Help! Z fighting clouds

Featured Replies

I've asked about this before but I haven't been able to solve the problem! It's pretty much the only thing between me and flying nirvana. I've uploaded 2 short videos that show the problem I'm having with clouds around mountains. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it!

This happens with all types of clouds if they touch mountains, cumulus, stratus, or cirrus (if I manually put them there). It happens with any weather engine, even just the default one.

What happens?

I found a possible fix here - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/66695-flickering-clouds-in-mountainous-areas/

It's the RealAir Legacy.... which is a very nice add on that I would highly recommend. Unfortunately this flickering of clouds happens no matter which aircraft I'm using.

So did you follow that link I provided (there's another link within that link)? I know it still is an issue and saw a thread a day or two ago that talked about this same subject and the OP was told there was no solution. But I did find that link and a member here found the solution posted in the link.

Best regards,

Jim

Jim, the flashing cloud fix fixed my flashing cloud problem for a long time. Then, one day they started flashing again. After trying a few things, I checked the fix and found it had reverted back. Re-installed and it has been ok since.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I have tried that fix, where I think you have to change a line from true to false and then delete the shader file. But I think that is for a slightly different problem. In any case it didn't fix my issue.

In my case the clouds flicker only when they touch mountains, and I haven't been able to find the solution.

There is no solution, that's why. I see the "flashing clouds fix" get mentioned almost every time this z-fighting issue is brought up, they are completely separate issues.

This is an engine limitation within FSX. Maybe P3D will have a fix for it in the future.

FSX is so rough around the edges with it's handling of cloud rendering. Another Z-buffer issue that annoys me even more is how you can sometimes see another layer of cloud through the one that is immediately in front of you. Ruins the beauty and immersion every time it happens and there is no known fix.

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to revive this thread from the dead, but for me this is ONE BIG ISSUE with FSX, almost completely ruining the immersion that an otherways properly tweaked and add-on enhanced DX10 running sim can create.

Is it actually completely impossible to find a way to at least alleviate the problem, not to mention a fix?

This engine limitation makes flying with real-weather in mountainous areas (I live near the Alps!) almost undesirable.

Maybe the author of the excellent and mandatory DX10Fixer can shed some light on the issue, spreading a little hope among the masses or declaring this engine limitation impossible to overcome once and for all!

It will probably allow me to accept the flaw and stop looking at it obsessively, although I'm sure those of you experiencing cloud and terrain Z-fighting know how distracting it can be!

I just HATE it :(

Here's an extremely in-depth study about z-buffer I've read some days ago

http://outerra.blogspot.it/2012/11/maximizing-depth-buffer-range-and.html

It is mainly about openGL, but same principles could be applied to DirectX.

I'm going to find out if there is some settings in NVinspector that modify the z-buffer in order to fix the clouds-mountains issue in FSX.

This problem has been mostly fixed by Steve's DX10 Fixer and/or the various commercial weather programs like ASN.
