How to fly the aircraft without 2D panel?

Featured Replies

I am not a big fan of the VC either, but I stuck my 1st 777 landing at KEWR with a 16 KT crosswind. The reason I like the 2D better, is that the VC needs to be at 40% view and the damn runway seems so small.

But we have to live with the VC forever. No sense in beating a dead horse.

40%??!! No wonder the runway seems so tiny. You might as well be sitting in the cabin. Haha. In all seriousness, though, I can't understand why folks are using such zoomed out views in the VC. IRL the pilot's viewpoint is closer to the 90% setting. You shouldn't be able to look eyes forward and see the entire panel. It's just not realistic.

Is there a key combination to move the view point like we see in the videos?

Have you tried to hold down spacebar while moving mouse? Scroll wheel to zoom in - out.

The following key combos will also move view points:

ctrl+shift+enter

ctrl+shift+backspace

shift+enter

shift+backspace

ctrl+enter

ctrl+backspace

I don't mind the VC now. I forced myself to use it exclusively on the NGX months ago knowing that the 777 would not have any 2D and have become quite used to it.

I still find the strangest thing about it is that it is actually the direct opposite of reality. In the real world everything in the cockpit is in a fixed position and you move your head and eyes to look around at things. With VC, your head stays still and everything else moves. With track IR, sure, you move your head to the side to look out the window, but then you're no longer looking at the monitor, you're looking at a picture of your aunt Agnes on the wall.

Anyway, it's here to stay and it is done extremely well in the 777. There are views set up for the overhead panels and radio stack that are actually better than the 2d equivalents IMO. Try to make the best of things rather than fighting it.

TrackIR hurts my neck. It's unrealistic because in the real aircraft, I can see plenty keeping my head still and just moving my eyes. You can't do that with TrackIR obviously. Looking at anything off-screen requires you to move and contort your neck.  I prefer the 2D panel myself but I'm trying to get used to the VC. Gonna give EZdok another try.

You do realise you can pause TrackIR, and fully customise its sensitivity? I am pretty sure most that complain about TrackIR have either never used it or have never touched any of the options.

Yes I do know that. I even have one of the buttons on my yoke programmed to F9 just for that purpose. And yes I have played with the settings many times. I've also tried other user profiles off the internet.

Well then something doesnt sound right if you are getting neck pain, then again I have no idea how old you are or what medical conditions you may have. What about setting up preset camera views?

I'm 30 years old and have no medical conditions. It just doesn't feel natural or comfortable compared to when I'm flying real airplanes. Like I said earlier, I'm just going to give EZdok another shot. I don't like how EZdok jumps if your not set at the same "zoom" in every view though. Right now I'm just using the hat switch and the preset views until I get comfortable.

On a side note, I have a Logitech G15 keyboard with macro keys on the left side. Is there a way to bind them to views? With EZdok they just register as the F keys (F1-F10).

I would have thought that the more expensive price of the 777 at least they should have given you the option to have a 2D panel. If they can't afford it to give it for free, then lets have an option then to buy it.

Thee 777 is a beautiful aircraft but the missing 2D panel makes my first choice the 737NX

We had a thread last week along this line that got locked.

It was brought up that we could start a thread somewhere in the general forums about how to deal with VC best. And talk about how to use and optimise TrackIR, EZdok OPUS and other utilities.

Anybody interested?

Wow, someone read the manual! ;)

Or at least the Introduction - how to easily and quickly change the view point is covered exceptionally well.  Page 125.

There is a wealth of information in Introduction which will lead to a far more enjoyable and trouble free experience.

Best wishes to the OP, hope this helps.

Don't  know  where  you have  been  for the past year or so  pmdg have stated  many times  that they are not  doing  2d panels any more. So  users  that who have bought the t7  knew  what they were getting  and now  expecting  pmdg to  provide 2d  panels not  going to happen.

I never liked the VC - the view is stuck in one place and looking around is a miserable experience - looking up at the upper panel you need to twist your head 90 degrees to look at the switches and knobs.   Maybe it's me and I may not be doing something right, but I seriously miss the 2D panel view right now.   I don't have any of the fancy trackIR or similar device.   Is there a key combination to move the view point like we see in the videos?  I looked around the documentation, found references to popup but these are just big squares appearing on the screen.

Can we ask for the 2D panel back?   is that an option?

Any tips, info would be appreciated,

Michel.

Completely agree with you.

After paid, they will not care about your preferred plane my friend.

I had a TERRIBLE experience flying last month.  I had to LOOK around the cockpit the whole time because my RPM gauge was over on the FO's side!  It was TOTALLY unrealistic and STUPID!  All of that looking around is ridiculous!  All of the information should be right in front of my eyes without turning my head at all!!!  RPM is super important, and you can damage the engine without being able to see it!!!

I even had to CRANE my head around to see which lights I was turning on and off...WHAT AN INCONVENIENCE!!!

TERRIBLE modeling!!!  I can't believe that the VC is such a difficult thing to use!!!

...oh wait, that was the DA40 I was flying in real life.

Come on guys.  Just because you're used to everything being served up to you on a silver platter (unrealistically, mind you), doesn't mean that the VC is bad.  It means that you're relying on an old crutch and you're just resisting the change.  I've been there.  Welcome to 2013.  It's time to face the change.  Times are a-changin'!
