June 6, 201411 yr I few minutes ago I posted a remembrance and a thank you to the soldiers who came to save us in June 1944 and despite my request to the mods it has been moved to hangar chat, a forum that I never visit. You guys are shooting very fast. A pity you were not part of the invasion forces on June 6, 1944 Thank you Jean-Jacques Struyf Jean-Jacques Struyf between EBBR and EBCI

June 6, 201411 yr I appreciate your gratitude. My dad was one of the many that landed on the shores of Normandy and fought his way through your country. Let us never forget their sacrifice and the sacrifice of the partisans who supported them.
June 6, 201411 yr Author When the allied forces liberated our city, I remember running along tanks and trucks picking up chewing gum tablets and cans of condensed milk. At one time, someone helped me to climb upon a tank. I was in heaven ;-) Jean-Jacques Jean-Jacques Struyf between EBBR and EBCI

June 6, 201411 yr Author Wow, what a fantastic memory to cherish! That really is special... Howard, fortunately my memories are those of a young kid who did not withness the horror of war. The only two events that struck me were first, seeing a few Gestapo individuals beating a man on our street while shouting loud (with the consequence that to me, german still sounds like a horrifying language) and secondly a V1 vehicle, aimed at London, that had lost it's track and exploded on a house about 100 meters from our own house. But somehow my brain erased that event from my memories and the only thing left is that every sudden noise still makes me jump in the air ;-) Jean-Jacques Struyf between EBBR and EBCI
June 6, 201411 yr My grandfather flew 35 missions in a B-17 during WWII as a navigator. He was in the Bloody 100th (square D) out of Thorpe Abbotts and helped soften up enemy positions on that fateful day. He's 91 now and I had breakfast with him this morning. June 6, 201411 yr My grandparents who resided in a small town in Languedoc-Roussillon, France, were forced to give up half of their home to German soldiers who were running communication operations. Then at some point later they apparently fled hours north into the deep countryside, where other family members resided. Must have been scary times. June 6, 201411 yr Commercial Member My grandfather flew 35 missions in a B-17 during WWII as a navigator. My grandfather flew as a tailgunner in a Lancaster with the RCAF. He never once talked about his experiences during the war, wouldn't speak of it at all. Jim Stewart Milviz Person.
June 6, 201411 yr Dear Jean-Jacques Struyf, With Respect this is not the forum you should be talking to at this point in time, we all know what happened, and we feel deeply for the lives that were lost in that conflict..... With regards Brian. Oh, I am 70 years of age so I know..........respect.........

June 6, 201411 yr Author I see you live very close to the location of another episode of the horrors of war. 200th anniversary next year... Yes Paul, Braine-L'Alleud, is one of the villages (a small city now) where the battle took place, together with Plancenoit and Lasne. The monument "The Lion's Mound" lies on the territory of Braine-L'Alleud. There were no fights on the territory of Waterloo, but Wellington had his headquarters in Waterloo (now a museum) where he signed the victory bulletin that was sent to London where the newspapers subsequently printed their headlines something like "Wellington wins at Waterloo". That is why we all talk about the battle of Waterloo. Every year, on June 16 to 18 lots of fan groups of the battle re-enact those 3 days that culminated in the big battle on the 18. And they are all preparing for next year's big show. Last year I read a very interesting book explaining all the (voluntary) mistakes that were incorporated into the school books relating the detailed events of the battle over those three days.
