This is what our flight sims could look like

I was thinking just the same thing! Just for testing their latest beta of course, not at all for enjoyment..

Nope, nope. Not at all!!

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Here are the results I obtained using a EVGA GTX690 dual-gpu card on i7 2600k running 4.7ghz 16GB ram:

Anti-Aliasing set at 4x for the benchmark. Unigine's game engine technology is used in several video games at present. I think it would be insane if a flight/rail/boat sim could be built on this - but the scope of rendering the entire planet in photo-realistic scenery - that would be something in the 'highly unlikely' realm. File sizes alone would probably be prohibitive... that said, it would be LIGHTS OUT better than Microsoft Flight, eh? Picture this as a VFR flight in MS Flight... a bit better scenery?

Note to self: FINALLY something I can use my GTX690 on! Thank you Howard, for posting.

Your results are interesting. I did a side by side comparison of my video card (GTX650) and yours on a benchmarking site, and the benchmark gave your card a 4 to 1 edge over mine. The Valley demo results you display are also exactly at that 4 to 1 edge. It means these benchmarks are very useful and accurate in predicting the performance of our 3D cards.

I played the Valley demo tonight after a couple of days away from it, and got totally immersed in the forest environment for a good twenty minutes while I wandered around. It's very relaxing after a commute today that brought me through rain, sleet and wind (I have a hundred mile roundtrip commute to my office). For those who didn't hear in the news, we had snow around Phoenix today! Our desert Oasis is ringed with white capped mountains.

Well thanks for that John. I finally found something that runs BOTH of the KEPPLERS on the 690 at the same time. It's killing me that neither FSX -nor- XP takes max advantage of the GPU's built-in SLI capability, all on ONE card.

Sigh. I know about EVERY OTHER GAME in the WORLD would benefit me for having this card, but XP would be happier if I had a GTX680 with --4-- GB of VRAM on the GPU card instead of 'only' 2 GB! Sigh.

Still and all, I love X-Plane. Thank you for sharing the stats with me.

Ha Devon, nope, I never knew about that meme.

All I know is...I want moar!!!

And a memey night to you too, sir! http://izismile.com/...es_47_pics.html

I note the War Thunder forums have outgrown their server and are moving. And they are sponsoring an international tournament. A good sign for them, they must be excited! And its nice to see any flight sim anywhere doing so well.

It's a different age for retail then when MS developed flight simulation, with download distribution the world can be your market. It's why you can have all these indi niche games that make money. Look at Kerbal Space programme for example.

It seems like only yesterday I became completely addicted to Duke Nukem 3D... it was an amazing experience, as was tennis, ping pong and space invaders!

I don't think it has as much to do with "FSX-box" thinking as it does broad appeal. Some people (and I'm one of them  ) want to fly where they want to fly, in my case the western US and Canada. Others want fly in Europe, or Australia or.. While I would certainly TRY a good looking sim platform initially limited to a different area if it offered sufficient interest, I can't imagine committing to it if it didn't offer the areas I want, or at least a planned enhancement to allow it..

Remember, there are a lot of different reasons we sim, and for many of us location is critical.

I understand the desire for an entire globe but imho this will not happen. Not for years and years to come. Maybe decades. If a lot of people will only support a new flightsim with the entire world in it, there never will be a new flightsim. If everyone would support a flightsim with a nice large region in it, we might see it happen one fine day. Of course I am talking about a flightsim with great 'next gen' graphics! Of course I would also like the entire world in my next flightsim but I rather have a small region in a new flightsim then no new flightsim at all.

That was a classic. I still remember finding those "secret" levels lol

here's a thread on the avalanche 2.0 engine as used in the game 'the hunter'. Very nice graphics. the hunter has a free version which is limited to only scenery area but the player can walk for miles among the realistic scenery. Guns can be left out and only the camera taken along with the GPS device for orientation. The linked thread has several stills showing how the scenery appears in avalanche 2. Pretty impressive when walking through it, quite convincing compared to a real nature hike in the Sierra Nevadas. Avalanche 2.0 is not the latest version, but a earlier version 'the hunter' uses.

Never or a very long time is too strong, that would imply there are no databases with global geographical and man made structure information out there when of course you have Google Maps / Open Street Map and so on.

Classic? That was just a Wolfestein3D rip off :)

It will happen. When amazing stuff like Euro Truck Simulator and Rise of Flight can be made, why not a new civilian flight sim? Not all great things need to be made by large corporations. I'm sure a small developer will surface with something.

When amazing stuff like Euro Truck Simulator

Hm, ETS only loads the same stuff over and over again in small parts... I wouldn't be too impressed if a flightsim was made with that kind of quality. It's certainly not amazing imho. It's nice for a trucking game but nothing too spectacular.

Interesting! I'm going to give it a try.
