OOM'S (yes another thread about it)

Featured Replies

...been using DX10 since Acceleration came out because FSX is smoother, and it's true you will get a little more memory headroom using DX10 since more work is done on the GPU. The 777 is not bad with memory, you need not worry about it, but loading up high res airports and scenery is a killer.

I find the 777 to be the worst payware plane of all my planes when it comes to vas usage. Granted the scenery is the real killer but the 777 pushes me into an OOM on flights where I do not hit it with other payware planes on the same flight.

I loaded up a fresh default FSX and a stock B350, then loaded the 777 and VAS crept up by 700Mb, let's face it, that's not a lot.

I'm merely stating my experience over the last couple of months comparing vas usage of different payware planes. I made clear the real problem is scenery etc, but the 777 pushes me over the edge whereas other payware planes actually allow me to touchdown on the same exact flight. YMMV.

The list of items above is very good for preventing OOMs.  I have also found that, when I'm flying IFR at high altitudes, I can also turn off UTX through the Scenery Config Manager and it will make a difference when flying the long flights with the PMDG 777.

Sure but what I'm inferring is addons expected to use more resources may need the LOD Radius dropped a notch or the Autogen, to allow for the extra 5-700Mb, but it's not over the top and not a real reason to avoid using the 777, seems unfair on it. Drop a few hangars and vehicles off those high res airports, 777 performs well too.

I must say that this topic is very interesting and the many ways people try to solve these issues are almost ongoing. thanks for all the contributions and discussion in this regard, it has helped many of us!

I agree with Steve:

The T7 is not that much about exploring eye-candy in your addon scenery, it's more about airline flying and systems simulation (in my book, anyway).

Create an 'airliner profile' in your FSX graphics options for the T7 (and others), and change back to a 'sightseeing profile' when you're back in your GA plane.

What happened to AVSIM

  • 2 months later...

I improved VAS (and thereby eliminated OOMs) by turning off static aircraft at addon airports (a custom option of the addon scenery); turning off airport vehicle density in FSX settings; and changing to DX10. With these changes I can now operate the PMDG777 at Mega Helsinki and Mega Oslo v2 no problem even with high-res textures. I can get 3.5GB vas instead of +4GB vas previously.

I have a question about DX10. I currently have DX11.. but everyone is saying DX10 is better. First I can't even find a DX10 download for windows 7, it's all XP. Second thing is it seems like there is all kinda of problems with going back to DX10.. so I would have to buy this DX10 fixer just to get it to work right? Doesn't seem worth it since it was like 35 bucks. DX11 is not better than DX10? Thanks for the help.

I am frustrated with the OOM issue as well. I agree with the mentioned above.. T7 is the worst of all payware. I can fly from a heavy airport to a heavy airport in any other payware plane including the NGX.. but with the T7 I cannot even fly from a default airport to an add on airport without an OOM. I did hear the NGX had this same issue when it first came out and was fixed with a patch.. im sure we will have the same story with SP1 for the T7. Until then...

So what is my FSX using? I looked up DXDIAG and found the version number and it says DX11... So what does that mean then?

i flew from fsdreamteams kjfk to klax yesterday in the 777 from pmdg NO PROBLEMS!

after steves dx10 fixer i have not seen a single OOM with T7 and i have flown many trips in it.

The Question here is not DX11 vs. DX10..... It's rather DX9c vs. DX10....

That still doesn't explain that I have DX11.. so how is my flightsim using DX9c? ... and how would I even download DX10 for flightsim? You can run two different directx's?

Edit: Nevermind, I'm assuming its as simple as checking the preview directx 10 box in the settings.. but I'm still not going to pay 35 bucks for something else just to get the PMDG T7 to work with it.. so I guess it's a lose lose if you dont want to shell out another 35 bucks for a fix.

Because FSX installs DirectX 9.0c itself, and actually states that on the installation screen. Check the \Setup\DX folder in the FSX folder in PC. You'll find files including the names ...d3dx9..."
