AVSIM demographics

Featured Replies

Still I think that many agree if this survey was done at XP forums the XP to FSX ratio would be opposite of what it is here.

I'm a speed reader, and see many forums, and especially the traffic at those particular forums. Just look at X-plane org. or Xavation general discussion forum traffic, versus the FSX forums here at AVSIM. The X-plane count is low in comparison. A poll at a dedicated website wouldn't have near the realistic numbers that I see by reading different websites.

The same survey over at the org might paint a different picture.

Might?  Y'think?

I assume over at "the org", they would've put a link to their survey in their FSX, P3D, DCS... forums as well, right?

What?  They don't, what...?  Oh.

Good grief, it's an Avsim demographics survey.  Of COURSE it reflects Avsim's user base.  That's kinda the point.

FSX is my primary platform right now, but I'm first and foremost interested in flight simulation, so I still follow and maintain interests in XP, P3D and other sims as well as news of the general sim community.  Tom is spot on - there's good platform agnostic stuff (and general community info) you're missing if you only come to Avsim for the XP forums.

That's odd, isn't that exactly what I said?

Ah.......no.

Avsims actual user base, is more diversified than the org. There are far more daily topics and discussions on a daily bases at Avsim, than the org. I'm sure that if this survey was presented at the org, that the ratio would increase . But I do believe that overall, the numbers of actual aim use, would be close to this survey. In other words, almost everyone has not yet switched to x-plane.

No, not really.

The point I was trying to make, was it has appeared in this forum over the last year, that many AVSIM users, has either moved to X-Plane 10, or are using it along with FS2004 and/or FSX. I was just surprised the numbers in the survey doesn't show a significant jump from last year as a result.

Thanks

Tom

Prove it!

Michel,

Huh? Prove what?

In fairness, I've probably aggregated what you said with one or two others in responding, but if you're in agreement with what I wrote what, exactly, was the point you were originally trying to make?

Mine is simple. "The org" is a special interest site, dedicated to one platform. To state the results would be different there is obvious. This site is not dedicated to one platform. Even though its audience certainly may not perfectly represent the sim community, it's certainly more a cross-section than "the org" is.

Do you disagree?

Scott

Scott,

No, I don't disagree with you, I was trying to make the point the outcome of this specific question was known in advance. There is no surprise. Having said that, I believe Avsim does not represent (in numbers) the X-Plane community as a whole but rather those of us who prefer to remain members here and choose a different platform than the norm. The survey is valid for their needs, for their website's needs.

There is no fundamental argument here, the numbers are valid for their intended use. Sorry for keeping everyone up so late...

X-Plane is the future and FSX users will move over to X-plane slowly over the long haul as technical limitations from 32bit show up more and more.  Still, long as Obrx is putting lipstick on the pig with its better autogen and wrapping paper ground textures fsx will be used a quite bit longer.  Even if, FSX is made with 1990s era coding people will still use it as there landmarks, a higher selection of planes and good payware that X-planes does not have at the moment.   Still, think X-plane is the long term sim overall just take till 2018 and beyond.  The move to 64bit may not be big on the surface, but what is does is provide more plane buzzing around better aircraft and weather modeling, and allow more scenery to be displayed.  Gonna take 5 to 7 years be before will see sizable percentage move beyond fsx to X-plane or flight gear.  Likely, fsx has 10 times more users than X-plane, but if X-plane was smart it would design the sim to get the younger generation to get into it. Think as FSX will look old to the younger kids wanting to fly the will move right over to X-plane , while you old foggies OC and tweak your machine to get FSX to purr.

Carenado had an interesting and I believe accurate take on all this at another site. Me- I' ve never been one sim loyalty-what is the point of that-I'll selfishly take the best at any given time that creates best the rw experience- as consumers why would one take any other tact?

Biggest limitation for for 64 bit is lack of real working gps that currently works in only 32 bit. For rw training, and flight schools that rely on such this coud be a greater barrier than the benifits of 64 bit-for many it is about rw application.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Just taken the survey & was surprised that I couldn't nominate DCS as a simulator.

I still spend the majority of my time in FSX, however a growing proportion is now spent in the DCS P51D due to it's level of accuracy, & to having an FDE that was created outside of the limitations of FSX. This balance is only going to grow as more aircraft & sceneries are made available for the base platform.

long as Obrx is putting lipstick on the pig

Hehe - We have pic of the day, this is my nomination for quote of the day.

Still, long as Obrx is putting lipstick on the pig

Hahaha...now that's funny!

Okay, got it. So have them do a survey.

What needs to be done (if someone actually cares), is make a single survey, like hosted by google or something, and post links to said survey at all the flight sim sites...    of course there'd be some doubling up but you could average out the results and that would tell us a better estimate of how many XP users there are on forums etc...
