GTX 680 4GB or 780 3GB for V2

Featured Replies

I have a great card for 1.4 but I was wondering if I should get the 780 when I move to V2. The obvious answer is to get the 780 but it has less memory. I plan to have V2 maxed out with add-on scenery and cloud textures.

I have the ASUS GTX680 4GB, which is an incredible card, but is now discontinued. Pretty lame since I was planning on going SLI but now that's impossible.

If you really want P3Dv2, then why don't you check out the performance with your current 4GB 680GTX card before making a final decision?

The 680 4GB will do great in P3D from reports I've seen.

I'd stick with it.

Ebay.

I've bought my last three cards used. You can even find some still under warranty. So much better then paying full price IMO.

780.. While not a dramatic leap over a 680, it still decently out performs a 680..  More Cuda cores, and a 384-Bit memory interface width compared to a 256-Bit.. It's a faster card even though the cores are clocked lower than a 680...  Plus, that extra GB of VRAM is golden

Edit: Just saw.. He already has a 4GB 680... Dude.. You don't need to upgrade.... You're golden as it is..

LM recommends 2GB+ for video card memory, and I noticed through the forums that someone has already had their video card memory at close to 3GB of usage while using V2. So my question really is a which is more important for V2, the increased CUDA cores and memory bus on a 780, or the extra physical memory on the 680?

I have a 4GB 680GTX, FWIW, I'm sticking with it.

Yeah I might do that. Just a little nervous buying a used card.

As posted elsewhere, am getting good results with mine except with combined overcast and heavy shadows.  Am not sure any card can handle that combo adequately, but for what it's worth, I'm wondering if a Titan might be more effective, especially given the 6 GB Vram.  Had been eyeing a 780 ti but don't want to go down from 4 GB to 3 GB Vram.  Would welcome any thoughts about these options.  Thanks in advance!

Look into a 770 4gb it uses 1ghz faster memory than a 680. Other than that it uses an optimized 680 gpu I just picked mine up for $375 with rebate MSI twin frozer

Just ordered a 770 4gb as well. Just couldn't justify the extra $$$ for a 780. Coming on Friday. I'll do a comparison between my 570 and 770.

Acutally not exactly unhappy with performance currently (20-35 fps in most circumstances, and quite smooth) so I feel like the 770 should give me some decent headroom and the ability to play with shadows (a bit).

P3d doesn't utilize SLI yet.

Not only does v2.0 not support SLI (they hope to have it in v2.1), keep in mind that you would still only have 2GB of VRAM...
