  1. Can anyone give some advise on programming Tpm switches. When I program a switch for say speed brakes, when I toggle the switch down it activates the speed brakes, but when I toggle back up, nothing happens. I have to toggle back down to retract. How can I program the switch so that toggling down activates speed brakes and toggling up retracts them? Thanks for your help.
  2. I just finished a new build a couple months ago and went through a lot of these same questions. H100i is an excellent choice. I started with the nh-d14 and the change was well worth it. I went with the g.skill trident 2400, just make sure you get the 9cl, not the 10. I have the coolmaster 932 advanced case. Love it. Highly recommend. Especially considering how large my graphics cards are. My first case was an antec 900 and my gpu's wouldn't fit. You don't need an i7 for fsx. I5 is fine. I went with i7 though for occasional video editing. I was able to oc to 4.6 no problem. I went from a gtx670 to a single gtx680 to two 680s. I get great fps with sliders maxed and hd clouds with the exception of pmdg which slows things down a bit while at the airports. Hope any of that helps.

  4. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Oddly enough when I sat back down to apply some of your suggestions, I no longer had any issues. After two days of not being able to get it to load, it just went back to working fine. I reapplied my tweaks to the cfg and nvidea inspector and its running beautifully. With max sliders it loads in about 30 seconds and is back to running 30 fps steady. Thank you for your suggestions though. I will keep them in mind in case this pops up again.
  5. I hope someone can help me with this. Suddenly fsx won't load past 86%. I can boot up fsx, but when I select "fly now" and it starts to load the flight, it stalls at 86%. I tried clearing the cfg and nvidia inspector back to default no change. Please help so I can get back to flying.
  6. I perfere three screens but there is a noticeable hit to performance. When I switched to sli that really seemed to help though. I would go with 27 over 24 if I was doing it again. I would also go with 1200 over 1080.
  7. In the past two months, $6,500, but that was an all new pc and cockpit plus a lot of add ons. I actually tracked the costs because next year I have to sell the whole thing and wanted to know what it's worth.
  8. I have 24s on my fx tri stand and it looks to me like there is enough room for 27s. Send me your 27s and I will test it out for you :-)
  9. Thank you for the explanation. What I don't understand though is how 2000*(cl/Mhz)=ns is wrong though. It allows you to generally compare two rams which advertise different speeds and latencies. That seems practical because until you buy them, what other way do you have of comparing apples to oranges. What you are describing if Im understanding you, is that the ram MAY be faster after you get it home in your machine and put it to use. Right now I am using G.Skill Trident 2400 cl 9. Do you believe I would notice a diffence in fsx if I switched to 2600 cl 10?

The information I got about the ram came from this article at AnadTech: http://www.anandtech...igp-with-gskill The idea is to find out which is truly faster, such as the example of cl9 2400 vs cl10 2600. The misconception is that the higher the MHz the fast the ram. But cl is an important, often overlook factor. According to the article reviewing ram for ivy bridge, the formula is: 2000*(cl/Mhz)=latencyin nanseconds. Why do you feel that is incorrect? (No disrespect intended, only trying to learn myself) Also regarding the difference in fsx, I was responding to the original post asking about 2400 vs 2600, not the post referring to 1333 vs 2600 (that post popped up while I was typing and I did not see it until after I posted). I do not believe anyone will get a 10-15% increase in fps going from 2400-2600. Than again if you were only getting 10 fps switching from 2400-2600 got you up to 11, that would be 10% so I guess it could be possible. Likely they would not even notice the change though. Regarding 1333, that should absolutly be upgraded.
  11. I had a 670 and now I have two 680's. No I do not think it is worth going to 680 over 670. Running 5760x1080 on Unigene Heaven set to extreme, my fps were 18 and my score was 460s. When I switched to the 680, it went to 19 fps and a 490 score. Not worth the extra $150. When I added the second card it went to 31 fps and a score of 790. I would go with two 670's.
  12. Thats pretty close to what I have. (Maximus Formula & h100i) I've been able to OC to 4.6 with no trouble. Asus has an auto tune feature that is supposed to auto OC to 4.6, but I found it wasn't stable during flights. I got better results on my own.
  13. There wont be any noticable benefit to fsx. That being said, faster ram does have it's benefits elsewere. I use it for video editing. You're better off though with 2400 over 2600. I am prone to error, but this is what I learned when trying to figure out how to compare ram... Take the CL/MHz*200. This allows you to truly compare different ram module speeds. For example, the lowest cas latency for a 2600 on newegg is 10. 10/2600*200=.769 at $165 for 8gb G.Skill Trident sells a 9CL 2400. 9/2400*200=.75 at $95 for 8gb The 2400 would be faster AND cheaper. Anyone can feel free to correct me if Im wrong. What Mobo are you going to be putting it in and what sort of cooling did you have in mind. These two things will play a bigger difference in a good oc than what batch you get.
