25+ FPS?

Featured Replies

Hey Gents,

just arrived in El Prat Barcelona (with MegaAirport Addon Scenery).

I´m running an I7 @ 3.5 GHZ... and still getting not more than 17 FPS..

they were around 15 and 16.

How do you guys get good FPS on big airports?

I´m usually only flying to regional airports because of the FPS..i have some WOAI installed..but only running on 33% AI Traffic. My FSX.cfg is tweakd of course..

any further tipps to enjoy bigger airports?

If you can´t read it, you can´t fly it. Real world B777F pilot

It all comes down to tweaking your cfg file, graphics card, overclocking your CPU etc.

Try not getting to obsessed with FPS. If things are running pretty smoothly and you can use your scenery without any stutters or being jerky just fly and enjoy. Sometimes I feel we look at FPS a bit too much when with the FPS we are getting FSX is perfectly useable.

Sounds about right for 3.5GHz in the NGX.  What is your video card?  What about cloud resolutions (ActiveSky or REX)?  Are you at an add-on airport?

It's no secret that AI kills FPS, so if there is quite a bit of AI and clouds around than your FPS will drop like crazy.

NGX is graphically intensive (detailed model, huge textures). They are working on improving this for the 777.

Only option is to reduce the ancillary detail of FSX. FSX was not the best to start with.

Best regards,

Robin.

What type of fps would I expect with I7 intel core 960 @3.20 MHz,,,,,9gb ram,,,GeForce gtx 660 gddr5 192 bit (144.2gb/s)? I have win7 64bit and used the bojote tweak but i'm only getting 15fps..

15 FPS in the NGX?  That's honestly about what I'd expect.  Your CPU is bottlenecking the hell out of that GPU.  FSX needs at least 4.0 GHz to really unleash its potential.  You should be able to overclock that CPU to at least 4.0 GHz with relative ease.

FSX is coded to only take advantage of 2 cores and it can't utilize Hyperthreading.  So, the only other option is to get as high of MHz per core as you possibly can.  Essentially, overclocking is a must with the CPUs out today.

Sacwarrior what scenery are you getting 15fps at? If it's at Anchorage X I would guess like 30 fps like me.

I am not too concerned with the actual numbers, as long as the experience doesn't turn into a slideshow. At extremely detailed airports with lots of 3rd party stuff, I will see between 12-18 FPS while on ground, after I'm airborne it will pick up to 18+. I have my FPS locked to 30, and it usually gets there.

Things get a bit slow only when I'm in a very urban area such as KLAX or KJFK. At KJFK I am using FSDT KJFK v2.1 airport, Aerosoft Manhattan X, Megasceneryearth New Jersey, REX, UTX, GEX, OpusFSX, EZDOK, and I'm running at 2560x1600 resolution. With 4096 textures in my fsx.cfg and 2048 cloud textures set in REX

In order for me to fly in these areas without too many problems, I'd have to take my LOD_RADIUS down to about 4.5. Normally I leave it at 8.5

Only add on I have is NGX. I don't have extra scenery or weather programs. But if I may ask is the only thing that might keep me from getting better fps is my 3.20 ghz processor? I've spent so much on this pc from dell that I hate to think I got screwed.

In terms of FSX, a stock i7 isn't going to do anything impressive.  The primary problem is that FSX isn't coded to take advantage of more than 2 cores (of 8 in an i7) and it can't take advantage of Hyperthreading.  Therefore, the only other option is to overclock those 2 cores as high as you can to get the most MHz out of those 2 cores as possible - which is what FSX cares about.  When playing FSX 6 of your cores are useless.

I don't know if building a PC was an option for you so I can't speculate.  I just built a PC for myself for $900 and I have all FSX sliders to MAX, except Traffic which is at 60%, and I run the NGX with Active Sky 2012 clouds and still max out at 35 FPS (external FPS limiter is set to 35).  I have an i5 4670K, which is 3.4 GHz stock and 4 cores, overclocked to 4.4GHz.  With the exception of our CPU speeds, we have pretty much the same PC - so you see how big of a difference my 4.4 GHz is compared to your 3.2 GHz is in FSX.  I'm to the point to where my GTX 660 is bottlenecking my CPU, otherwise I could go higher.

Sebastian, that scenery has some 32bit textures in it and has an adverse effect on FPS. If I remember correctly the Aerosoft Madrid also has some 32bit textures mixed in as well.

You can increase the performance of the scenery by going into the Barcelona texture folder and converting the 32bit textures to DXT5 and it will help the FPS as well as lower VAS at the same time. You can use a freeware tool like DXTBmp (google it). All you need to do is open the 32bit files in DXTBmp and then resave them as DXT5. You can easily spot the 32bit files in that sceneries texture folder by sorting the textures files from larger size to smaller size. The 32bit ones are the ones with the largest file size.

On old Core2Due overclocked to 3.8ghz and 2GB RAM, I could get around 25 to 30 FPS at that airport in the NGX with WOAI traffic after converting those files. Why the developer didn't offer that fix themselves is another story but its easy to fix yourself.

I'm no expert in the technical side of computers, but by adding an Affinity Mask in to the FSX cfg file make more of the CPU's cores available

I have an i5 3570k and have the entry in my cfg file (JOBSCHECDULER) AffinityMask=14

It is a potiental PC you have if the motherboard allow you to overclock that CPU to 3.8 or 4.0ghz . (remember a good CPU-Cooler like the H70-H100 from Corsair forinstance) 15fps sounds a little low .

In the meantime try this.

AI traffic to 0% Water to HIGH 1x should release some FPS for you. Autogen at Normal.

Also remember to have your HDD optimized and restart PC after this.

DX10 preview is the only way i am getting regardless of the minor issues (which Steve is fixing in a new payware software). DX10 will give you very very smooth and stable experience at around 18-23 FPS.

PS! I sometimes get more FPS when using Active Sky 2012 rather than the default weather engine.

I really hope that PMDG is going to produce Addons that take benefit of multicore CPUs like Majestic Softwares Dash 8.

I'm running the Dash 8 with weather and scenery addons, Autogen etc. at 60 FPS locked at any Airport. (i7-3820 @ 4.4 Ghz / Nvidia GTX 770).

regards,

Tom
