September 16, 201213 yr While I agree that X-Plane has done a great job with Roads, Traffic, and ground lighting - I fail to see how this makes me want to give up on FSX which I've spent thousands of dollars on. To me, this is just eye candy.
September 16, 201213 yr How many hours of real time have you got intype and what kind? I don't mean to be smart-alecky or mean, I have been flying for several years and don't find them to be that bad. I see all kinds of big iron pilots flying this thing, working with this sim, not to mention engineers, aircraft companies, and the like and they seem to get along OK with it. I've used MSFS since its inception in the mid 1980's, Pro-Pilot and a multitude of other sims that I have forgotten, Don't forget FLY, still use FSX and Falcon 4, and again I don't find this one to be all that bad. Hi WB...back in my 20's I was able to keep my Private ticket current for 6-7 years before giving up on it for a combination of financial and medical reasons. Back then I only flew 152's and 172's....although since then I became a licensed aircraft dispatcher ( I attended FlightSafety Int'l out of KLGA) and have had the opportunity to jumpseat and even fly in alot of different types...but...I feel that flight dynamics in pc software are a highly subjective thing. Yes, you can talk numbers....but when it comes to "feel" it will always be debated since everyone has a slightly different perspective with this...and no matter what type of pilot they are seems to make no difference from my experience. For me, I "feel" the planes handle in a way that reminds me more of an Atari video game at times more than it reminds me of real flight. I guess in a way Im feeling disconnected from the plane if you know what I mean...could be hardware or any number of things but the planes are feeling way to light on the controls for me and the ground handling is to me, silly...i almost have to use full rudder to keep it tracking straight down the runway with the wind. The there's the vc graphics which are obviously below par if you compare them to other modern day standards. The sounds (which are crucial to simulation but all too often ignored by devs) are also leaving much to be desired for me. There's a long list of things that need to be sorted, again IMO but that's not my point here...my real problem with xplane i suppose is they way it's being marketed as some fantastic out of the box retail experience. I don't feel its at that point, not even close. Don't misunderstand me here...im not in anyway bashing the X-plane software itself, infact I feel its got huge potential as an engine to be used for many purposes. What I'm saying is that IMO it makes a MUCH better development platform or "engine" in its current state than a finished retail product for end users. To me this seems obvious but there are always going to be others who will look at me with bulging eyes. Dave Kalin Excel Classes Computer Lessons

Dave, your X Plane experience has been very seriously limited and you have only seen less than 5% of what's available. If you have the demo, I suggest you get Morten Melhaus' Piper Archer. It's freeware and possibly has one of the best flight models around with an exceptional 2D cockpit. It is freeware, but if you want 3D cockpits, then you have to shell out cash. You won't see many freeware 3D vc's as they are not easy to make. No one is suggesting that anyone should switch, but it would go down better if you don't paint all add ons with the same brush.
September 16, 201213 yr Goran, actually this is my 2nd time purchasing xplane. I tried it many years ago back in version 5 and now bought version 10. I think ive seen and tried quite a few planes in it thus far but im always open to suggestion. What can you suggest for me to try? (keep in mind I need a vc and good sounds, but no airliners as I gave those up a few years ago). Been thinking about some stuff from JRollin (such as his mustang jet and some props) but at this point im afraid to throw anymore money around without a refund policy. But Im willing to try something, ANYTHING...if it's really that good. Dave Kalin Excel Classes Computer Lessons

I'm sure there are quite a few other people here who wouldn't mind pointing you in the right direction. Alternatively, if you want, throw me a PM and I can suggest a few add ons in private. I don't think that's against the rules.

Probably because I got my license in an Archer, and the model is just a good one.

September 16, 201213 yr I like these small details. First time I saw the police speeding down the road flashing their lights I really enjoyed the immersion. It's a really nice touch! September 16, 201213 yr As an ultimate low-and-slow (helo) pilot, I'm all for ground details like this - they add a huge amount to the immersion. I don't begrudge people the desire for a 100-percent authentic FMC so they can change their routing while sitting up at the flight levels on autopilot over a distant gray landscape... but remember, not all of us fly that way. What's eye candy for one of us is eye nutrition for another. If we're racking up recommendations, I'll put in a word for the Leading Edge Simulations DC-3, available over at X-Aviation. A great, atmospheric product - and I'm saying that as someone who's extremely devoted to A2A's Accusim line for FSX. This doesn't offer exactly the same level of down-to-the-cylinder-head simulation (I'm not sure that X-Plane supports that easily) but it flies like a dream, has a great VC and sound set, and it's truly a you-are-there experience. Goran can't recommend it because he's the developer... but I can. And I do. Have a look. Alan Ampolsk"Ah, Paula, they are firing at me!"-- Saint-Exupery

September 16, 201213 yr The best endorsement I've heard for X-Plane came from an engineer at work, with whom I had a conversation about the sim. I use a screen shot as my desktop wallpaper and he noticed it right away. He said "I love that program. It's really, really cool", and went into detail about he uses it for various things. I work for a small airplane company. You might have heard of it. That was enough for me. September 16, 201213 yr The Learjet 25 and the Piper Package by Jason Chandler. thanks everyone for some of these suggestions...my trouble is finding the type of plane that interests me... Ralf Maylin suggests the lear25 and pipers from Jason Chandler. Before I spend money again, I was wondering if you could go into a bit of detail as to what you like and dont like about those planes. For instance, are all his props plagued by the p-factor or torque issues ive seen in all other planes where you need tons of rudder on ground taxi?...is the mustang a rocket? (another popular jet i tried needs an ascent rate of 10,000+fpm just to stay below 250kts on climbout). How's the sound sets on them? Can anyone else (who's very picky) recommend Chandlers planes?, if so please chime in! Larry....yes ive been reading about that plane and yes its the 2d only panel that has kept me from it....I understand the model is very nice but I really can't see myself going backwards to 2d now...im just too set in my ways im afraid....would love to try it though just to see the difference compared to most others ive tried. I will continue to keep at it....all i really need is to find 2 awesome x-planes (1 prop and 1 small jet) and then at least I could use this thing alongside FSX.
