Weather Radar IS Possible!

Recommended Posts

At least this is what Aerosoft has discovered. For years many developers have said (almost authoritatively) that a working weather radar would be impossible within FSX. Well, it seems like Aerosoft has figured out a way to make it happen. There is a very interesting topic on their forum

nothing really new, maddog and the q400 have decent wx radars in the vc.  2d pop up wx gauge is a buzzkill for vc flying.

here, landing in a tstorm with lightning up front.

mmmm,... doesnt ASN do this right now and can be added to any aircraft via a 2d panel thanks to the direct cloud placement they use.

This system isn't tied to a specific weather engine though.

There is no way to implement the ASN system in the aircrafts ND in VCs?

Yes

Got a link to say that's not possible or are you asking the question?

We are talking about a different level to the ones you have seen in the Q400.

You can buy one from RXP that gives pretty pictures. Or even CS

@Jose

I see no reason why someone like PMDG could not fit it in. But it's a lot of work for them and all the WX controls would then have to be tied in.

Well, things have changed, but still would be some limitations. This is my post on Aerosoft forum:

Hi Tom,

your linked post contains some inaccuracies (the information about how ASN works). You're welcomed to give our trial a go in order to see in action how ASN behaves in relation to CBs, radar depiction, cloud tops, hail simulation, cloud turbulence, t-storm related drafts, precip localization etc. Or watch the various videos demonstrating ASN achieving now what you consider impossible.

Thanks!

Do a fully accurate weather radar with nothing but the default FS weather load, then I'll believe it's possible. No one's done that at all without hacking into the base sim and even the one company I know of that did... their weather radar still had inaccuracies.

Interestingly enough, Aerosoft says everyone thought it impossible and were wrong. I think I'll clarify that I'll bet it's still impossible without hacking the base sim. Microsoft provided almost zero data with regards to weather and what promising information they did provide, has been found to not work at all.

Hi Ed,

I agree with you in general. it depends on the depth of simulation you want to achieve and the definition of "accurate weather radar". If you want to simulate all features included in modern on board radar equipments (like setting tilt values, multiscanning, predictive windshear systems, turbulence etc), then no it's not possible. At least without the help of a weather engine behaving as an intermediate layer between fsx and the aircraft itself. This is the case with the way fsx is coded. The weather radar is tightly coupled to the weather itself (and this is the way it should be, if we want to elevate realism to a level where it actually makes sense for the simmer to use it).

ASN already provides all this and actually exposes API functionality for aircraft (or other) developers to take advantage of this (and this is already in progress by some of them, e.g. look at this). And yes this required low level code techniques to achieve ("hacking" to use your words) and months of work to reach to this level.
