Fed up with OOMs!

That is great news for everyone. When should we expect a fix?

When should we expect a fix?

You design it, I'll code it. Good luck mapping more than 32 bits of address space into a 32 bit address.

To reduce the problem to easily understandable terms, if you have a single bit, value zero or one, you cannot map 256 values into it. You could double the available address space by adding a single bit to the address, but the address registers only have 32 bits.

If it were possible, it would have already been done.

I think my brain is out of memory after reading this later part of the thread. Where's a flock of geese when you need one.

There should of been more Geese but I got a OOG error

Ahhh,I see. Shucks huh?

Shucks huh?

I only wish it were possible. I looked into various ways of accomplishing it, but it all boiled down to that one gotcha.

Whoops I guess your right!

Sorry guys!

Having brought another SSD drive instead if reloading FSX I took the dreaded short cut (I know I know but i was impatient) and just copied FSX to the new drive and linked it from c to f all worked perfectly until a recent windows update mysteriously removed the link and therefore made FSX inoperative. Yet another reload *sigh* and time to buy yet more 'stuff' to Erm... Improve the FSX experience. Hey, I admitted it I'm an addict ok!

So in addition to UTX, GSX ExperienceX and UK2000 airports I loaded FSGenisis and FSAltutude and expected to fly the NGX with moderately hight settings? Well yeah! After all, although I'd experienced the odd OOM after switching to default LOD and lower resolution clouds it worked brilliantly. Now with the new goodies surprise surprise constant OOM's

This is how it happens you get lulled into a false sense of security and those settings slooowly over time creep up and new things get installed.

It's so annoying cause when it works it looks amazing but in reality I've smacked headlong into the wall and their is no other way to go except backwards. This is not a natural direction to aim for but is why cars have a reverse gear and FSX has sliders which not only move to the right but amazingly go left too :)

Now the dilemma, what has to give? This choice will be different for everyone who has pushed the limits of FSX but like the deck of cards the higher you go...

Maybe this is an opportunity for developers of some add-on's to optimise their offerings but in the end we can't expect to keep on adding stuff to this old technology without consequences.

Well I feel your pain...

I actually had one tonight when it mattered. Flying online with Pilot Edge... did a nice flight from BFL to SNA (or tried to)... I forgot I had lod 6.5 and had been flying for a few hours all over socal this afternoon. I never quit FSX before I loaded the NGX. Anyway, flew that route, over LAX area... with NGX and LOD 6.5 and tons of weather... lol

OOM right when I was getting into the approach GRRRR!!!

I have a mental block when it comes to moving sliders to the left. NASCAR drivers should feel right at home though :Big Grin:

UK2000 Beta Tester

It's a little technical.

Ever done any beta testing? You not only have to find out what causes a problem, but what doesn't cause it. In this case, it's easy to assume that OOMs are caused by overloading a system with goodies, but the fact that NOT overloading the system does not get the same OOMs is a useful statistic... at least to developers. As someone who has done both development and beta testing, I report what I'd find useful as a developer.

To add a bit...

Several people said that scenery/autogen couldn't be run at max without causing OOMs.

I'm running max autogen but no scenery, and getting no OOMs even with complex aircraft. TheFamilyMan is running lots of scenery but simpler 3PD aircraft and no add-on airports and getting no OOMs. A few people might find this information useful.

I don't know who said that... but I disagree. I do agree it's difficult to run max scenery PLUS complex addons and not get OOM's. You can run max AG/scenery all day without big payware planes or scenery and be fine.

Yeah maybe certain 3PD's should ###### up their ears and take note. Oops was I talking out loud?

Edit: Apologies I typed a word that meant like when a dog lifts up its ears to full alert so wasn't typing profanities!

Every day is different.

I was running happily until I got the recent Carenado SR22. It is my current spike/OOM king. After hours of trying various things, turned out Autogen needs to be at normal for this bird.

OTOH the OOMs I was getting sometimes with 737NGX was cured by doing a Repair install. Huh.

And then I decided to set up KLAX to KMHV IFR with realtime weather updates, and spike city! Lots of clouds and mountains.

Then I remembered setting my Nvidia to render 1 rather than 3 frames ahead might keep it from gorging its little buffer, and voila! Spikes Be Gone!

You're always one mysterious tweak away from perfection, for one combination of goals, with FSX.

But what I like is that you CAN customize it in such detail. It's like trimming your controls during flight, finesse and attention to detail are required.
