Lion Air's B737-900ER overshot the runway and ended floating in the sea

Featured Replies

It just happened less than an hour ago, no casualties has been reported, it seems all on board survived. It took off from Bandung an ended in the sea after the planes unsuccessfully stopped properly. Could it be aquaplaning?

How is that possible with a runway that long...

And to think that in the latest issue of Airliner World, they were gushing what a brill Indonesian airline they were. What a loss of an aircraft.

Rick Almeida

Dodgy airline. Shame as the aircraft was just 2 months old.

That was me. Pilots were disabled and as luck would have it I was the only PMDG rated   passenger on the flight

there has been some confusions as the pax reported there were no signs of contact made by the landing gears and runway surface. it also reported that it ditched 50 m before runway 9.. why ditching when it was so close to the runway?

i think it is an undershoot. from this flightradar24 playback we can see the aircraft is approaching runway 09: http://www.flightradar24.com/2013-04-13/06:50/12x/LNI904/1227ee4

If we compare the photos from the accident and images from google maps looks like the aircraft is resting short of runway 09:

Something interesting i noticed from the pictures, the horizontal is missing...

you're right. it was undershoot 10 meters before reaching the runway. Does severe headwind make sense?

from the metars looks like the winds were light but i've heard another pilot that landed before the accident happened reported windshear on final. it's a little early to determine what caused the crash, there are usually much speculations and assumptions by the media after every crash, but we have to wait for the investigation to shed some light. good to hear everybody survived.

More like dodgy pilot with dodgy pilot license. Aircraft is 737-800.

I think it's pretty clear the whole airline is kind of messed up, there's a reason why they are still on EU black list together with most other domestic Indonesian airlines...

If you look at the wiki page about Lion Air you can see that between 14th of January 2002 and this day they have managed to wreck total 7 aircraft, most of those accidents being runway overruns (although only one of them was fatal).

No wonder why they have to order so many planes if they have regular rate of 7 hull losses for every 10 years or so.

From the story, it says the plane was on a normal approach, then it fell out of the sky. Sounds like a stall too me

Every media report of a plane crash/incident uses the term 'Fell out of the sky' closely followed by 'Aircraft narrowly misses children's orphanage'....

I would take eye witness reports with a pinch of salt.
