what do you do on long flights ?

Featured Replies

If I am flying an hour or more I will use 4X Time Compression....

Reason Being? Because in the real world if I was flying a 737 for an hour or more I would have a co-pilot with me to keep me company and share duties. In FSX it is just me and that is not realistic and boring. Therefore I have no problem using the time compression.

Real world is different because you have a real person sitting next to you to share the time with.

Good point. Plus, the scenery and weather of the real world are of "higher quality" and vary more.

I boot up my other FSX computer and fly around ORBX VFR, and monitor the long flight. When it needs my attention, I pause the VFR flgiht. :P

Officially retired

Kick on the auto pilot, sit back on the couch and watch tv with the wife while tracking the flight on my ipad so I know when a waypoint is coming up.

I typically run long flights after having tweaked the CPU or gpu and want to make sure the system is stable over several hours.

I have a laptop and I edit photos, upload photos to my blog and and upload videos if I have any to YouTube, I also play the online game Airlinesim. Although I usually do shorter flight, 2/2.5 hours seems Perfect.

Do VFR flight in c172 and go about hour at most before I land and take a coffee break. Been dead reckoning VFR in Utah and Idaho follow mountains, power lines, highways. Have music going in the background and drinking coffee while flying hit pause for doorbell and bathroom breaks.

I try to fly 1 hour flights, I drew up a list of city pairs that were around 1 hour apart ( in the US) and choose one of those.

I do occasionally fly long haul for a realistic flight for such as a B744 or MD11 ( both PMDG planes that can pause at TOD). I usually climb to cruise then leave the flight overnight and come back to it in the morning, where it is usually paused at TOD. I then save that flight, then have fun using FSX ATC with different weather and different arrivals and runways, as well as GSX. So, I really only get to enjoy the descent and arrival phase. Then again, I work long hours and have so much going on in my home life that time for me really is a valuable resource.

Asia and Europe have great wide-body short hauls. The RCTP–VHHH route is one of my favorite quick Asian routes, and is served by the A330, B747, and B777 every day in real life. I have had the pleasure of riding the latter two aircraft on this route in real life. In Europe, I currently fly from Vienna to Zurich to Geneva and back, though this is somewhat unrealistic with the B747 (there was actually an Air China B747 that once made this flight, though!). I hope to be adding UK2000 Heathrow to my collection over the holidays, as Heathrow seems to have a lot of B747s.

Yeah I have been planning an around the world trip trying to hit only Payware or nice freeware. For the most part I can keep airports under 2 hours. So this subject has been something I have been thinking about.

The long legs seem to be - Dutch Harbor to UHPP ( UHPP not a nice airport but whatever), Nepal - IGIA - Dubai - not sure yet. Then over the Atlantic.

I plan to use different aircraft depending on how long the leg is. I decided (while practicing) to use mostly old school navigation planes as that keeps me busy and not bored. J41 mostly (not old school but loads of fun), Otter for small airports, CS707 for long hauls, B377 medium/long hauls.

I will not use EFB or similar (like GPS) but will use Sky Vector (on Laptop). So Navigation, Radios, planning the approach and scenery keep me occupied. Also getting all of the Saitek Panels will be fun programing with those.

Using RC you can pause on when you arrive at approach (encase you fall asleep). :)

But I agree - for me anyways - only real time.

Never. Ever. Never.

Why do long flights if you can't hold them off?

Simply because you will earn more money on long flights if you are using FSPassengers like we do. :)

Thanks Owen, I will add this city pair to my list ( RCTP-VHHH). The Austria / Switzerland flights seem very short but fun. Although I have never flown the route in RL, I love Milan to Zurich over the alps!

Thanks, Bruce

You're welcome. Here are some more Asian flights that I posted on another thread:

There is also Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Singapore, though I do not fly to these areas.

In Europe, there are so many large cities that you can pair together, such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich.

Like some other guys, most of my flights are anything from 1/2 an hour to 2 hours. Once the AP is set, I usually browse the web, look at YT or browse the Avsim or Orbx forum...

While doing long hauls like, 10-12 hours long. I tend to do housework, play my PS3, surf the web on my MacBook.

I enjoy long hauls more than I do short hauls. I guess thats just me ^_^

Thanks again Owen, now I have more places to fly! My RL flights in Asia/Far East have been as a pax into Kathmandu from Bangkok. My country of birth is New Zealand, so as I'm now in the US that is a flight that I take every year or so to see my aging mother and other family, which is also a flight I do in FSX in the PMDG B744 (once again I set-and-forget the AP then resume when the flight is paused at TOD)..... wish I could make the sim pause itself at dawn, the fast approaching dawn on an east-bound flight from New Zealand into the US west coast is an amazing thing to see in RL!

Thanks again, good thread. Bruce.