  14. It's been about three months in the making but here is the final product... I'm getting really good picture quality over three monitors. If I were buying monitors again though I would pay the extra money for IPS panels and 1200 resolution. I use the iPad during flight to go between FS Kneeboard 2 and FS Widgets for real time flight tracking. I found adding the fan on the bottom of the case really helps keep gpu temps down. The stock 140 mm fan was moved to exhaust air out the front. The new 140 mm fan exhausts out the back. All other fans, including the 230 mm side fan not pictured, are drawing air in. The blue lights were the fans that came with my ram. I have no need for ram cooling so I mounted them on the back grill beside the gpu for more air. I'm not sure why g.skill would sell blue led fans with black and red ram modules. Tips and suggestions are welcome.
  15. You want the 3770"k" not the 3770. Even if you don't think you want to overclock now, don't rule out the option later. I highly recommend the h100i for a cooler. The difference between water and air is pronounced and the h100i is easy to install and low maint. I would recommend 1600 ram with cas no higher than 8. (Think g.skill) If you want to cut down on load times go with a ssd. If you don't want to spend the extra money for ssd, get a 10k rpm raptor drive. I don't know anything about that mobo, but I have had gigabyte in the past and was pleased. If I was buying a board today I would give a hard look at the asrock formula oc. I had a gigabyte gtx670 oc and LOVED it.
  16. Mesh resolution is set at 5m. This is about 3/4 towards max. Skimming through all my airport manuals orbx lists 5m as the required setting. So I'm not sure why that would be considered low. Please tell me if there is something I should know.
  17. I know what you're saying. I'm having great success though its not flawless. I just finished flying from firstair to Darrington in a carenado c-208. For some reason I drop down to about 15 fps until I get out of the firstair area. Halfway to Darrington I'm up to a steady 25+. Out of Siletz bay though I am nothing less than 60. I run my Rex clouds at 4096 and the other rex textures at 2048. I don't know how many people on here are running two gtx680 sli. If,anyone is I'd be interested to know if they are getting similar results. Also my CPU is oc at 4.6. I don't fly the pmdg. Mostly I fly carenado products. No light bloom or flair. Water is at high, not max. Mesh is at 5. Cloud draw,at 100 miles. Everything else is max except air and road traffic is around 16. Mostly I love not getting blank dash when I go back to the cockpit or artifacts when panning outside.

I just finished a new build and I am getting 60+ fps on three monitors with fsx running rex with 4096 hd clouds, orbx scenery and sliders near max or maxed, so as bad and outdated as fsx is, good performance can be had. This is just my two cents. Assuming you are going to pretty much stick with your current system, I would start with your CPU. If you are going with air, consider the NH-D14 if it will fit in your case. You're worried about damaging your CPU, keep it cool and you won't have to worry. I highly recommend the h100i water cooler. Very simple to install and the performance is excellent. I'm running ivy bridge with it which is much hotter than your CPU. I bet you get 4.8 easy with a good cooler. Also if you are worried about ruining your CPU, buy an insurance plan from intel. For $25 they will replace your CPU if it is damaged during overclocking. It's like square trade for CPU,s. After you find the limits of your CPU through oc, then oc your gpu. Neither of these is difficult. All you need to know is online. After your system is tuned to its max performance, THEN tweak fsx. I don't think it makes sense to try to make the software run better before the hardware. Your hardware is the physical limit of your fsx experience. Even if you tweak fsx to run at 100 fps it still won't do it if the hardware can't processes it. Finally, I got my big jump in performance when I went with sli. It works. At 5760x1080 I was getting 25-30 fps running fsx pretty near max but getting a lot of stuttering and visual artifacts. Now I get 60 and sometimes over 100 with a beautiful picture.
  19. Skip the nh-d14 and go with the corsair h100i. I had the noctua first. Temps were 10 degrees cooler on the h100i. The Ivy Bridge is hot. The h100i is just as easy to set up as an air cooler, takes up much less space and only costs about $20 more so why bother with air. P8z77 is a popular choice. I've read that the asrock formula oc overclockes ivy bridge real well. I've never used it but it might be worth a look. If you get the Samsung 840, make sure it is the PRO version. You won't get the same results from a straight version.
