Better Rain/Snow?

Featured Replies

Looking to make some better rain/snow than what is provided with P3DV2 ... it looks too synchronized and fake to me.  Anyone have some modified files for this?  (I'm assuming it's some texture file somewhere)

Maybe give it a little more alpha and feel a bit more random?

Cheers, Rob.

  • I know that when you look at rain or snow through night vision goggles it looks like you are flying through hyperspace. And that is only at 80-100 knots.

If its like FSX the textures bmps are the same as FS9s, but in FSX the rain and snow is controlled by the shaders where in FS9 is was rendered as an animation (from what I remember).

I think in FSX and P3D the snow effects need to be tweaked via the shaders to slow down the speed at which it falls or floats. As it stands now it looks like white gravel falling from the sky at that speed.

If I only knew enough about which shader file to tweak I would give it a go myself, however its all Greek to me.

Yeah I recall Steve P's work in DX10 Fixer making changes to the shader code and getting some replacement bmps for rain/snow ... I wonder ... it's DX10 ... pull those over to P3DV2 and see ...

The rain/snow rate does look rather awful, at least to me.. more like you are about to take the Millennium Falcon into hyperspace than rain :).. and on widescreen the cone doesnt fill all 3 screens (at 5760x1080).

Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah they fixed it, but it still looks like we are going through a stargate wormhole :)

Then it's not fixed.

That stinks! I haven't been able to try it out yet. Does it cover 3 screens, at least? I'm planning on re-installing P3D on a new hard drive this weekend. Swapped in a new SSD. Then I'll be able to join in the rediscovery of all that stutters. jk! P3D v2.0 ran well for me, zero stutters, or CTD's.

Hopefully my luck will hold out on that front.

   Cheers, Craig.

Yes fixed. I use surround and rain cover all three screen.

P3D when its freezing in Quebec....well, that's most of the time...

Snow is unusable. I always change snow to rain during winter to be able to fly. Hope LM can fix this at a later stage.

It covers all three screens in 2.1, though i dont think it looks very "real", the whole wormhole effect almost mesmerizes you into a trance :)

Snow is usable. Not as REALISTIC as could be, maybe, but meh, it does the job.

It's been snowing in the Northeast seemingly for weeks...with the OPUS WX engine, REX4 clouds, and LM's version of snow, flying IFR is pretty darn fun, um, I mean it's very challenging, I learn a lot every time. At the moment, am flying KLGA-KMHT in an A321 in real WX, lots of snow. Good stuff.

What's keeping someone from changing the snow and rain textures. There must be a reason REX or another company haven't done anything
