The Importance of VSync

Featured Replies

Hrmm I have FSX running pretty smoothly. I have the FSX limiter set to 30 and the nvidia inspector vertical sync at 1/2. I'm afraid to try anything new, kinda paranoid that it might mess everything up.

At busy airports with heavy scenery I get about 10-15fps.

Weird, isn't it?

Dirk.

PS: not sure on the spikes in excess of 30 though, I think Inspector still caps fps.

Well in mine when I dont have a demanding scenery I get some spikes. Mine doesnt cap the fps completely. But I dont get any stutters so its fine for me.

Or when flying around big cities set the FSX fps to unlimited and keeping the "refresh rate" or "1/2 refresh rate" in nVidia.  Has anyone tried this?

That's what we are talking about in this thread.  It seems to be pretty unanimous that it is the ideal.

Setting your VSync to your refresh rate is going to bring your system to a crawl in FSX.  Unless you have top of the line hardware than your PC won't be able to handle it.

Mine is the same.  I have Inspector set to 35 and it is somewhat spikey over 35 at times, but it is still stutter free so it doesn't matter to me.

For some,  setting pre render to 1 in NVsp.can eliminate spikes.

No, fps should be set to 30 with vsync 1/2, not to unlimited. Feel free to try anything and report back if you get better results, but this is the real deal for smooth FSX  ^_^

Just to clarify, the most important thing for me is smoothnes, not fps. Try to observe stutters and especially microstutters when you run unlimited fps. With combination of 1/2 refresh rate + 30fps locked internaly you should get smooth flight without them. There will be fps drop arround payware bussy airports in payware complicated airliners, but this is stll the best solution / compromise for me

P.S. This was for mfastx

Can someone tell me if my settings are okay for use with FSX and P3D or if I need to make some adjustments.

Why starting with 'No'?

As mentioned some including myself observe much better FPS in heavy scenarios with PMDG737 and complex airports. Works much better overall. In rural areas I sometimes revert back to 30 fps cap in fsx.cfg.

DX9 or 10 ?

Badfinger those are for DX9

Ok, cool. Give me an hour, I will post my DX9 settings for you. Not at my fsx rig at the moment. I can see you have some settings there that are bit off.

Also, go into NVinsp and export your current settings, for back up.

@captain420...

Try setting "Antialiasing Mode" to 4 x Multisampling and "Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling" to 4 x Sparse Grid Supersampling".

This will give a sharper looking image without much shimmer. Your 680 should handle it fine.

You can also try setting "Anisotropic filtering mode" to "Application controlled" and make sure you have Anisotropic filtering set inside fsx/p3d.

Set "Multi display/mixed-GPU acceleration" to "Single display performance mode".

Set "Maximum pre-rendered frames" to 1.

I guess you're running quite a high resolution on that 30" screen, so if that 4 x sparse grid supersampling setting makes your GPU usage hit 100%, then try 2 x sgss instead,

or maybe 16xS antialiasing and 4 x supersamling for transparency.

Use Nvidia Inspector and leave the "Sensor monitoring" window open while running FS for a while, then go check the graphs, especially the GPU usage graph. You always want to NOT hit 100% here.

This tip is something for everyone to help figure out what your gfx card is able to handle in terms of diffrerent antialiasing modes.

Really? Okay will do. I'm curious to know what settings are off. Makes me excited that maybe I can get a little boost of performance by fixing it.

Aaron, Peter has the same set up as me, follow his tips.

Peter, yes I am running at 2560x1600. I will definitely give those settings a try and see how it goes. Because right now my performance is pretty good. But I'm always interested in finding ways to make it run faster. I welcome your suggestions. Now, as far as those settings goes, will I need to change anything for my fsx.cfg? This is what it looks like currently. If you don't mind, could you briefly skim through it to see if there are any changes or something out of place that I can change to make it better.

Thank you! :)
