Split-Scimitar Winglet Modeling on the NGX?

Featured Replies

I dread flying that thing this winter. I don't want to be the first to scrape the tip off.

  • We'll see but it would take a change to the flight model too - the whole point of these things is that they add additional fuel savings over the normal winglets.

I for one would pay for a new and improved 737, also I'd be happy with just a visual update to the models, you could add the performance updates later for the Split scimitars.

Hi Pmdg

Ok so i am Engineer for Thomson Airways we have just fitted the split scimitar winglets to around 60% of the fleet, Just wanted to give you a abit for a insite of what is needed to be done to fit

the split scimitar winglets.

1x The wings have to be strengthened from outboard of the Engine to the dry area this is done in the fuel tanks.

2x A tap is fitted from the outboard of  alieron to the wing tip this on the trailing edge. Now this doesn't make much visual different.

3x The Alieron have to re rigged upwards Again not much of a visual differents

4x The Old winglet are sent away to be modified to the split scimitar winglet so the fitting of the winglet is the same.

5x The visual differnt would be the strobe lights there have changed it to flash like the 787, But the rear strobe is still the same flash as before.

Ok so after speaking to a number of pilots there really is no change in the performance, only in crosswinds so i think there have changed it from 36 knots to 30 knots in crosswinds.

I would love to see the split scimitar winglet on the ngx most airlines are now changing to split scimitar winglet ,i don't think it would take much to change the strobe light flash and the modeling

the split scimitar winglet.

I really hope we see a update soon

Keep up the good work

Big issue is the crosswind limitations with SSW. My company is now recomending sideslip landings only 15knts and below.

Also, I finally saw a plane with a missing lower winglet. I don't know the cause.

Hi Matt

I heard that this is one of the the biggest down falls regarding the SSW, I have not yet been told of any division as yet as we have been having really strong winds in UK.

I am still waiting for a fuel truck ur some kind of ground equipment to hit one. I don'nt know what are companys limitations are but it would be interesting to find out.

Add me to the list of people who would like to see a visual update only SSW for the NGX. I have no idea how modeling works, but I'd imagine that it would be relatively simple to change the size/shape of the winglet and add the lower portion without having to go in and change flight dynamics. I think that a free update would be too much to ask as they are already giving us weather radar for free, so maybe have it as a $5-$10 update? Even $20 maybe?

Don't mean to dredge this one up again, but, as with many others, I'm happy with just a visual update. Of course I would love a full performance upgrade, but at this point the visual loss alone of flying a non-SSW 738 is a far greater loss of realism than a visual update without the performance factors as well. This especially as, at least with the airlines I fly in the sim and see in general, there are more SSW-equipped 738s than not.

I would also be happy to pay a small amount for this visual upgrade, as I think it adds a huge amount to the essence of the aircraft.

I don't agree I would pay only for an upgrade of the flight model togheter with visual (scimitars only visual w/o simulating the exact aerodynamics of that model it's a nonsense for me)..I wouldn't pay for a visual change only ... but it's just my  personal opinion...

Frankly, I don't know what all the fuss is about.

Meh. Flight sims appeal to a huge range of people with varied interests. I used it when I was furloughed and wanted to keep up on flying. Others only care about aesthetics or procedures or virtual airlines etc.

actually i wouldnt mind paying 5 to 10 dollars on that, its not a bad idea, and pmdg would also have to put out a paint kit for liveries to be made for the split scimitars

I would like to see this as well.

Well unless there are imminent plans for NGX v2 (and hence it's a stopgap), put me down as "do it properly or not at all".  I don't buy PMDG because they settle for "it'll do", I buy them because they do their damnedest to get it right...

We recently handled a Sun Country 737 with the SSW's at my FBO for a sports charter. I was talking with the mechanic while refueling and he said that their company has already had 2 damaged by ground equipment. I did notice, while pulling up the fuel truck, that the lower part does really come down pretty far. Which is what spurred on the conversation. I would be surprised if we don't see SSW operators start painting at least part of the lower section high vis, if they have not already.

I haven't seen any hi-vis paint jobs yet. It's funny: some airlines paint the antennae on the bottom of the fuselage with hi-vis orange stripes. I'm not sure what's going to hit them down there....
