Dell Ultrasharp U3415W 34" Curved Monitor

Featured Replies

Surely my GTX 670 must be ok with a 29" IPS 2560x1080 monitor. If there's a chance of losing substantial performance then I will stick with my 24" Dell from 2008. Still going strong even though a tad on the small side by todays offerings.

I doubt you'd experience any significant performance loss at that resolution. Just wondering- have you tried FSX on the 50" tv or does the resolution not scale well at that screen size?

I only use REX 4 for my weather, no engine, but with all the highest resolution textures,

With my old Dell 30" monitor, the high settings in REX4 brought my system to its knees (I use ASN and never bought the REX Weather Architect program just recently released by REX).  REX does not a weather engine but, in General Settings, you can indicate the location of your weather engine.  I use REX4 textures as I think they are awesome but in Texture resolution, I have the following settings:

Low-level clouds - 2048

High/mid-level clouds - 2048

(I have not installed Runways or Taxiways textures, just the clouds and the water)

Under Texture Compression I have the following settings:

low level clouds - DXT5

High mid-level clouds - DXT5

If you put these two settings to the 32 bit compression, you will suffer fps dramatically depending on your other fsx settings.  I had my LOD_Radius at 6.5 which is above the default 4.5 and Texture_Max_Load at 4096.  I have since moved the TML to 2048.

I do not see the performance degradation with having a 34 inch monitor.  I do not see how that could happen.  If it does cause a degradation of performance, then you can easily change the resolution of a 24 or 30 or 29 inch monitor.  Anyone having problems with performance should make sure your frame limiter is not set to unlimited.  Put it at 25 or 30.  These fps are more than what's need to run fsx smoothly.

No I haven't tried it. The TV runs my gaming PC and games consoles fine at 1920*1080. The TV is in front of a 2 seat sofa in my computer room and my FS rig on the other side. I'm keeping my FS and gaming rigs separate and am prepared to pay for a monitor that cost more than my TV as an investment especially with P3D 3.0 on the horizon.

Question, this 34 inch Dell we're currently discussing does not have a DVI port?  As I understand, DVI is better for gaming than HDMI.  Does anyone have any comments on that?  Thanks.

I run my simulator (P3D) from a gaming laptop with GTX 860m Nvidia Card. Have great performance with my Asus 25 inch screen (1920*1080). Would my card support this Dell screen?

Maybe you should be looking for a DP port as that's the latest and I think the best.

The monitor uses HDMI 2.0 which is the best for 4K monitors (this is not a 4K monitor but has the resolution).  Here's a spiel from CNET regarding HDMI 2.0 - http://www.cnet.com/news/hdmi-2-0-what-you-need-to-know/

I would say you should have no problems if the card has an HDMI or DisplayPort connection.  The advertising for the monitor states:  "Connect your smartphone or tablet to your monitor using Mini DisplayPort, or use HDMI 2.0 to get the best of the Internet and your favorite apps by displaying in full 21:9 aspect ratio".  So a Laptop should work too.

EDIT:  I suspect they mean using one of the USB 3.0 ports for connecting your SmartPhone/Tablet.  Still, if you have the HDMI or DP connection it should work but I would consult an expert with monitors/video cards first.

I have Dell U3014 @ 2560 x 1600 and I am very satisfied with DP connection.

Jim,

Do you get a sense of motion in your peripheral with the curved screen....similar to what people get when using 3 monitors ?

Just to add to this thread that I purchased one today. Due to arrive tomorrow.

Got a really good price on it too , £635, compared to most of the big online retailers that I normally used.

Will show a few pics etc when setup for anyone that's interested. Going to connect to my GTX 670 first but may swap for my 970 depending on how it goes.

Mark - In my case, I wouldn't say there is any more sense of motion with it as I don't think it spans far enough into the peripheral for that to happen.  It is fantastic for a VC though as it does give you that extra immersion with the extended horizontal view.  The curve is not all that perceptible when you are centered on the screen. Now 2 of these side by side might give you that sense of motion!

Interesting.  I just wonder if a large 35 or 40" regular screen would be better.  I tend to have my view somewhat close to the instruments just so I can see them.  Also, is there any benefit to a 4K screen over a regular LCD when using FSX or P3D ?

Keeping the GTX 670 installed in the FS rig as, surprisingly, I have no frame rate hit at all. Remains between 26-30 whilst at the airport then at 30 in the air through dense clouds. Have gfx settings as per NickN's guide with SGSS set at x2.

If you can afford one then I recommend to purchase one. Will definitely enhance your sim experience and is a big upgrade from a 1920 x 1080 24in Dell. I'm sat 3ft away and the screen is just the right size for me,

(I saved a bit extra here and there in addition to my normal savings throughout the year so was fortunate enough to be able to purchase)

Thanks for the pics,  I am also thinking that adding 2 more 27" screens for a 3 screen surround setup might be an option.  Certainly an option that is about half the price.
