April 5, 201313 yr First, if interested in a good registry cleaner, try CCleaner, by Piriform. It's free and works very well. It also cleans up your spyware. Secondly, I want to download some add-ons for FSX, and I'm told they need the Acceleration Pack to work. I never installed it but I do have SP1 & 2 applied - will this suffice? I hate to spend money on the Acceleration if I don't need it - I have all of the A/C and "adventures" I need. -= Gary Barth =-
April 5, 201313 yr Moderator Biggest tip I can give anyone doing reinstall is this GET A GOOD Image backup Program. I use O&O diskimage. I can recommend AOMEI Backupper. It's free for personal use. As well as drive backup it can also do full, differential and incremental. It can also clone discs. http://www.aomeitech.com/aomei-data-backuper.html Ray (Cheshire, England). April 6, 201313 yr Reinstall of Windows and FSX I ran into the issue wall of Windows disallowing me the ability to take command of the readonly attributes of my shaders10 files, so therefore could not complete my conversion to DX10. Now before you guys jump down my throat about taking ownership and attributes and all that, I have to tell you that I know, and did everything that is do-able by the book but nothing could make it happen. Steve, of DX10 fame, advised (not to me personally) on the DX10 thread that the only solution to him appeared to be a fresh windows install. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/387367-dx10-fix-fails-to-install/?p=2595829 http://forum.avsim.net/topic/387367-dx10-fix-fails-to-install/ Anyway, I previously had my Windows 7-64 on a 120 SSD and FSX on the other 120g. Instead of repeating that installation system I have now installed Windows 7-64 on the two 120g SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. For FSX I have ordered a new 240g REVO drive (should be here by Monday) that is even faster at an SSR of up to 740MB/s and SSW up to 720MB/s than the SSDs in RAID 0. All my storage is kept separately in two large mechanical drives. Kind regards,
April 6, 201313 yr If you ever plan, or there is a possibility that you will want to fly shared cockpit then save yourself having to reinstall again by installing FSX Deluxe rather then Acceleration. About 70% of the time Acceleration doesn't perform a good install of Simconnect leading to problems with Shared Cockpit, ActiveSky, and other addons. You'll hear people say this isn't true, but they're either in the 30% (not good odds) or they aren't noticing the problems because of what they have installed or HOW it is setup. 700 hours of grooming countless systems and seeing problems with Acceleration time after time after time, and I just won't debate this anymore. Anyway, just thought I'd help prevent another reinstall - it's painful, especially if you have a number of addons. Dave Hello Dave, Thanks for the warning, but I have a question. Which edition(s) combinations produces the Simconnect problems, since it may be a difference between terminology understanding (on my part)? The problem combination is which one(s) of the following: 1. The original FSX Standard Edition that required both sp1 and sp2? 2. The original FSX Standard Edition plus the separate Acceleration program which includes sp1 and sp2)? 3. The original FSX Deluxe Edition that required both sp1 and sp2? 4. The original FSX Deluxe plus the separate FSX Acceleration program which includes sp1 and sp2? 5. The FSX Gold addition that includes sp1, sp2 and Acceleration in one program? Thank you kindly,
April 6, 201313 yr Commercial Member Stephen, Actually, I can't select numbers you provided, but allow me to explain. FSX Gold contains three disks. If you install the first two disks, you will install DSX Deluxe, then you will have to install Service Pack 1 and 2 (SP1 and SP2) manually. Note please that after installing FSX Deluxe and before installing SP1, you must restart your computer, then start FSX, jump into the cockpit it in any aircraft, exit the flight, and then close FSX. This allows all of the files to load and setup entries. Not doing this is one of the reasons people have issues later on. Next install SP1, Reboot, and then install SP2. Starting FSX is not necessary in between SP1 and SP2, though it couldn't hurt. If you elect to install Accleration, and I plead with you NOT to do so, then you don't have to install SP1 or SP2, and doing so will likely cause unwanted problems. These are different problems than what an Acceleration install often creates. FSX Standard and Deluxe do not have the problems that FSX Acceleration has. For the most part, the FSX WIKI is accurate for the most part, but even there they illude to FSX Gold being a version. Again, it is not a version of FSX, but rather a package of