Pilot's Global Mesh 2010 FSX edition review...for FSX/P3D

I did do a quick flight thru the valley in that area and it was amazing ... especially with Orbx OpenLC EU. (will post video of that later)

I'll be looking out for that for that video. Thanks

I just took my first post-mesh install flight out of Hawaii...and man oh man...but does Pilot's FSG2010FSX do a number on the island chain.  A total transformation. I was also worried that if you have an ORBX fat region....that their in-region custom mesh would conflict, or compete with Pilot's...so I turned it off. I then turned in back on in the San Fran Bay area...and to my mind...it looks even better with N.A. check-marked, regardless that you are flying in a fat region.

So...I'll just leave it on...

Your right, I've never seen any conflict worth investigating with FSGlobal on in any Orbx Full Fat region I'm flying.

Your suggestion in an earlier post to untick FSGlobal regional entries in the scenery library if not flying them sped my initial flight load up time by almost 3 minutes with the Ultimates, even with an SSD. Neat.

And because you can change FSGlobal regions on the fly its easy to adjust for say a trans-atlantic flight but probably no big deal to have both regions on from the get go.

Mitch,

I downloaded all the files for Global FSX MESH and I had to get Internet Download Manager to do it successfully.  However, all the files are Z01, Z02, Z03, Z04, and Z05.

I can't open them.  What's the trick to opening this type of file?  Is there a specific technique for combining them, or should I re-download them a different way?

I was hoping they would be WinZip files.  I would appreciate your advice or the advice of someone else who has faced this.  I've searched Google for a way to do this, but there doesn't seem to be anything definitive that I can latch onto.

As I dont have this - isint there 6 files - also make sure all of these files are in one folder and launch the installer which should be there with them in the same folder - (all must be in the same folder)

Thanks, Rich.

I'll make sure I do this.  The Z files are something that I don't remember encountering before.  The Flight Sim Store is down right now for Server maintenance.  I will check to see that I have everything necessary.

Stan only the FIRST one you downloaded is in fact the zip file...the rest z01, z02, etc, are CONTAINER files.  Put all of the six files into a folder on your Desktop. Then you open the first one...and ask Winzip to unzip. It will also look automatically into the other five sub files and you will end up with the wrapper.exe. and the installer.  Then..use the wrapper just as you do any ORBX product..and it will start creating and installing your mesh files onto your chosen ROOT drive.  So...only try to open the first one...that does NOT contain a number as the file type. That is the actual zip file. They could have been a heck of a lot more clear about what you need to do, to unzip the program installer. I tried to unzip the other ones as well...and thought they were corrupted.  Not the case....

Thanks, Mitch.   I'm starting to get it now.  Seems simple, but you're right.  The clarity of how to exactly do this escaped me.

Maybe a bit off topic, but taking advantage of 35% discount I took 76m Global mesh from FSGenesis, and to be honest I do not see any significant difference.

I was checking Salzburg and Athens area before and after FSGenesis, hard to see difference.

I can't grab out of memory, what all the Meter and LOD goodies are, in Pilot's FSG2010FSX edition, but there is pretty substantiate stuff that it contains.  The difference was seen right away by me...hence I had no trouble calling myself, publicly (LOL), a DUMMY in the P3D General Discussions forum (smile), for not having ever brought this element of customization to either FSX for all those years, or P3D. I did have a few mesh items for FS9 along the way...but not as a world-wide package.  The difference between standard FSX and P3D elevation data for the State of Hawaii, and Pilot's FSG2010FSX was absolutely so night and day, that even a blind man would say; "whoa...!".   As a matter of fact, every familiar place I fly, that has elevation, is being revisited by myself, one after another, to take in the difference and enjoy what my purchase has brought to the mix.  So...I can only confirm to you my subject header, and not other Mesh product beside this one. This will be the only one probably, as I don't need to go beyond the LOD elements already in play. I have seen the difference between Pilot's Ultimate and what I have installed, and for the visual difference, a pocket here, a slightly deeper crag there, vs the expense beyond my package, I shall be satisfied with what I have for quite some time.  I'm just kicking myself yet again, that for a guy that demands 'as real as it gets'...what the heck was I doing in NOT ever considering the only other element, that I had not been like a blood-hound on....and on my part...(KICK in the back-side!) what a dutz...for that!!!  It has been corrected, so I'm free to leave the Dutz Doghouse...... If I remember right; FSX world default mesh is 90m, US is 38m & Europe/Canada/Mexico default is 76m. So depending on the mesh products resolutions in those areas; you may or may not see much of a difference.

