August 12, 201312 yr JRB I always used to write it as "Nil illegitimum carborundum est" but I met a wandering Roman (Julius somebody or other) and it was he that gave me the mock Latin aphorism that I now use. I like it better than "Non carborundum ######um" - much more refined, don't yah think?. pH Perhaps it was the Roman in this classic scene? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbI-fDzUJXI Jim BarrettLicensed Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, Avionics, Electrical & Air Data Systems Specialist. August 12, 201312 yr This has been a fun side trip indeed. Sometimes a little "good natured" fun (unless you are on the receiving end perhaps) is needed. Especially when it might be at the expense of your favorite demon. I learned many years ago that a more correct translation of the Latin phrase "Illegitimus non carborundum est" might be "don't let the B......'s grind you down. It seems to be one of those phrases--sayings--that don't entirely translate into English. Dan George (woodhick)Check out Greenbrier Aero Club, the VA for and about the GA pilot.
August 12, 201312 yr more correct translation of the Latin phrase "Illegitimus non carborundum est" might be "don't let the B......'s grind you down Actually not really Latin - but the phrase 'Iligitimi non carborundum' (translating to the same as above) is attributed to WW II British army intelligence and was the motto (posted on his desk) of General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell (Commander, China-Burma-India geographical command). August 12, 201312 yr That's truly interesting. I had no idea that it came from a real world source. And yes, I sure know who "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell was--I'm an old guy. No, I always knew it wasn't real Latin but just a humorous saying. Dan George (woodhick)Check out Greenbrier Aero Club, the VA for and about the GA pilot.
