Telling them that they should look at MS Flight or FSX on steam is plain wrong.

So is directing them to another sim that you listed.

Jim has a fair point. When I was new to aviation and flight simulation, I would have loved having something like Flight that taught you the basics without overloading you. FSX or X-Plane may easily turn someone off who's looking at getting into the hobby if they don't know a whole lot about aircraft in general.

Not just that; many of the people here are "lifers" people who have practically grown with the current sim ecology, and rarely seem to comprehend what a confusing morass of config tweaks, competing products of variable quality, endless searches for updates, and all the things that people here barely think about, but which creates a dauntingly high barrier for new converts.

The convenience of steam: auto installation and auto updates of purchased products, the possibility of essentially one-click re-installation, the convenience (possibly) of a centralized store, portability to different machines, and a host of other things will be much more attractive than the current severely fractured market.

It offers the promise of sanity.

My point is that P3DV2 and XPX are currently where it is at and that anyone new to FS unless they are specifying some niche interest should be directed to to P3DV2 and/or XPX.

I agree. Both LM and LR have taken risks  in order to produce two top notch products. People should think about that carefully before suggesting other options which only serve to de-standardize the flight sim "industry". I think it's fine for people to tinker with Flight to make it look like a "nice" version of a real sim. I certainly like to see innovation and that's why I have been experimenting with Outerra.

But really? Flight? Or trying to prop up a 7+ year old sim like FSX by selling it on Steam? Those are steps backward.

You are joking right?

Flight is what got me going. Not from Steam but right from MS.

Has LM really done anything more with ESP (BTW a 7+ year old MSFS engine) than to add eyecandy?  Does not MS Flight actually have the most recent MSFS engine?  Given this situation would not one want the latest and greatest?  AFAIK, LM has even stated they will do nothing to improve the FS engine; their stance is that it is up to 3PDs to provide such enhancements, such as A2A's accusim (which FSX is able to exploit as well...nothing new here).  All DTG has to do is to turn Flight into the sim its dev team originally envisioned and P3D will be the one left behind.  If DTG were to pull this off and add volumetric fog and enhanced ground shadowing, P3D will be completely left in the dust.  But will this happen... :Waiting: :Praying:

Its what Dovetail currently offers with their transim, and its what Steam is all about. Do you believe that DTG made the deal with Flight1 (and whoever else they might be talking too) just for fun?

I agree on all the points regarding P3D. MS Flight.... Mmmmm, so we got an 'arcade' type game & shoe-horning FSX scenery & some planes into it? Somehow that just not make sense to me. The same reasons as Avidean has mentioned, but a valient effort for the guy doing the mods.

So we want to encourage more guys to join us simmers by recommending a free sim, that was very limited in functionallity, that came out with 1x plane & 1x scenery (more could be bought), that is being modified to become acceptable to.. dare I say it ... gamers,& we are still not sure it it will be released on Steam, at a price/free? or we recommending FSX?

Does not make sense to me.

Condor is a another story. I tried to install on my Windows 8.1 2gb laptop & it bombed, so I'm going to try on my Windows 7 4gb laptop. After experiencing real gliding & the limitations of the sims we have, I really think that Condor, for gliding, is going to be a worthwhile contender.

I'm confused here, Eye candy only?? Have you ever looked at the Prepar3D forums whenever an update is released, about 7-8 now, to see how much has been updated from the original ESP (FSX's profesional version that LM is licensed for)?

You should be aware that there are pages & pages of updates? In any case, eyecandy is & can be added to any sim via addons. (Except FLIGHT, of course)

You say that LM stated that they will do nothing to improve the FS engine???? HUH? How come they on V2.4 now?

Still nothing anywhere saying that DTG (Dovetail) is gonna work on Flight's engine as their new sim.

So, a game/sim downloaded from Steam, renowned for gaming software, or from LM, an updated simulator, sold 'Not for Entertainment' ... Please guys, no debating on the licensing agreements there. Thats been done to death already!.

P3D left in the dust? You ARE aware that P3D, with the necessary hardware, IS licenced as a training tool?

have a look at their site...but supported by..

Redbird Training Devices (complete cockpits)

as well as'..

Ryan Aerospace Australia National Flight Academy FasTrac PRO-SERIES Simulators

So, LM has done nothing??

You want to play a game, downloaded from a gaming distributor, marketed by a TRAIN company (originally) with 1x plane & 1x scenery, that has been taken forgranted, remember we do not have confirmed info that this involes FLIGHT, &  that this is what is going to be released sometime(?) in 2015,

You want to play FSX: Steam ( 7 years old), no different from the original, apart from being released in a downloadable format from a gaming distributor.

Or P3D?

Spot on Rod.

People approach Flight simming for many reasons (something Microsoft recognized from the beginning), and not everyone is looking for a "professional training simulator". In fact, I believe its the assumption that everyone is on the same page that's left a large potential user-base sitting on the sidelines, waiting for a more inclusive experience. The fact is, that DTG took a largely moribund niche market, and despite very long odds managed to make it both mainstream and profitable.

Now they are threatening (against the same push-back and long odds) to do it again with yet another niche-market.

Just as with trainsim, they seem willing to face the doubts and long odds to do so, and more power to them. This particular niche needs some fresh air.

I have to agree with that. Whilst I am sure that getting all of that stuff into MS Flight is a significant technical achievement, those graphics don't look any better than FS2004.

Agreed! I use FS2004 and my graphics of Paris are much more superior.
