January 15, 201511 yr Awesome shots, they make me want to try XP. I literally grew up on the airport in Kodiak. Beautiful place, would love to move back, but the wife grew up on the equator in central America, so I don't see any Alaska moves during this lifetime. Kerry W. January 20, 201511 yr Author Yeah ... I usually flew in Europe and only had heard/read about the fascination of bush flying (in Alaska or elsewhere), but didn't care much about it. Now, as I did the step to flying in Alaska, I have to say, it is a completely different (and exciting) experience compared to flying in urban areas. January 21, 201511 yr Author The weather has improved, thus there will be much more to see during this flight. Start in Yakutat. Again some clouds, but nothing an Alaksan bush pilot is intimidated by ... To the left, a mountain is protruding above the clouds. It's the Mount Fairweather. He is building the border between Alaska and British Columbia in Canada. As the mountains are quite high here, I had to climb from 8,000 to 13,000 ft. In the background the Mount Fairweather. Glaciers Meanwhile the mountains are lower, and I can descend again to 8,000 ft. Only a few miles to Juneau. Final approach Landed. Parked (1:25 h flight duration). January 21, 201511 yr Moderator Fantastic shots Uwe. The caravan is one of Carenado's best, and not bad scenery either ;-)
January 25, 201511 yr Author Thanks guys . Hey you should fly the Otter there Well .. I'm used to the Caravan now, but ... FYI - there is a Twin Otter in development. My sceneries (excerpt): LPMA Madeira (XPFR), LGSR Santorini, LRBV Brasov, the city of Fürth (Germany), several libraries, ...

January 27, 201511 yr Author great view, what is the flight planner that you use, shown in your pictures ??? Do you mean this one? That's not a flight planner, but the built in "local map" of X-Plane. There is an excellent freeware Otter too. I know . My sceneries (excerpt): LPMA Madeira (XPFR), LGSR Santorini, LRBV Brasov, the city of Fürth (Germany), several libraries, ...
March 1, 201511 yr Author Finally I found again some time for flying. For a start, I made a map with all my recent flights and the ones I plan still to do (subject to change <_<). Start was in Unalakleet (PAUN). Todays flight is from Juneau (PAJN) to Ketchikan (PAKT). I have to climb at a high rate because the hills around Juneau are ... quite high. Enroute There's a lot of water around in Alaska ... To the right PAKT is already in sight - everything ok ... ... until my ILS gauge stops working. Strangely my first thought was, whether the localizer at the airport stopped operation. Although not possible in reality -_- (unless you ask the tower), in X-Plane you can see if the NAVAIDs around you are working (or the instructor is mean and decides to test your skills). But here everything is ok. Only possibilty now - something in the plane went wrong. Indeed ... But fortunately the weather is good enough for a visual approach. Landed. The taxiway to the terminal goes downhill. Actually I planned to do a side trip to Stewart (CZST) today, but I am not sure whether they have a repair shop there which is able to repair my faulty equipment. Here in Ketchikan I am sure they can. Thus I have to delay my Stewart trip. Stay tuned ... My sceneries (excerpt): LPMA Madeira (XPFR), LGSR Santorini, LRBV Brasov, the city of Fürth (Germany), several libraries, ...
March 7, 201511 yr Author Okay ... the short hop to CZST (Stewart, at the border between Alaska and Canada) starts today. The weather is ugh! ... but well, we are in Alaska ... The cloud base is low ... and I have to fly low, too. Right through the middle of this fjord the border between Canada and Alaska is located. After around 30 mins of flight, approach to Stewart. For today flying is already finished, I plan to wander through Stewart. Leaving the airfield ... ... for lunch ... ... and staying overnight. Next day ... nice weather, and I decided not to wander around but make a low and slow sightseeing flight with the Firestar II. The South end of Stewart. The snow-covered peak is exactly the border to Alaska. The Northern end of Stewart - time to return. Base leg to rwy 36. End of a nice flight. The clouds are "sticking" to the hills.
