Recommendations for a regional plane

Featured Replies

I'm looking for recommendations for a regional aircraft to complement my PMDG MD-11/NGX. I was thinking about the PMDG JS41 or the Leonardo Mad Dog as those two, especially the Mad Dog, seem to be popular. My machine runs both the MD-11 and the NGX quite well so I'm looking for options that are similar in FPS to those two as well as having a bit of complexity (FMS, etc.) to them.

Any suggestions?

I recommend JS41. As a FS addon it is a superb aircraft, what you would expect from PMDG.

The PMDG JS41,is a superb addon, and highly reccomended!

Graphically Leonardo Maddog is a bit outdated, however in terms of systems it's one of the best addons ever made for FS.

Quality Wings BAE146 would be another option.

The Feelthere planes (mainly the ERJ but also the E-Jets, both 'V2') come to my mind. Thumbs up for the J41 too while I don't see the Maddog being that special 'regional' plane as it works in the same regime as the 737NG.

Well, if you don't have her yet, she's worth a look either way and the QW Avro's Rendi mentioned also come in nicely from the reports.

The PMDG J-41 is excellent and highly underrated in my opinion. The virtual cockpit is even better than the NGX's if that's possible, and it has complete functionality and realism across the board, including a full featured and integrated FMC. Add FS2Crew voice and RXP's weather radar add-ons, and you will have one of the most complete and fun aircraft for FSX ever.

Robert Randazzo, CEO of PMDG, has many many hours in the real aircraft, and the flight modeling is unparalled in terms of realism. You cannot go wrong here I promise. :)

While I like the graphics in the JS41, the virtual cockpit perspective is very odd (and I use Track IR!) I'm sure it would be better if you were flying the real plane. But it's quite fast will do 240 kias... I got it for sale off JR.com (edit it was much cheaper at the time but still appears to be $5 off)

QW Avro is a definite gem.

Avro is very good. J41 has more accurate systems but you have to be ready to learn on how not to kill its engines! (Something I haven't learned to do as I have yet to fly it)

Thanks for all the responses. Its a toss-up between the JS41 and the QW 146 Collection for FSX. After reading about both, I'm leaning towards the QW 146, especially as its available from Flight 1 (my vote for best FSX add-on vendor B) ). I hesitate to get the JS41 as I've read its heavier on frame rates than the NGX and PMDG doesn't offer refunds on downloaded products.

Any other recommendations?

I have the JS41 and the QW Avro. I think the PMDG is definitely a more thorough and in depth simulation, with a better VC and sound package, but the exterior model of the Avro is amazing. Also, IMHO, the Avro is just more interesting than the JS41 as an airplane to me. *shrug* But either one would be good :)

Definitely the QW Avro. She's currently my regional airliner, at least as long as I'm waiting for Majestic to publish the Dash and/or Aerosoft to finish the work on the CRJ. Back in FS9 I also loved the Flight1 Fokker 70/100 as a regional bird, but it hasn't got a VC, so I gave her up in FSX (but you could still try the Fokker, for Flight1 has that 30 days money back policy).

How is the JS41's VC on frame rates? I currently have adequate performance (high teens to mid-20's) on the MD11 and NGX. Is this heavier on FPS then those two?

The JS41's VC is one of the most demanding VCs out there. It's definitely the most demanding of the aircraft I own. However you can get it to run pretty well by tweaking some settings in its included config program (set display to medium res, reduce PFD refresh rate, disable co-pilots displays.) After doing that it runs about the same as any other complex aircraft VC for me.
