Question about FSX future

Featured Replies

I have not kept up with all the changes. But if Microsoft has ended Flight Simulation and Flight is not what we wanted, where do we end up in say 10 years from now. Will we still have PMDG 737 NGX and the 777 on our Windows 7 machines in the year 2020? At some point FSX may not be compatible with the newest OS.

Has anyone else stepped up to making a global based simulator that is compatible with PMDG, REX, Fly Tampa, etc?

It sounds stupid, but I just cleared 3 years cancer -free and I actually can look down the road 5 years now. So as dumb as it sounds, this is my favorite hobby and provided me much confort while I was sick. So I really hope someone has an answer . I mean I can fly my current FSX with all the planes and addons for 20 years and still be happy.

First of all, congratulations on your cancer free status. That is more important and anything that happens with FSX or flight simulation. The reality is that your guess is as good as anyone elses. We have no future from FSX, but FSX lives on in the form of Prepar3D so that is one possible future outcome. We have X-Plane that continues to be developed and also rumblings about new platforms from Aerosoft and perhaps a few others out there but I am not sure of the names. My personal guess is that in 2020 we will all by flying Prepar3D because by that time Microsoft would have been out of flight simulation for so long that they will have no need to limit the license to just commercial applications and can open it up to consumers.....guess time will tell.

The world is expected to end this year... not. I think we could see a 737MAXX and 797X (if Boeing announces it). Maybe on a Windows 10. I think I remember Robert saying that they were sticking with FSX for the time being until something better than Flight comes along. So maybe FSX will still be around for 2020.

Perhaps a PMDG/REX/Active Sky/Scenery company merger to create the ultimate FS?

Congratulations! Don't look at 5 years, look at 20. There is no limit.

I have no ideas about where the industry is going .It would be interesting to see what people think I am a real world pilot that can enjoys getting lost in the fsx p3d world. It seems to me that someone is going to step up to bring something new to the table but it must be a huge task or someone would have jumped on the task of creating a fsx type environment. Lots of passionate people here enjoy the flight sim world.

More importantly congrats on your cancer diagnosis , many good years for you ahead. Keep up the good work.

Peter

If only DCS would make a world wide modeled simulator that is tailored for add ons, that would be an awesome outcome.

FSX market is alive and strong. Do I need to remind people of the kind of momentum FS9 had? Addons were still being developed for it well past the FSX release date. Addons have been released for it this year and possibly even next year, but it is finally slowing down.

Developers are still pushing FSX - this evidenced by the fact that people are still struggling to build "super-FSX machines". Many people can get great frames in default scenery/aircraft, but the addon market is still challenging today's hardware.

Some people view Prepar3D as a future. However, some developers/groups are approaching it very cautiously as Lockheed Martin are apparently unable to explicitly license it for "entertainment use", something that the likes of PMDG and VATSIM will ONLY license their software for (legal liability, etc.) As LM want to develop Prepar3D, it is likely that less and less of FSX content will be compatible and unless all developers just on that ship, it will sail away with only half of the industry on board.

But what if FSX doesn't work on the OS of the future? Don't upgrade :P Matt Sheil, builder and owner of what was probably the first self-built 6-degrees-of-freedom motion flight simulator still has a couple of computers running Windows 95 so that the base simulator software will run!

I believe that Lockheed Martin will eventually be able to license Prepar3D for 'entertainment use' at some stage. I know there is another company making a sim for all, planes, cars, boats and even dogs! It's called Outerra. I don't know whether if it will be compatible with the current add-ons we have for FSX and FS9 although I'm sure that the developers can make it compatible if the market is strong.

You can find more about Outerra here http://outerra.com/

We need our awesome developers to do a great platform...

What an interesting topic!

And congratz on your cancer free status btw.

This is actually a topic I've been thinking about too. Currently, the flightsim market is only getting stronger and stronger, and add-ons are getting better and better. But this isn't gonna last forever. FSX will probably be an even less stable program on Windows 9 or 10, or might not even work at all. FSX is gonna last no longer than 5 years from now on, that's my guess.

Where to go now? Well, P3D, if they would sell their products for entertainment too. Or XPlane: XPlane 10 is by far not there yet. Not enough detailed airports. Pretty bad UI, and graphically not that great. But at least they are heading into the right direction, so I'm convinced that XPlane 11 or 12 will be what we're looking for.

I know FSX is unstable and can sometimes drive us completely mad when it doesn't work, and I know we are getting more and more spoiled and we want better graphics and better flight dynamics and a program that's more convenient and easier to use. But hold on, something is on the way. It's just a matter of waiting 5 years or so...

Happy that you are all well & recovered Paul

I don't see anything that's better than FSX on the horizon yet.....until I do I'll stick with FSX! may it be 10 or 20 years, so be it. Doesn't matter if w34 is out then I'll still use w7 for FSX.

Unless Microsoft starts building FS11, or P3D lets the licence go,I think we are gone be stuck with FSX for a long time.

If only somebody could persuade Bill Gates to donate some money for making FS11 :Praying:

Kind regards
R.G

My FSX future - I'd like to think of it as a real B73NG flight deck ;-)

Congrats on 3 years Paul, i myself have been clear for 5 yrs, it just goes to show that not everybody that has Fsx are healthy, that FSX brings some enjoyment to those of us that cant get around so easy.

Personally I believe that Microsoft will publish new flight simulator.Because they know they can make a big profit from us(hardcore simmers)

Microsoft making profit from Flight Simulators is like asking you to work a whole day for 1$. Compared to the profit they make from their OS, FS is absolutely nothing. But you never know of course, I'd like to be proven wrong. At least they have had their lesson with MS Flight: an arcady boring flight game will not work, simple as that. 90% of the people could have predicted that beforehand already, so how could MS be so stupid? Hope they've learned their lesson, and if they're gonna do it again, hopefully this time do it properly and make us a proper simulator.

Arjen Vandervelde

For them to make a profit on Flight Simmers it needs for the simprice to be close to 4 figures $ and it would neet a slice of every addon $. It would have to be similiar to its console $ setup. Not sure how many simmers would invest $500 bucks for a vanilla sim.
