September 13, 201312 yr We all know that tweaking FSX can take several hours. My question is, do you spend more time tweaking than flying? Out of probally 60 hours over the past few weeks, I believe I've spent atleast 55 tweaking. Is that normal?
September 13, 201312 yr When I initially got FSX, I spent more time tweaking. I think I am gotten my tweaking bug out of my system, and I enjoy flying more now, as I finally have my system set to where I like it. I think FSX has matured to a point where all the "mad scientists" in the community have figured out all the tricks needed to squeeze the most performance out of our hardware and the software, and address the common crashes and workarounds, that we can just now relax and enjoy our flights. I enjoyed my tweaking phase, as I learned a lot about my pc and software theory in general, but I tired of it and nowadays just want to fly, as constantly trying out new tricks and discovering that some don't work is exhausting, and can be a real time waster. In fact, I would love to upgrade my hardware at the moment, but I hesitate because I don't want to deal with any hiccups when I swap out parts and deal with the possibility of reinstalls or crashes. Not to mention all the time needed when I overclock the new CPU. I just want to savor the new 777 and PFPX on my current stable system! A.J. Domingo
September 13, 201312 yr No. Mine is tweaked set up, and runs just perfectly I always fly.. Of course it took time to tweak it when I got the upgrade But my flying hours are way over tweaks

Out of probally 60 hours over the past few weeks, I believe I've spent atleast 55 tweaking. Is that normal? No, that is not normal, at least not for me ;o) I would say about 0.1% of my time w/ FSX open is 'tweaking'. I have a few adjustments I make before flights to maintain the kind of total performance I'm after, but no other attempts at improving performance in general cuz it's clearly...good 'nuf ;o) Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. September 13, 201312 yr Author Well, I wouldn't say tweaking but "shopping". My system is running fine, and I'm getting great performance from my computer, I'm just spending a lot of time building my fleet.
September 13, 201312 yr Normal? It depends if your hobby is tweaking or flying. Personally I don't tweak, I just fly. I see no reson to tweak. I also stay away from exotic addons to avoid hours of troubleshooting when something goes wrong. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
September 13, 201312 yr In the world of computers applications, FSX is like a museum piece, so it does take a lot of effort to keep it flying. I'd say I spend about 50% of the time fixing some bug or error. -
September 13, 201312 yr I use to tweak a lot but now i have them so im very happy with the sim i can do more flying -Paul-
September 13, 201312 yr After reinstalling I usually spend 10-15 minutes applying the standard fixes. Then I load up FSX to verify that it's running ok before going back to playing Civilization 5 or Kerbal Space Program. Rolf Lindbom
September 13, 201312 yr I don't run my FSX with tons of tweaks. If I start a fresh config, I usually just add the required tweaks (eg. Highmemfix, VSync), but don't go overboard. Takes about 5 minutes to set up, then the rest of the time is spent flying. Jeff Thomson
September 13, 201312 yr I never reinstalled FSX and I hardly tweak. For me it's a fresh fsx.cfg plus the Bojote tool (which also includes the HIGHMEMFIX). I would even delete the AffinityMask entry after running that tool. No reinstalls, no CTDs, last OOM was a looong time ago. I DO get freezes and my frame rates aren't really up to where I want them to be. But fps are acceptable, things run smoothly. I'm particularly amazed about the solid smooth performance of the PMDG T7. So it's mainly about flying - and checking AVSIM during cruise! What happened to AVSIM
September 13, 201312 yr I guess it depends on what you can do and what you want out of it ... Like everyone I want the best from my setip so spend a bit of time trying new tweeks. I'm also a scenery designer and 3D modeller so I spend alot of time 'tweeking' my scenery and creating new models/objects. In the process of creating 'notable and visual from the air' objects around my local airport. Just got in to addon-mesh and busy developing desiging 'Morph Mesh' to blend airports which have elavation issues with 3rd party mesh. I also do the odd re-paint (new A2A 172 re-paint in production (vintage 70's) will be available here as a downlod when done). Also making my own add-on hardware switch panels and alike. When i'm not doing all of that I even like to fly FSX LOL Developing/tweeking = 75% Flying = 25% Rich
September 13, 201312 yr About two weeks ago I had to do a system recovery, so all I've been doing since is tweaking. Keeping up with things is fun for me, enjoy it just as much as flying.
September 13, 201312 yr Right now I don't tweak at all but I was about to give up about a year ago and just stay with FS9. I have no idea what has changed because the few tweaks I have made, are the same I have always done and the hardware hasn't changed. I am prepared that any day the gremlings can be back. So nothing changes in my room. If there is a pen on a desk that wasn't there yesterday, I remove it so that it won't trigger the return of The Mother Of All OOM's. well kinda... I do take mirrors of the partition so hopefully I can get back on track if something goes wrong I can even fly on Vatsim with SB4 which was simply a no go before.
