November 26, 201312 yr Just speculating on the future. Where do you think entertainment simmers we'll be in 5 years? Economically I don't think there is room for 3 flight sims in the main stream. At Least one will fall, perhaps two? Possibilities.... 1) FSX falls, X-Plane falls, and P3D takes over with a entertainment license. 2) FSX falls, P3D falls and X-Plane takes over 3) FSX falls, P3D is the serious commercial training Sim, and X-Plane becomes the new mainstream entertainment Sim. 4) Some other Sim in the works we don't know about yet takes over. 5) Any other scenarios? I think in all cases, FSX will be dying a slow death, and that's a good thing! What do you think?
November 26, 201312 yr 5 years from now, FSX will still be the dominant platform. So many products have been developed, and are being developed that it increases feasible technologies, and makes it more and more uneconomical for so many dedicated users to change. Inactive

I'm not so sure I think alot of people will leave FSX behind once P3D V2's launch hicups are taken care of. As it is still supported and is being updated I can honestly say I won't be going back to FSX anytime soon as p3d's graphics are bloody amazing. ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. November 26, 201312 yr I am a little behind with this P3D thing. From what I think I know isn't it pretty expensive? And you need to buy a yearly license or something? Also from what I think I know most add ons and scenery don't work for it including AI Traffic add ons. But I also think P3D uses are newer machines better which gives us better graphics but with lower hits on performance? I would love to see a new platform take advantage of our newer machines. But I want that platform to be like FSX as an entertainment license. If PMDG, scenery developers and an AI Traffic developer go to P3D I can see a major shift. Clearly PMDG intends too. But it might take more than 5 years to see FSX go "bye bye" but I certainly see it and hope it does in 10 years. Steven Herzberg, "I rather be flying"

No once you buy P3d its yours and most addons work for it in fact I have FTXG,Rex, and all of my Carenado planes in P3D V2 as we speak most other addons will be working within a month or so and most for free if you own a fsx copy. I got the acidemic version so it was $60 not all that expensive. For addons that don't come with a p3d V2 installer you just use the migration tool to convert them to P3D ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. November 26, 201312 yr People will still be asking for 2D panels, and if it will run on FS9. Someone had to say it! Brent Lewis
November 26, 201312 yr People will still be asking for 2D panels, and if it will run on FS9. Someone had to say it! Hahahaha. Absolutely true. A PC-based flight sim takes about 3 or 4 years (perhaps more) until the most simmers community accept it as the standard. After this average time, is when the major addons developers, usually begin their projects. Too much time for our new, fast and powerful machines. The modern simmer prefer to deal with FSX and its limitations instead start with that long process of learning a new flight sim platform. We like it or not, seems like we'll still have FSX for long time. Sent from my iPad with Tapatalk HD Ivan Lewis PMDG B737NGX, B777 and B747v3 QOTS II
November 26, 201312 yr Yes I have been thinking and dreading about the absolute worst case scenario. FSX and X Plane shall fall leaving only P3D who refuse to add an entertainment licence. Result - We all have to fake being students and pay $500 for every new PMDG release. Oh. My. God!
November 26, 201312 yr 3) FSX falls, P3D is the serious commercial training Sim, and X-Plane becomes the new mainstream entertainment Sim. This. --Peter Fabian
November 26, 201312 yr This. With "dual-use" developers not only aiming at two completely different target groups, but also producing on two different platforms, with hardly any common code in between them? That's close to the worst case scenario, but I actually agree with that conjecture! What happened to AVSIM
November 26, 201312 yr Out of nowhere- Aerofly releases a full world flight simulator. http://www.aeroflyfs.com/ Keep an eye on these guys.
November 26, 201312 yr Commercial Member Threads like this remind me every day that people rarely ever look under the surface. I loved blowing people's minds when they said FSX was just a game, and then showed them simulators running MS ESP. Granted, all of that is now P3D, but still... As far as five years from now, who knows. I just hope there's a sim to fly planes in when I'm not flying in the real world. Kyle Rodgers

Airplanes saved the day in that movie! haha Kyle Rodgers
November 26, 201312 yr (...) FALSE! We could've used those in the movie Independence Day. Airplanes saved the day in that movie! haha In that very movie, the US American President jumped into a fighter jet and flew that thing as if he were current on that type. Wondering which desktop simulator he had been using to prepare () for "Independence Day"!!! What happened to AVSIM