I have done my own mesh for Vancouver Island/Sunshine Coast using 0.75 arc seconds (approximately 20m) data; the difference between my 20m mesh and 76m default mesh is very obvious!

I agree with you, Stan.  I had not seen container files (sub-files) for a zip in a long time.  They could have just made 6 actual zips...that would have easily been opened...and have you merely place all their contents into one Desktop folder...to start the installation.  There is no mention that only one of them was the true zip file...and that THAT one can only be opened to extract the contents of the other 5 required downloads, automatically, once the zip extract starts. There...I just gave the explanation that SHOULD be on the download page.....it would have saved me, you, and who knows how many others from confusion...and downloading multiple copies of the last five...because they could not 'open' them...hence..thinking them a corrupt download attempt.  Not everyone is savy to every ZIP option of the menu.  Now..I will be aware of sub-folders, etc.  Before, I was not.....  I wasted many GB's of my monthly download allotment, to re-download those five numbered files....all the while, thinking they were downloading to my hard drive in a corrupt manner. Of course they were not...and for that I was most annoyed.  More clear and explanative  instructions on how to 'open' up the files, would have prevented that....

Just wanted to showcase how, from even 15 miles out, how much the peaks of the mountains on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, can be clearly seen with FSG2010FSX edition. I am heading towards the island, and just entering shallow waters as can be seen.  What a blast....and with the new mountain vistas..makes touring by boat in the 'Carib' so much more immersive and enjoyable!

In this shot, I am of course closer to the coast...and you can see a definite rise of the land right off of the shoreline, and then a gentle ascent to the mountains in the background. Before adding the mesh, this shoreline was almost flat where it joined and abridged the seashore.  What adding custom mesh has done to the FSX world, is dramatic, to say the least.  Immersion factor...is way up there...

Final shot of the coast....here, you can see dramatically how elevations are swept, leading up to the mountains behind. This again, was very ill-defined when I frequented this island on prior pre-install mesh boat tours...

Happy flying, or boating!

Captain Ses

Question.

Pilot's FSG2010

Runways that have higher elevation .. now on a plateau e.g. ... will the runways altitude (baro) be correct for takeoff and landing ... like for instrument autolands?

I assume the the runway / airport elevation would be as current as todays Navdata approach plates ... not older MSFS  airport elevation data.

Also, does their AFM product (airport flattening mesh) work in P3D as well as FS9 and FSX?

Best Regards,

Vaughan Martell  PP-ASEL KDTW

I will solve this....but I just want to VENT my frustration with the downloading and installing of FSGlobal.  I bought this Mesh program for over $85 and I've never been so upset about installing an expensive program.  I have all my Z0 files, my installation exe., and my Zip file.  At one point, I didn't know any better, and I tried to change my Z0 extensions to Zip files.  Well, that was not the thing to do.  I've downloaded Internet Download Managers and I couldn't get rid of my transformed Zip files.  Then I uninstalled Winzip so that I could have my Z files back.  THEN I find out that you need Winzip or RAR to make it work.

Anyway...it's been a real circus.  I've emailed Winzip and given them my Registration numbers so that they would send me a new download link so that I could get it back on my system.

Again....I believe the installation and SIZE of this download is so significant, that instructions for it should have been foremost.  I know that eventually I'll get it together, but I just had to write about this.  I've been downloading Flight sim stuff for over 16 years, and this has been one of the biggest challenges I've ever faced.  To compound it all, you really can't phone anyone for help.  You are always referred to FAQ's and forums.  Frustrating!
