive a black screen. Look up in the pinned topics for the General10 folder from PaulJ.

Jim

"DX9", "DX10", "DX11"... These are names of graphics standards, Jonah - basically all are libraries of functions that allow applications, games, etc., to talk to the graphic card drivers, so that they can create the necessary code to push the picture data onto a monitor. Each numeric iteration represents an increase in complexity and function as newer code and hardware becomes available. At the time FSX was being developed DX9 was the current

Hi Jim

I haven't installed anything yet. I did the 'Firstly - "The Fix" download. Read the readme. Started FSX; ticked the "PreviewDX10"box; restarted FSX to see how it looked - and got a black screen. Not a BSOD. I was in window mode and the screen inside the window frame was black. The engine sound was audible.

How do you have those monitors arranged, Jonah?

I now run full time in DX10 and have seen this black screen one or two times. I also run the 460 but only single. I have not been able to prove it but I think it has something to do with that little screen down near the time in the status bar. When I have it I just clicked in two or three times and FSX appeared and worked with now problems. It is almost like FSX loses focus or something. Go back to DX10 and play around with it. Dont think that this little glitch will hurt anything at all.
