EFB addition

Featured Replies

Just wondered what the general consensus on having a working EFB in the vc would be amongst customers. I understand that a fully comprehensive efb would not be possible within the confines of this addon for various reasons but im talking about a simplified version that first and foremost allows performance calculations such as v speeds etc etc. and additionally if it were possible to programme it in such a way as to be able to add pdf docs for charts so users could provide their own for charts and approach plates this would be adequate for me personally.

so I just wondered who else would be happy with this as an update but at extra cost maybe. I would not mind paying a reasonable amount extra for this addition although excellent as the 777 is already an efb in this form would just complete it nicely.

any thoughts about this idea?

PMDG isn't going to half-___ a weather radar, so I'm betting they won't half-___ an EFB. I doubt you'll see anything until there's seamless integration of a realistic EFB.

...and that wouldn't include some half-rate PDF viewer.

The only aspect of it I would use would be performance calculations to determine appropriate de-rates.  Otherwise, I have no interest in trying to view charts within the virtual cockpit.  I print 'em out or view them in the ol' acrobat reader on-screen.

Captain Sim has an EFB in their 777, I think that it would be possible in PMDG's Triple 7.

That CS efb is nothing more than a jpeg viewer...

It is possible, because I use it...works great for what it is, w/negligible frame hit.  It displays .gif images....never got it to display .pdf or .jpg file types.  For details on how to install it (can be done w/any aircraft), see this topic: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/375543-aerosims-787-for-fsx-released/page-3 - Al's steps are listed in post #74.  Make a backup copy of the T7's panel folder before you start!  One note - copy all files he indicates directly into the panel folder, and it works.

Thanks, I will try it. But I think that it would be great if PMDG added the EFB to the Virtual Cockpit.

Except, they don't.... They have something that looks vaguely similar to an EFB. It's not about how it looks, but what it does. Displaying .gif files, is not exactly an aspect of a real life EFB.

Yes, I know, but It's good enough for me.

Yes, it's fine for me, too.  Note that it's a 2-d popup window, available from the Views menu & will be listed as the last view entry.  And you'll have to re-open it whenever you change views from the VC.

For now, I am happy loading all the charts I'll need into a second monitor and pretending it's a 2d EFB popup window.  I'll be happy when PMDG puts out the real deal, it'll be groundbreaking.

The EFB discussion is getting to the same levels of weather radar for me, in terms of its annoyingness.

"I DON'T KNOW REALLY WHAT IT DOES, BUT SOMEONE MADE ONE, AND I WANT IT!!!"

...it doesn't do most of what a real EFB does.  All it's doing is displaying crappy images of charts that you had to convert yourself, and are now inconvenienced by in terms of having to look over and zoom in absurd amounts.

"I DON'T CARE!!! I WANT IT!!!"

If you want partially-functional eye candy, there are other developers for that.
