Flying wild Alaska

Recommended Posts

Start in Old Harbor (6R7) - in nice weather conditions.

cssr9sieig7l7wb8j.jpg

But the map already shows clouds - well, it's Alaska and not the Canaries ...

cssrao4sjvnfv006b.jpg

And here they are, the clouds

cssrb28m297tkycir.jpg

cssrbkbwxwth9xm8z.jpg

A lot of landscape here :o ...

cssrc6b9kpec37v1f.jpg

... but a nice one ...

cssrcpjoa3t5qbhlv.jpg

cssrdf3frouyfv6xv.jpg

The destination Kodiak (PADQ) almost in sight - behind the hill and "below" the left wheel.

cssrdopbd4qat8grn.jpg

There it is ...

cssrf2ksk4eap8u77.jpg

cssrfe6aai9ofwwkj.jpg

cssrfp6fg54sw58tf.jpg

Nice little airport

cssrg06bisxdjp80z.jpg

cssrgis45dpsx3x7n.jpg

Duration of the flight was about 25 mins.

I plan to do more flights in this region and hope to get weather like this (from ca. 1:45). If need be, I will create it myself.

Quite beautiful. X-Plane, FSX or P3D? I'm having difficulties telling them apart these days. Any scenery addons in place?

Thank you+

Sascha

I would say XP10 after only a slight glance.

Next flight ... from Unalakleet (PAUN) to ... let's wait and see B).

ctb6revdil4htaq0g.jpg

Successful start (no deer or other animal crossed the runway). Behind the estuary you can see the runway of PAUN

ctb6sqm7uzwyjoz74.jpg

Quite sunny weather, this way flying is big fun

ctb6tr96a8zcmetkg.jpg

ctb6ubziaoas0c7xs.jpg

Some clouds are crossing the way ...

ctb6uoqylamq739rk.jpg

... actually not clouds, but high fog. Some hills still stand out

ctb6vkn9nbr3bz3g0.jpg

ctb6wu2f66p1f8lrk.jpg

Descent to Holy Cross (PAHC) - not yet visible. It should be somewhere below the front wheel.

ctb6xn9d65d8h4r3k.jpg

That's the way of living in Alaska ... an airfield in front of your door ...

ctb6z1m3hxj2iikog.jpg

ctb700a532qatssa8.jpg

Turn-over at the (almost) end of the runway

ctb70fmmk8do849ww.jpg

Very short taxiway and you're already on the apron

ctb7165fp2n4gnghc.jpg

Holy Cross. How many people do live here? Not many: 227 (census 2000). Although the landscape is some kind of fascinating - I wouldn't like to live here ... especially in winter. Dark all the time AND cold.

ctb72iei38m7jwy0g.jpg

Flight time was 45 minutes.

Era Alaska service continues ... After an overnight stay the weather improved, and I'm flying from Holy Cross to Port Lions on Kodiak Island.

ctc5f2gw205yer774.jpg

Start on rwy 19

ctc5gipeed1mdgenk.jpg

The Yukon river - quite impressive

ctc5hdhedeklt15io.jpg

In the foreground some hills, at the horizon the snow-covered mountains of Wood-Tikchik State Park

ctc5jct80j6mkiwxc.jpg

A friendly gaze towards the photographer

ctc5l2lp3xznyypf4.jpg

The Iliamna Lake

ctc5lslf9jqpfg2eo.jpg

ctc5meinesoueyr00.jpg

Some rest of snow on the hills

ctc5nyavdgkzf312o.jpg

Even more snow - actually: ice. It is the Hallo glacier. This is really its name because the nearby bay is called ... Hallo Bay

ctc5oeikp6r82rnsg.jpg

We leave the Alaskan mainland ...

ctc5uzivfnk9srxo0.jpg

... towards Kodiak Island

ctc5vpy60drevduls.jpg

Lots of wood here ...

ctc5w918wa8z8yuk0.jpg

Left in front of the cowling we see some streets of Port Lions

ctc5wr3bdltuop4j4.jpg

Downwind

ctc5y4cnmpf2fr700.jpg

ctc5yeg7ry2rzwrow.jpg

How should I land there??? No straight approach, short runway ...

ctc5yprovxwign29c.jpg

ctc5zd3ox9kmkbd4g.jpg

But with the appropriate routine no big problem. Anyway ... In Alaska you don't need big terminal buildings for passenger handling, a container is sufficient.

ctc5zpoobpmsczbxs.jpg

To the left the landing stage for boats and above the little village Port Lions. I have no idea why they called it Port Lions - in Alaska? Population is 256 (census 2000).

Great shots Uwe, I especially like the reflections in the water

It also looks like nearby Canada has been getting large amounts of data imported into OSM recently, so shortly we should be able to generate nice and accurate scenery for it (As well as HD Mesh v3, *drool*)

ctoaaov705cefrwa8.jpg

To the left you can see a small grey strip - this is Larsen Bay

ctoab98551p3bx5ww.jpg

ctoabworevt12f67k.jpg

The freight I have to transport has not yet arrived, and I have to park the plane ...

ctoac8j1kbljvg75c.jpg

... good opportunity to walk around for sightseeing

ctoacziqfgg78jb5c.jpg

ctoadh9gsxjh9tvsg.jpg

ctoads0cslny57xo0.jpg

After around 1h of waiting, I am starting again direction Northeast

ctoae52mz34cuknqo.jpg

The Alaskan mainland - down to the left the city of ... not Simpson, but Homer

ctoafdmyhgof6oeuo.jpg

The Kenai River

ctoagkyd00qqbwe9c.jpg

The destination in sight - Fire Island

ctoah4ul4s135fn00.jpg

ctoahityekfqnebzk.jpg

To the right: PANC (Anchorage) ...

ctoahtfk6ep9ys5yo.jpg

... and at the same time to the left Fire Island airstrip

ctoai99dmvrnuo6y8.jpg

Approach ...

ctoajq5olcvvej6sw.jpg

ctoak1u1ewlp8rygg.jpg

Turning right for parking

ctoakl8avgh06hgds.jpg

After around 2 hours flight time for both legs - finished for today. Has anyone good tips for some bars in Anchorage? :drinks:
