Introducing World2XPlane...

Featured Replies

I'll try later this evening with the new 10.30, but this one doesn't include the increased visibility, so it shouldn't be much different (maybe slightly improved frame rates).

The worst loading time I have is with Germany, which takes about 15mins to load (Using ZL17 with HD Mesh v2, World2XPlane without exclusions). If I add the exclusions into the equation, then the loading time increases by about 5 mins. You have a much more powerful computer than me, and mine can load Amsterdam in a few mins without a crash. Please can you try disabling other scenery you have to see if this fixes it?

Well it was the same even in 10.25 and I only have photoscenery and nothing else.

If I keep it at Default then i don't have any problems.

Hey your i7 is still stronger than my FX 6300

when it crashes maybe you hit the roof of your VRAM?

Nah don't think so. But I will check.

But my FPS is only better without clouds. The clouds are just chomping away the frame rate.

Hmm why are the clouds looking smudged ?

Hi tonywob, its been awhile since I've been here, but does your tool work for lets say Houston, Texas?

it works for every country, as long as it's covered with good enough tagged OSM data of course. Then the library used for the houses should also fit to the country, I don't thing we've got US houses designed so far.

PC Specs: i7 4820K (WC), AsusP9X79, 64GbRam 1866, GTX Titan 6Gb Black Edition, trhustmaster warthog, trackIR5, ...

blacky75, thanks for your response. This tool looks amazing and has a lot of potential. I hope to see US style buildings so that those of us who frequently fly in america can have some fun too. :) Don't forget about us please.

Would also love to see buildings for the Asian region as well. Great work on this!

It will work anywhere in the world, i.e. "World"2XPlane ;-) but it all depends on the source data and models in the library. We still don't have any US-centric buildings, and as of yet nobody has come forward to help out with photographs or models, so it still looks far behind in comparison to Europe. That being said, in 0.5.0, there are now more "global" buiildings which should look good in any country, e.g. Old farm buildings and industrial buildings

Hi Toni,

have you ever thought about starting a Kickstarter campaign (or any other crowd-funding) to be able to pay some software people form India, Vietnam, China (can be continued) to create this as a product for the whole world?

I mean: If you see wwhat Blacky has done in just a couple of weeks (superb work, Blacky!) you could imagine what a team of full-time-software-developers could do for your project. Objects for the world could be done in a short time.

And one more thought: Have you ever thought about bringing this product to FSX and/or P3D 2.x?

I did actually think about it earlier on, but I didn't think there would be enough interest in X-Plane for such a kickstarter to work. Also, if people put money forward for the project, then they won't really get anything back from it, as the program should remain free (Well, they get the program at least). I'm not the most organised of people, and I'm happy people like Blacky just work away on models without needing continual guidance or organising. Of course, if someone wants to work with me to start of a kickstarter/crowd-funding, then I'd be more than happy for the help and advice.

If I'm honest, I'm a little disappointed with the state of the project outside of Europe and was expecting/hoping more people to join in here. We have no problem in Europe, but nobody in the US or anywhere else wants to help out (even by just providing one or two photographs of a house), and this is a major problem for the project, which is currently the most popular in Germany. Also, it's worth noting that the actual availability of data also plays a major role in this.

For FSX, no, but for P3D yes. The problem is memory usage. As soon as P3D 2 becomes 64-bit, then I may well have a go. I have the developer subscription to P3D and I'm playing round with it, and it's more than capable of doing the same as X-Plane with photoscenery and objects, it's just the memory limit is far too restrictive at the moment.

Tony do you have P3d ? how is it ? are the flight dynamics better than XPX ? how about the visuals ?

Somehow at certain places like Nuremberg I do not like the way HDR looks.

To make a commercial product there would be a lot of legal issues to deal with, regarding data and all, wouldn't there be?

tonywob I'm in the USA, if you need pictures of homes its quite easy to get from realtor sites, I can provide some, this may be of help to you.

You can put in any city in the search field. I hope this helps. There's a lot of house buying sites in the USA, but that's one of them.

Well I am sure that there are some legal points Tony would need to deal with but that's what I do all day long so I can say for sure: that's nothing to worry about if you do it right... But: Yes, things need to be planed right from the beginning so that you don't run into serious trouble at the end of the production!

... talking about legal trouble ... If you want to use photos fro any Website you should get the permission of the holder of the copy rigths in writing (even if its still Freeware)!

I am, however, sure that there are a lot of freepictures in the usual places (photo sites like Picasa, etc) where you can download and use photos.

You're right, OSM data generally isn't good enough for the US, so it would mainly be autogen, but since the autogen is actually pretty good in the US already, I'm guessing most people just lack incentive to do it. Regarding pictures, basically anything you would consider "common" in your area, e.g. It could be a house, a supermarket, a chain of fast food restaurants. There is no hard rule on what to model and photograph. Once we've added the photographs to the library, someone can then model the buildings, whether it will be me or someone else.

No, you can actually use OSM data as long as you state you have done so. Many companies do this, including ORBX and OpenVFR. However World2XPlane isn't a commercial product, and I believe it should remain free, as should OSM.

If I'm honest, not much different than FSX as I remember it. It seems darker and gloomier than X-Plane, and also heavier on my computer. I have only installed some of my ORBX regions, and haven't bothered with photoscenery etc. Flight dynamics, I prefer the X-Plane ones. I have many planes/helis which I have on both platforms, and the X-Plane ones always feel better, but I do miss things like the A2A C172.

I'm sure there are, but that's something I honestly don't have the time or incentive to do, especially in a country I don't fly in and that is already well-loved by LR. If someone gives me a photo of a house, and tells me its dimensions, I'll try and model it, but we really need someone to take charge of doing this.

tonywob, how many different houses or buildings would you need? And if so, how detailed do the pics need to be, and is there a certain way that you need them taken as in a frontal shot, quarter, rear, etc? May be hard to do rear especially if you don't own the property or live there, then only a front shot of the house will have to do.

v0.5.0 Update

It's been a slow month, but work continues slowly on v0.5.0. Unfortunately, I've been quite busy with real-life work, but making slow but steady progress:

1) New farm buildings, as shown below. Both myself and Blacky have added some farm buildings, so rural areas look "more rural". I've also tweaked a few things, so that, for example, a tractor is placed in parking areas on farmyards to add a bit of life to the scenery.

Alabeo_C172_RG_2.jpg

Alabeo_C172_RG_3.jpg

2) I've created some more regional artwork for the UK, so less red-roofed Eastern European buildings, and more darker-roofed UK styled buildings.

Alabeo_C172_RG_4.jpg

3) Blacky has created a new facade set shown below for industrial areas. These looks more industrial than the bright blue buildings from the OSM2XP set, and also have nicer looking roofs. A German user Tom has also submitted some great and efficient models for industrial tanks and water towers plotted around the scenery

Alabeo_C172_RG_6.jpg

4) I've done some work on the code used to generate hedgerows around fields. I'm working on giving it more variety and a more natural/random look. There is still some work to do here, but scenery looks better now and performs a little better to.

The pictures really don't need to be highly detailed, just enough to capture the basic look of the building. They should be taken face on and as straight as possible (i.e. Not angled), and in even light (better when cloudy) and at at least 2 sides. You don't need the back of the house, just the front and one of the sides, but we can also work with just the front of the house if needed.  You can get an idea of what we need by going to this site https://github.com/tonywob/world-models/blob/master/houses/EU/GB/uk_terrace_two.png and having a look at the UK texture I did when I was last in the UK.

Regarding how many different houses and buildings, well how long is a piece of string?. We need all we can get, the more the better. If you're doing the US, then it would nice to have buildings specific to the various states, so the scenery will gradually change as you fly from one state to the next as it currently does in Europe. If you are going to concentrate on your home town/street then it's best to first add the buildings into OSM, and then you can measure them and tell me the measurements so I can produce the correct sizes, and then the house will very likely appear in its real place
