This is a copy of the letter that I sent to the Virginia Senate/Representatives:

Dear Representative/Senator:

You do not know me personally. I am an honorable veteran (US Navy 2003-2007). I am a registered voter. I may or may not have voted for you in the last election, but I do vote every election. For the most part, I am not involved in politics or the day to day laws that are brought before you for review. I am not here to do your job. I am simply requesting that you take the time to hear me out. I will let you know that I swore the same oath as you - “I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. I believe that the Constitution of the United States is not a document, but is the very foundation that our country was built on. Any modification against the Constitution is a direct attack against our country.

The Second Amendment to the US Constitution states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The definition of INFRINGE is: to encroach upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another.

I am not defending random acts of violence that have been in the news. There are people that simply do not care for the rights and liberties of others. My concern is when we as a country take the step in changing the Constitution that affects law abiding citizens and attacking their rights and liberties as such. These rights and liberties that I have sworn to protect with my life. These rights and liberties that many service members have died to protect. These rights and liberties that you have sworn to protect.

Please choose carefully when voting on making regulation changes involving gun control whether it is on which guns or on the size of magazines allowed for ownership or purchase. Criminals will never follow laws; please do not turn citizens into criminals.

Sincerely,

James R. Lee

Thanx for sharing James . I share your sentiment completely.. Really sick and tired of bloviating politicians full of hot air posing and posturing.

I'm not even from America, but that is a strong, heartfelt letter.

The US Constitution is an important part of America and what you wrote is a very educated and well worded piece.

If they take your guns, other rights will follow - It's happened in history before..

The 2nd Amendment was drafted over 200 years ago. Times change, this is no longer the wild west but a civilized country. It is time to bring the laws up to date with current reality and the wishes of the majority of the electorate. There is no practical reason for owning an assault rifle and large ammo clips. To say that other rights may follow is true--but only if the majority decide that is the way to go. This is a democracy, and the majority of the population supports some measure of gun control.

Surely if something goes against your constitution you have to put it to referendum? Times change and if the majority wish for it to be so, then a constitution changes if it needs to be changed. If it doesn't need to be changed then there's no issue with your rights. They can't introduce an unconstitutional law without consent of the people.

the second amendment should allow me to own shoulder fired anti aircraft missile launchers......but I digress

Mr. Fatback the tone of your post has me fuming but I will bite my tongue at your obvious troll post.

suffice it to say that people with attitudes like yours are the reason I recently joined the NRA .

I certainly don't think Fat back is trolling, he raised a point that things change with time, a good point. People are allowed a contrary view without being trolls.

There is also no practical reason for owning a car with 600HP and can do 200MPH when the fastest you can legally go on some roads is 80mph. More people die on car accidents in a year, by far, than people killed by assault rifles. Are we going to also restrict owning high poweres vehicles? Because after all, like you said, times have changed and we no longer move around by horse and carriages.

You'd better hope that gun control opponents can come with better logic than that or gun control is a done deal.

Letters like that have more impact if they don't start out, "Dear Sir or Madam as the case may be." Also, if you're gonna take the time to write it, write it on paper and send it in an envelope.

Sorry, but there is nothing wrong with the tone of Fatback's post and he isn't trolling either. He just happens to have a different opinion than yours on the subject.

When gun laws or lack thereof other than just bearing arms, are put ahead of the safety of children, something has to be done.

Assault weapons are an offensive weapon. Im sure the constitution as was written umteen years ago didnt intent people to own mass assault weapons which were soley designed to kill and maim in the greatest and fastest way possible. There is nothing about it thats says defend.

If my kid cant go to school or a movie theater without the fear of wondering if he will be shot, wait not just shot, riddled with bullet holes from an assault rifle, then there should be change. Surely childrens and everyones life is more important that owning a weapon that aims to kill as many as possible.

Assault rifles and large ammo clips didn't exist and weren't even contemplated when the 2nd Amendment was drafted. So it certainly wasn't drafted with the objective of protecting the rights of citizens to own them. The right to bear arms was a concept of its time and was drafted with the weapons of that time in mind.

Edit: And no, this is not a troll post. I tried to put forward a logical argument. This is a topic that raises emotions and I wouldn't be surprised if my "troll post" looks pretty tame by the time this thread gets much further.

I will second Rónán O Cadhain's remarks / post, and say that if I want to own an AR-15, M27-IAR, M-60E, M-249, AK-47, and M16-A3 then by god I have the right to own those guns and the government should K.M.A. about owning them. Yes, they may inquire as to the "WHY" do I want to own such rifles, but my reply to them would be, the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution allows me to own and bear (carry) firearms, and NOTHING can infringe upon that (including other laws - which they do.... you must have a concealed weapons license is an infringement to the 2nd Amendment). Now some will say, NO that is a stipulation. Well guess what, a stipulation IS an infringement, you are keeping me from doing what I want, how I want, when I want.

To the OP, I congratulate you sir on a well written letter. Would you mind if I borrowed / copied your letter omitting the service parts being I was never in the military, but I do support the military and their families. The soldiers are not really the ones who sacrifice when they go to war, it is their families who say goodbye to their DADS, MOMS, Brothers and Sisters. THANK YOU SIR FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!!!!
