You can change that. There's a line in the FSX.cfg which needs to be set to 0 instead of 1, I think it's called "PauseOnLostFocus". I'm not at my simming rig right now, so I can't check, but I'm sure someone else is gonna correct me if it's wrong.

Regarding your original question: I never fly that long routes, everything over 1 hour is actually too long for me, and in case I have that much spare time, I tend to fly more short hops, because approach and landing are the most thrilling part of any flight, and thus I try to get as much of that as possible.

You don't need to edit configs: it's simply an option in the FSX options menu (I think on the General page: Pause on task switch or something like that). If this option hadn't been there, FSX wouldn't be as popular as it is, I think. ^_^

 

And I also don't do long flights. An hour would be quite long already for me. I did some longer flights in the past (hour and a half) and I remember reading a book or something while still keeping an eye on FSX. I don't leave the cockpit when I fly... ^_^ I certainly would not go sleeping or working or shopping.

 

I do think a lot of people (those that also don't want to sleep or shop during a flight) go on the internet, as you apparently always wanted to do! Well, now you can too!

Never fly that long, but for shorter flights I read aircraft manuals when cruising.

As confirmed above by J Van E settings--> General --> Untick pause on task switch

 

1- i play my favorite music on you tube

2- i Surf the internet (firstly i check Avsim latest topics to stay updated on sim updates + older subjects which can benefit me in improving my FSX)

3- check some FSX you tube videos

4- I check my plane's engines/fuel/temperatures/any warning message...

5- I keep an eye on FS passengers/ Radar contact

6- I think of i deas of making videos

7- i keep my tv on.

 

But also i prefer short flights maximum 1 hour, in case its more i use the accelerator surely....

Like some other guys, most of my flights are anything from 1/2 an hour to 2 hours. Once the AP is set, I usually browse the web, look at YT or browse the Avsim or Orbx forum...

Very good question! When I fly long haul with MD11 I save the flight in mid air and then reload it, even for flight igger than 1,5 hrs. Most thrilling part, as said, is takeoff and landing, but especially for me the preflight cockpit preparation with FS2cew, a must have!

I've sone dome 4-5 hour flights. Always uncheck "pause on task switch" in the general options tab.

 

Then I just piddle around on the computer, visit some forums etc.

 

But in case ATC contacts me I have it so that I can see when an ATC message pops up.

I used to do 8 hour flights on autopilot, always in real time. I stayed at the computer, answered flight following transmissions, monitored my engines and looked at the scenery. I'd get up to take a potty break or refill my diet Coke, then curse when ATC handed me off to the next controller while I was gone and I missed it.

 

I finally decided that 8 hours was too long and started flying 4 hours or less most of the time. I still used autopilot a lot, but navigated VOR to VOR, and had to manually sequence the VORs as that's what the autopilot was following. Then I switched to heading and altitude hold on autopilot. Then I turned off heading hold. After a few 4 hour helicopter flights (with NO autopilot possible) I stopped using autopilot altogether in all aircraft.

 

I'm currently flying 1 to 3 hours using dead reckoning: compass heading and a stopwatch. If I use the GPS at all, it's to tell me how far and how long to my destination; I don't follow the magenta line.

 

What do I do on these flights? I fly the plane.

I don't know if all of you know this old trick for long flights. When ATC hands you to the next center, tune it but don't check in. That way FSX keeps updating the next centers that come up but doesn't cancel your IFR if you don't check in. You can go off and leave things for a bit and then come in later and check in with whatever center is up at that moment.

If I fly a route that is longer that an hour-hour and a half I tend to accelerate time up to 4x during cruise.

Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.

I look at charts or manuals. All of my flights are less than 2.5 hours from start to finish.

Well I did my first 4hr flight today :) from London to Moscow using Rex for real weather. Wow the turbulence was pretty spectacular. When about an hour from UUDD I got lighting and thunderstorms at FL370. So it was quite an induction into medium haul. The 737 was on autopilot and I was trying to do some work! I'm an a typical bloke who cannot multitask too well so keeping any eye on the plane and my laptop at the same time was well... Lets just say I'm now having a brandy to get over it all :)

Hi my long flights are international flights US to Europe. I fly the LDS 767 and fly the actual times they take off. I go with the Delta Airlines schedules. Since these flight leave the US at night I do my checklist and all my preflight stuff. Leave on time and using Radar Contact my first officer does all the radio contacting. Once on my way and on auto-pilot which is what the real crew is doing in the air. I go to bed I have my alarm clock set to wake me when I am suppose to enter European airspace. If I miss that point Radar Contact is set to stop the sim when I am 200-250 miles from my destination. Then I prepare for my approach and landing.

 

Thats on a east bound trip, when I am flying westbound from Europe to the US its in the day time. After getting to altitude and coasting out. I then do work around the house checking on things as I fly over the pond. Once I cross the ADIZ entering into Canada I then sit back down and monitor everything until landing.

 

Its just the reverse when I fly from the US to Asia, but the same routine.

 

One side note I flew to Dubai a couple of weeks ago to see how good the new scenery is and its fantastic. But along the way I also did some geography lessons on areas that I don't fly over that much. I also have high altitude charts for most areas where I fly. Asia has been a challenge however.

 

Having time is a plus when you retire from working everyday. LOL

If I am flying an hour or more I will use 4X Time Compression....

 

Reason Being? Because in the real world if I was flying a 737 for an hour or more I would have a co-pilot with me to keep me company and share duties. In FSX it is just me and that is not realistic and boring. Therefore I have no problem using the time compression.

 

Real world is different because you have a real person sitting next to you to share the time with.
