The Importance of VSync

Featured Replies

It looks OK to me, except for an uncommented line in your [main] section. The line says "but may result in stuttering...".

Comment it out with "//" or delete it altogether.

It may be that it doesn't affect anything, but it's best to fix it.

[edit] Yes, Badfinger is right about those. A LOD at 6.5 should be good enough.

I have no experience with Hyperthreading, but remember reading that having it on may cause worse performance.

Julian & Peter, thank you so much for your suggestions. I will give this a go when I get home today and see if there are any improvements. Can I use these same settings for P3D as well?

I don't have P3D, so not sure. Won't hurt to try.

WinWing FCU, EFIS, MCDU

The only things you need to add for P3D are the bufferpools, jobscheduler and FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION.

I can't say I'm that computer literate but how do you turn off Hyper Threading?

This is only relevant if you have a CPU with "virtual cores" and you turn these off in the BIOS/UEFI.

Say you have a 3770K for example, they have 4 physical cores plus 4 virtual cores, 8 cores (threads) in total.

Running all 8 cores is only useful if your app/game supports it (hyperthreading).

Photoshop, video editing and 3D modelling software are a few examples. It has little to no use with FSX/P3D as far as I know.

I rather not turn off HT, i rely on other apps or games that may use it. So I'll guess I'll keep the affinity setting and try the rest.

Thanks for the info.

I've got an i7 2700. Do I gain in performance if I turn off HT?

You will gain a lower temp for your CPU

Don't turn it off, it makes very little difference in the performance of any flight sim, one way or the other.

With no AM entry, all main cores are used, and no HT cores, with HT on or off (same ae AM=15). The purpose of the tweek is to tell FSX to ignore core 0 and move to core 1 and put the threads on cores 2 and 3 (AM=14). If HT is on, AM=254 will cause FSX to also use the 4 HT virtual cores. This setting will cause the cpu temp to rise. Mine goes from 62C too 75C. The tweek should make FSX smoother without affecting fps very much.

14 and 84 work the same with HT on.

Please post a screen shot of Inspector and that of fsx settings.  Maybe a copy of the fsx.cfg would also help.

Ted

I've attached the 2 images on this reply. My cfg is default.  I deleted it the other day and let fsx build a new one.  Only things I've changed are texture max load to 4096, added disable preload for faster initial load time, and hide info text to get rid of the red texts.

I'm going to play around with triple buffering and maximum pre rendered frames next.

Hello Maurice,

Yeah, there are still a few "anomolies", however the hope is that Steve Parson's payware DX10 fixall repair program will fix all that.  Should be available "soon", whatever that means in the flight sim world.

Thanks Dennis,

I didn't know Steve was working on a payware all out fix.  That should be interesting and I'm looking forward to it.

I've had a decent amount of success with adding converter X.

Fixes blank AI, and scenery. Most not all. So if you can't wait for Steve's final fixes, try that out.

I looked into that when I first started DX10 but I have a few CLS heavies that I hear doesn't work properly with it.  But I may give it a shot for VFR.  The water and vibrant colors is what I like most about DX10.

Why starting with 'No'?

As mentioned some including myself observe much better FPS in heavy scenarios with PMDG737 and complex airports. Works much better overall. In rural areas I sometimes revert back to 30 fps cap in fsx.cfg.

Dirk.

I started with no becouse that post was in response to "mfastx" question.

Better fps and "works much better overall" are not crucial for best fsx experience and smoothnest. Especialy "works much better overall".

If you turn off fps counter, what other things are better in your opinion?

In general - Steady fps = smooth. Unlocked fps = spikes(especialy in non rural areas).

From what i know unlocked fps can help with fps in rural areas, so unlocked in non-rural and reverting to locked 30fps in rural areas may be wrong... Or may warry on some systems and some FSX users

For me, 1/2 refresh rate and internal fps limiter to 30 works best, it gives me steady fps and smooth flight

For some reason, big spikes are not affecting my smoothness with frames locked in NI.

In Aerosoft Madeira I get very high frames that spike to well over 100fps without locking in NI, but when locked in NI, the scenery is very smooth with NI keeping frames between 29-31.

Lost in translation, B247NG, "urban" vs "rural"? Otherwise see your second post in this thread.

For me 30 fps locked in fsx.cfg can really hurt with pmdg737 in a heavy airport, there is no smoothness receiving 17-19 fps at all. It IS BAD seeing 28-30 fps tumble to 18-19 fps  when turning my POV towards object clots (buildings, airplanes etc). While 26 fps is visually much smoother in the same scenario, as 30 to 26 fps is not that much of a fall, it just requires fps unlimited in fsx.cfg and 30 locked in Instructor, get it now? 1/2 refresh rate in both cases.

Thanks,

Dirk.

PS: just note that the above occurs in a cloudy and rainy wx (cloud density @12, 80miles, 14+ layers in AS2012), those frames above are my absolute minimum, my base line I build upon. In light wx 30 fps locked in fsx.cfg will be smoother, but then I don't care much when flying airliners.
