Wow, this actually worked for me.

Almost no shimmer or blury distant textures now.

Thanks,

Please do something for shimmering for us ATI users until Steve's fix get out. We haven't inspector but we have RadeonPro.

@Paul, in the How-to it says this:

---

Blue squares:
While fixed with Patch 3.2.1, there are still occasional black squares popping up, particularly over water,
and Simon (Avsim member flying_w) noticed a line in the cfg left over from DX9 was
SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=2, so he removed it, and in doing so found another fix.
---

its a left over from DX9 and you should remove it?

I still don't fully understand what the SWT entry does. Phil doesn't really explain what it does and what the effects are by lowering it or making it higher. He does say default value is 30. That makes your advice harder to understand when you say with the modern GPU's of this we can maybe get it up to 3 or 4, if the default value is much higher than that, if it is indeed 30.

Edit: Tested it briefly at KLAX in Mega Scenery SoCal and it looked like it helped with loading textures.
Without the entry I noticed an AI plane with black wings (until I got closer to it) and with the entry (SWT=2) I didn't see that happening at all.

Good questions, Mark, and it's leading into another series of testing, as I went to the 780 recently. I read Phil's notes and they make sense - except that, as I previously noted - neither the 2009 hardware - nor the driver/Inspector technologies are what we're playing with, and 30 is wrong for us. I've modified that comment in the How-To to reflect what I found over the last few days, and intend doing more today, as there's a link between this, BP, FTFF, Water and TBM.

More later! Fun! Wow!

FUN FUN FUN!!! Haha, it seems like you are have a blast with the endless testing ^_^

Thanks for the clarification, i'm going to fly with this entry some more and will report back my results here.

Hi Paul,

Glad to hear of your 780--I've got a 670 right now which is working pretty well along with an OC i2600k at 4.5. Did you notice a significant jump in performance with the 780? I think it's a bit pricey for me right now but...you know Christmas and other occasions are always coming up : )...

Also, if I'm just using a single monitor setup, is there any value to the swap-time waitout variable?

Thanks in advance for your time,

I will leave this for now and reconsider perhaps when I have more time on my hands to fiddle about

FSX definitely takes some fiddlin' ... more modern sims/games will profile your system for you and configure settings appropriately.  There are 3rd party products that attempt to do this but not always successful (based on trial and error also) ... the SDK doesn't tell you what all the FSX.CFG settings mean and their relevance in DX9 vs. DX10.  Phil Taylor did his best to provide info, but without more details the community has to rely on trial and error which isn't the best approach to coming to a repeatable conclusion.

If you also combine the different ways of producing 3rd party scenery, objects, etc. etc. that can add another dimension in the complexity and performance aspects.  For example:

"If there is transparency within a cell at any LOD level, the terrain system has to load in multiple files to piece together the terrain texture for each cell."

This explains A LOT to me about some of the issues I was having with some scenery ... it's not just file quantity (enabled scenery) but also how those files are created that can cause a bandwidth and CPU saturation.

Hey, Alex!

Yeah - pricey!! Washing dishes, cleaning the windows, walking the dogs, grass-cutting - man - you have no idea how pricey!!

Performance? Yes - immediately it allowed for BP=0, and additional (very visible heavy overcast) weather.

A single monitor allows comparatively much higher settings than when using the TH2Go or Surround. The monitor(s) choice and overall screen size has as as much effect as bumping up the proc speed. 3840 x 1024 and 5760 x 1080 are very hard on the system, as every pixel has to be painted every second.

SWTO? Yes, but try it at 0, 1, 2, 10, 20, 30 - just to see, in a very heavily populated area, with lots of traffic, AG AI, etc - make it show squares if at all possible, adhusting as you test. If 30 is default - it's wrong nowadays - mine certainly likes the "2".

All the Best,

pj

Lol thanks Paul, I will try the "free" tweak of swap time waitout as you suggested first. Overall performance is good, just enjoy trying to squeeze another drop or two out of fsx dx10.

I see a 780 in my (probably somewhat distant) future...

Paul what are your thoughts on a 4GB 770 vs. the 780?  I'm looking to replace my aged 560Ti very soon but won't quite be able to spring for a 780.  The only reason I'll pull off a 770 is due to having about $90 in credit with EVGA from doing Folding@Home for them and a few blue ribbons on their forums.

I currently have a GTX570HD and was also looking at the 770.  But, then I read that the 770 was based on the same chip as the GTX670 and GTX680.  That doesn't mean it's not a great video card but I'm looking at the 780 instead and hoping that the prices will drop a bit soon.

    ..... I'm not you, Rick, but in my mind - and you can see my FSX philosophy below my sig - there's no question, the "GTX-x80" series are the way to go, with the 780 being ahead of the older-tech 680. Here's a good link (a little dated now, but still relevant) for some insight and comparison.

@Flyinion - you'll see some gain with the newer (and higher-range) 770, but it won't give you a much better experience - your issue is still a 3.7 GHZ clock speed, and that means that the 770 will be sitting around, waiting for raw data. The good part is that it will still be a good GPU to match with a higher-speed proc when it comes, and at $390 (NewEgg) - it's a pretty good buy!

All the Best,

pj

AMD's 9000 series may come out early in October for retail ... this might push down the prices of the 780 and Titan "if" they perform.  But NVidia will also be releasing a new card in early 2014.  So pending how long you can wait I think newer cards from both AMD and NVidia are likely to push the prices down.

LOL oops I should have mentioned the 770 is "likely" coming after I upgrade to either a 4770K or an Ivy-E chip later this year when the Ivy-E's come out.  There's a chance I might do the card first but not likely.

...then I would wait for the 780. You will then match the processor with the GPU.

Man, it's great to spend someone else's money!

Hi Paul,

Do you think my system would benefit from a higher end card?  Processor is a AMD 955BE Phenom 2 oc'd to 4GHz and I'm using a GTX560.  Even though the processor is overclocked, I hear AMD are still slower than i5 and i7's of the same speed..

If I could benefit from a new card, would I be able to set higher autogen and scenery complexity?  Or do the higher end cards just give better AA?

I'm in DX9 at the moment waiting for Steve's payware DX10 program.  So I'll be using my system for both DX10 and DX9 (for airports or aircraft that won't work with Steve's fix).

Thanks
