FS9 vs FSX ?

Featured Replies

Plain and simple if one wants to spend more time flying than tweaking and figuring out various issues that keep cropping up FS9 is the way to go. I'm amazed with the time FSX has been on the market all the performance issues I read about (for example, add-ons that work great in FS9 run like crap in FSX). FS9 with the right add-ons looks close to FSX so I ask myself why bother outside of the latest and greatest which I'd like to have. It's a shame FSX is where MS decided to kill the franchise. One more great version is all we needed, 'Flight' showed us that.

I want to migrate to FSX but the best computers out there still aren't enough for the sim and subtle problems still affect many users that shouldn't be a problem at this stage of the game. FS9.75 is stable and hassle free, plug & play, load & just fly which is what I'd rather do in a software package simulating flight. FSX looks good but as always looks aren't everything (something we said many years ago when FSX was first presented to us after finding out all our suggestions for the new sim were omitted).

FSX - Hassle Pron/great graphics

FS9 - Simplistic/ease of use for those that just want to fly.

The fact that the FSX fan-boys cannot keep out of the FS9 forums speaks volumes.

I would like to see the mods putting a ban on the likes of Mr Pinto etc from using the FS9 forums.

Where does that come from? The OP asked FS9 or FSX. I don't know who Mr Pinto is, but obviously people who have extensive experience with both simulations are naturally going to come in and give their opinion. Actually, I really don't like FSX all that much, but I made the determination that I would end up getting more out of FSX than I would have had I continued with FS2004. I don't like constantly having to make performance compromises or be on the endless tweaking treadmill, in fact it frustrates the heck out of me--but I had to weigh that against the fact that I'll be getting the latest PMDG, Flight Sim Laboratories, a2a, and Majestic aircraft that are coming along. FS9 people won't have that option. I had to make the decision about whether I was going to continue to spend money on a platform that was fading into the past, and was increasingly non supported by the top end developers, or whether I was going to spend it on the new things coming out for FSX. For what it's worth, I'm thinking that FSX itself is hopelessly outdated and I'll eagerly embrace something that comes along to replace it once and for all.

I respect people's decision to stick with FS9 for whatever reason they choose. I seriously doubt any of the FSX people are doing any missionary work here--I doubt any FSX person really cares which sim you choose, they were just weighing in on a question in a discussion forum.

This has been in discussion since FSX was released, and the answer lies in this.

-FSX has better graphics, but less performance

-FS9 has better performance, but less graphics

FS9 is 4 years older than FSX.

FSX is 4 years newer

FSX is the platform used by developers

FS9 is being phased out

Newer is a moot point when both sims are old and unsupported by Microsoft (both platforms are technically 'Phased' out, 'Flight' is the only one in).

I used to drink Pepsi. Now I drink Coke. :)

An even more useless argument is Ford vs Chevrolet, which from the viewpoint of a Mercedes driver is pretty much the height of silliness.

Mercedes being X-Plane 11 once it's released

I fly both sims. I have a pretty strong machine, but not a killer. Bojotes made a huge difference in FSX, at least for me.

Also most 3rd Party developers are making content primarily for FSX/P3D now, so keep that in mind.

A very good point - there are some add-ons out there which make my wallet twitch to get FSX just so I can fly them - e.g. all the FSX-native stuff by Rob Richardson or Tim Conrad

That is about the long and short of it for me. So we all must hope and pray that P3D will be going in the right direction

I do like FSX because at 1-3000 feet in a small airplane, like I do in real life, it looks much better than FS9 especially in ORBX country and I have good performance. IT is also very immersive with all the stuff going on on the ground with people walking around doing their stuff.

BUT I fly mostly on VATSIM in airliners or bigger props and at FL150 and above good looking ground textures is nice to have, but not important. Instead I appreciate a stable sim that I can thrust will still be running a few hours later when I land. And eg KORD from FSDT looks basically the same in FS9 as in FSX, but I have 40-50 higher FPS in FS9 and the smoothness that brings is very important to me. I do miss the so far greatest airplane add-on for MSFS, PMDG 737NGX, but I still have extra-ordinary planes like LevelD, PMDG MD11 and 747, Maddog, Aeroworx Kingair 200, DF727 and many more that are more than enough to keepnme busy and happy.

The iFly 737 for Fs9 may not be quite on par with the PMDG737NGX, but it's still extemely impressive. Then I have Activesky Enhanced, REX, GE Pro and others that pushes FS9 close to FSX. Not to mention SB4 that actually works in the sim...