existing software (Deluxe and Acceleration). FSX Standard and Deluxe should both be updated with SP1 and SP2. The only exception to this is if the user wishes to run some very specific, very older software addons which were released in 2007 and maybe 2008. If the user is running software released after 2009 then they should first update their FSX Standard or Deluxe versions to SP1 and SP2. FSX Acceleration was already updated with the files for SP1 and SP2, but again the Simconnect installation goes haywire and either has corrupt files or incorrectly written files which cause problems with some higher end addons and shared cockpit. The FSX WIKI is located: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Flight_Simulator_X I hope this answers your questions! Feel free to ask me anything else. April 6, 201313 yr Ok , I've never heard that its best to not install acceleration before . I've always put acceleration on. Mmm. Nor have I. Nor, I suggest, have the rest of us who are using Acceleration with no problems - not even with SimConnect. Gerry Howard
April 6, 201313 yr I have recently tested acceleration pack. Becouse of hardware changes, i reinstaled windows 7 and fsx, and this time i decided to test Acceleration pack. When i purchased fsx for the first time, i received advice not to use acceleration becouse is not performing so well like SP2 and it's buggy. I did so. Two days ago, after reinstaling everything, i decided to give it a try.I didn't managed to get it stable. I have seen increased fps fluctuation, lot of stutters, and very bad overall performance. I tested it with many payware aeroports and scenery, with and without AS2012 to exclude simconnect problems. I checked twice all system, windows, applied again fsx.cfg and nvidia inspector settings, and nothing changes. After that i uninstalled acceleration from fsx DVD menu and used "repair" function, instaled again SDK from DVD. Instaled SP1 and SP2 for fsx, and SDK sp1a and SP2. And applied again my UTX, GEX and REX textures. This way i keeped all addons and their functionality, nothing was broken. But difference in performance was huge! In places where i could not fly becouse of low fps and stutters, now i have stable 30fps(locked) and everything is smooth. And the only thing i did was to replace Acceleration pack with SP2. My conclusion about acceleration is so obvious.I don't know the reason, but i did some quick research and differences between Acceleration and SP2 are more than a couple of missions and planes. I think It's more than simconnect problems. For example, the atmosphere is different, and some addon planes performs very different. The autogen is different too. I think that acceleration is made for users who want to fly missions in default planes, and there is nothing else better in this package. And SP2 was released after acceleration, maybe some things are fixed? This is just just what I was thinking in the meantime, does not mean that is true ^_^Another thing, i think that anyone who flies GA planes will not necessarily get bad performance, i use only Maddog, PMDG NGX and MD11. And tones of scenery addons - FSDT, Fly Tampa, ORBX, Aerosoft etcI don't want to start a debate and argue about this, but let's say that in my conclusion - acceleration pack can perform very bad and can cause a lot of problems and bad performance on some systems/in some cases. From now I'm going to recommend all acceleration users who have the problems with simconnect, performance etc, to try my simple, fast and safe metod to replace Acceleration with SP2 and see how is. It can't hurt, and can be reverted back to Acceleration at any time, using the same metod Zeljko Budovic
April 6, 201313 yr acceleration pack can perform very bad and can cause a lot of problems and bad performance on some systems/in some cases. Never seen a difference between SP2 and Accel and your the first I have seen make this statement!
April 6, 201313 yr Never seen a difference between SP2 and Accel and your the first I have seen make this statement! No, i'm not first. For example see @@DaveCT2003 above my first post in this thread. I instaled and tuned fsx on many systems, and tested aceleration on my PC two days ago before i came to this conclusion Zeljko Budovic

April 6, 201313 yr That's two posts in the current thread 5 years after Acceleration was released. Where are all the others? Like i said, I'm not going to argue about this. This was my experience, if you have issues with acceleration - my advice is too try SP2 and you are wellcome to PM me for detailed instructions. If you are happy with acceleration, good for you Zeljko Budovic
April 6, 201313 yr Interesting, as i've have FAR LESS problems after converting from being an SP1&2 user, to Acceleration.