  20. I'm just finishing up building a new system primarily for fsx. I went through a lot of different pieces of hardware so I thought I would pass along what I learned, in case it could benefit any of you. This probably belongs in a readers product review forum but it looks like that one was closed. Also, I'm not a computer genius or fsx know it all. Anything I say is of course debatable and open to opinions, especially if you having useful advise to offer. Case: I started with the antec 900. I didn't like the airflow. I hated all the thumb screws. It didn't offer the option to install the psu fan down. It was to small to work in. When I later upgraded to water cooling, there was no room for the radiator for the h100i and when I switched to the gtx 680, I had to remove a drive bay for it to extend into. It also didnt have very well placed openings in the back wall for cable managment. If you're a build it and forget it person, it's probably fine, but I didn't care for it. So I got the coolmaster HAF 932 advanced. Tooless feature is great. Wish it was on both sides of the case though for a better hold. Plenty of room for radiator and gtx 680. Side mounted drive bays are awesome for cable management. Good air flow. My only gripe is it didn't come with grommets for the back wall. Mobo: I started with the asus z77 sabertooth. Love the thermal armor. Not sure it helps anything but looks good. I didn't have any noise issues with the 35mm fans like some reported. I upgraded the back fan to a 40mm noctua. Ultimately I had problems with the board though, rma for another one, had problems again and got a refund. I doubt there was anything wrong with the board in hind sight, but asus customer service was so awfull I gave up trying and got my money back. Then I got the asus Maximus V Formula. On the sabertooth I was able to oc to 4.5. On the formula I immediately was able to get 4.6. I have a hard time getting 4.7 on synthetic bench tests, but I don't seem to have any problems running fsx at 4.7. If I was looking for a mobo today, I would consider the asrock formula oc, but I'm pretty happy with the Maximus V for now. My CPU cooling started with the Noctua NH-D14. It just couldn't handle the heat from the 3370k. I had a hard time keeping the temps below 100 at 4.5 during benchmarks. So I switched the the corsair h100i. Now I can keep the temps in the 80s at 4.6, though I don't go above 70 with fsx. RAM I started with G.Skill Ripjaws 1866 9cl, 8gb. When the Trident series came out with a 9cl 2400 I switched to that. No benefits to fsx, but I do some video rendering occasionally and it's good for that. Plus it went with my black and red theme ;-) GPU: I started with the gigabyte gtx670 OC. Awesome card and oc to 1240. I was so impressed I switched to an Asus GTX680-DC2T expecting even better. Didn't turn out that way. Running Unigene Heaven at 5760x1080 on extreme settings, my fps was 18 and score was 470s with the 670. With the 680 I got upto 19 fps and a score of 490. Not worth the extra $150 for the 680, but I had it so I kept it. So I bought another 680 to try sli. I had heard so many conflicting stories about sli stating there was no benefit in fsx, others said fsx would run worse with sli, some said it improved during out of the cockpit views but did not improve views in the cockpit. Sli works with fsx by A LOT. Sorry if that statement makes some people think I'm going against proven research. (I don't believe in evolution either but some people tell me that's been proven too) This is what I found. With a single 680 running maxed sliders, mesh at 5, water at high 2x, no ground and plane shadows, no lense flair and bloom, but everything else maxed, I was getting 25-30 fps, sometimes in the 40s. With sli I am solidly in the 60s and over 100 at times. When I threw everything to max, I am still getting 30 fps. I no longer get blank dash when I go back into the cockpit, no gray prop circle outside the plane, I was getting horrible artifacts when panning around, now that's gone. I've only been playing with sli a couple days, but it can only get better as I learn to tweak it some more. There is a downside though. The gtx680 takes up three spaces and in sli they sit right on top of each other. With a single gpu you never hear the fans rev up, but with two... Temps rise dramatically, though probably not dangerously. So my advise would be to go with the 670. Nearly the same performance with much better are flow. Asus also has a 680 4gb model now that only takes up two slots, but I wouldn't spend the extra money for it. Something else Im finding out regarding saitek instrument panels. They don't seem to work on a 3.0 USB. I have eight panels and I started with two satechi USB hubs. Those are awful. Plug in more than six devices and the blue led starts getting dim from the power draw. If I had more than three instrument panels plugged into one hub, the panels would lock up, not power up, and whatever else. So I switched to Tripp lite hubs. The hubs themselves are fine, but if I plug into a 3.0 USB on my pc, the instrument panels lock up, the picture is washed out or they wont boot up. Plug the hub into a 2.0 slot, no more problems. I have a pic-e 3.0 USB with sata power coming too see if that improves anything. I picked up three asus vs248h-p monitors over blackfriday for $140 each. Can't beat the price, but my next monitors will be IPS and 1200 rather than 1080. Hope any of that might be useful to some.

  22. I have the haf 932 advanced and love it. Highly recommend it. If your worried about temps, go with the h100i. Short of a custom built cooler, that's as good as it gets. I have that too and am very happy running a 3770k at 4.7 for fsx. Fits nicely in the haf 932. I have it set up with four fans in a push pull. If I could have a do over with my motherboard I would get the asrock formula oc. I've read that it's a great overclocker.
  23. Here is what I did. I have one 240gb ssd for my OS. Another for fsx and all relate sim. Then a 300 gb hdd velosoraptor for programs and a 1T for files (family pictures, that kind of stuff) 240gb is plenty of space for the OS and a ssd speeds up boot times. 240gb is a lot of space for just fsx and add ons and a ssd cuts load times, but won't improve fps. All my other programs are loaded on the velosoraptor so as not to load down the ssd. Don't install the OS and fsx on the same drive though. You will get better performance separating them.