Would I prefer to use FSX and throw out FS9? Probably, but it's just too much fuzz to get it working and It's just a reboot away from behaving nicely to getting gremlings into the sim. I have lots of add-ons for both sims so that is not the issue. And I ALWAYS fly in VC with FS9 :) I simply rather sit in a 3 hour session with the iFly 737 with slightly less systems depth but with high fps, than in the superior PMDG 737NGX in a sim with 15-16 fps that can stop working anytime.

And I DON'T have an old computer. It's not superquick but still an i7 2500K@4,5 GHz, 6 GB RAM and a Asus 660 Ti videocard running Win 7 64 with only flighsim stuff installed. I am actually fed up with FSX fan boys saying FS9 is just for simmers with old hardware who flies in 2d cockpit only!!!

The checklist for what makes the best Flight Sim comes down to this:

The best PC flight simulator should deliver a level of unbelievable realism for YOU.

You know you've found the best flight simulator when not only are the graphics and game play are incredible, but when you find yourself flying for hours and hours on-end because the sim does such a brilliant job of making you experience what it's actually like to be a pilot.

Enjoy your "realism", I've found mine:

Hours and hours of flying without having to worry about CTD, OOM, or how much memory a particular scenery uses. Having everything maxed, 100% AI, and throwing anything at my sim with NO FPS issues makes for a very fluid experience for me.

This post perfectly outlines where things are at these days. I hope P3D, XPlane 11 or 12 moves us all to one great sim because what we have today is a bit long in the tooth. We should all be on one sim now and there's very legitimate reasons why we are not. I'm rooting for XPlane because after what MS pulled and continues to pull with Windows 8 and their Apple 'like' store I'd like the option to run my sim in Linux with the latest hardware and all that brings and not be bothered with MS's chain yanking. The PC can be dead for many but with Linux and a product like XPlane simulation is more in the hands of the hobbiest and not the gaming market who has dumbed down so much over the years it's pathetic. I just hope XPlane is fully realized one day after all these years of less than stellar versions.

FS9 and Xplane 10 give me this feeling :good: FSX gives me a different feeling  :P I fly FSX to get my white powder fix :O ..............Snow

?? PMDG has released numerous add-ons for FS9... Drastically reduce the detail of the plane? I think I need to send you a screenshot of the PMDG 737 running on FS9. Besides, what do you care about the detail of the plane when you are sitting in the cockpit for the whole flight? It's the cockpit and the flight modelling that matters if you buy such add-on.

I meant that PMDG should never release anything for FS9 now. And yes, it would drastically reduce the detail of the plane because when I say detail, I mean the flight modeling as well.

If PMDG would have released an 'fs9' version of the NGX, the NGX wouldn't of come CLOSE to how detailed everything is. IT would have ruined the plane.

Face it, FS9 is dying because it's outdated. Sorry, but it's the truth.

The AirSummer  A320 had awesome textures just for FS9, did you ever try it?

Here we go again. How many of these types of threads have we had over the years now? If its not FS9 v FSX its X-plane v FSX or MS Flight or etc.......

A picture is worth a thousand words:

gallery_158959_9_62861.jpg

Don't argue folks. Instead go fly in whatever makes you happy! Its what I did.

FS9, FSX, X-plane - all great and realistic sims in the end, each one has its charm and advantages.

I meant that PMDG should never release anything for FS9 now. ...................

Don't worry AirSummer !

As far as I know PMDG won't be doing any FS9 stuff. But hey, who knows they may change their mind like Cerenado did

anything is possible! innocent0002.gif

Just like these sarcastic, elitist, condescending comments from certain FSXers toward those who still use and enjoy FS9.

Will someone please lock this pointless thread. This horse has been beaten to death for the 5,000th time.

As much as I'd like to, we can't go around closing threads without a really viable reason. Its too dictatorial

These types of threads will keep pooping up, its human nature I guess.................

and even here in these types of topics some people raise good points............ and others not so......

as long as it remains civil, we'll leave it open.

These types of threads will keep pooping up

What a great typo!

So let's make something useful of this poopy thread...

For some reason I missed the releases of the Air Simmer Airbus; I went to the website and noticed talk of an A319.

I'd love to have a good one of these in the hangar, anyone have experience of the model (and especially of the sales/support side)?
