Active Sky Next - Recommended Settings

Featured Replies

I'm sure we're all enjoying the new WX radar on the PMDG777, however, I wondered if PMDG or any of the BETA testers can give us an insight into the recommended settings for ASN to better suit the WX radar.

I'm also having issues with cloud popping and disapearing returns, but that's already being looked at by HiFi. But maybe some input here may alleviate some of the problems I am having.

My most important settings are the graphics settings inside FSX:

I've just increased my graphics settings to "really high" and now I get heaps of pink areas even with medium gain setting in TSRA - check your graphics settings/active graphics profile, folks!

What graphic settings are you referring to? From my knowledge and from what others say, the settings within ASN override the cloud "settings" within FSX. I haven't got the Turbulence mode turned on either, which is recommended by PMDG and HiFi.

I fly with the defaults except for 2 settings - I lower the max high altitude visibility to the same as my cloud distance setting in FSX (90nm) - this helps with cloud pop in and all of that, and I turn the turbulence level down to 50%, it helps the AP maintain control better. (mentioned in the SP1 Supplement in the manual)

Will the weather radar in the -200 work without ASN (i.e. just the default FSX weather)?

Sadly not. It's because of the limitations of the FSX weather engine that PMDG haven't done a weather radar before. The reason we have one is because the genies over at HiFi figured a way around these limitations.

I'm aware of ASN overriding some FSX settings; I'm aware of wx radar depicting rain, not clouds; I'm aware of possible weak returns resulting in no or little depiction, but ...

I had the same findings with Bryn's freeware ASN wx radar gauge before: If I increase my graphics settings, Bryn's gauge starts to depict ASN weather for me. The same findings now for ASN weather in the T7.

When I'm home tonight I'll check those two graphics profiles specifically, with the depiction "treshold" between them. It's probably not the autogen slider that makes the difference ...

EDIT:

Could be "detailed clouds" according to this post:

ASN is great but heavy on my system.

I found that limiting cloud layers to "2" is really good move to release some extra frames.

Default "5" layers are to heavy.

This is one and the biggest parameter to change in case ASN is "heavy" for ur computer.

I could swear that no matter what you set your FSX cloud draw distance to, ASN will override that based on what it thinks your machine can display during that phase of flight.  I've got lowest in ASN set to something like 50 or 60 and the highest set to 90 or 100 and I remember going in to the WX setup in FSX and seeing this value fluctuate.  Very neat.

You still havnt  got the gauge installed in your  t7 panel  cfg  have you?

Also, if you have ASN installed including Demo, Opus weather will work with the WX mode in the T7. I think the other weather addons should to, as long as you have ASN installed. I use ASN, but handy to know for others who don't.

Hi Julian, what do you mean by: "including the demo"?

While things may work slightly, regarding getting some radar returns, this is not an intended operation and has several issues.  For proper 777 Radar you will need to use ASN for your weather.

I found in ASN that my clouds were appearing/disappearing very quickly since SP1 not getting the smooth transition between different cloud types.

Checked on the ASN forums and apparently having the Auto flight plan load checked within ASN causes this. They say that when you update the flight plan within the sim for example the ALTNS download data link new weather is automatically drawn.

I've now turned that off and just load my flight plan manually into ASN.
