My version on how to get smooth and stutter free P3D 3.1

Recommended Posts

Un ticking 'Blackout Desktop' enables use of second monitor in full screen. ;-)

First, this is what works for me on a 4790k@4.6, GTX 780 with 6GB.

Type of flying, PMDG NG/777, Q400.

Addons always used.

ASN

TrackIR

EZCA

I always fly into and out of pay-ware airports.

ORBX=Global, Vector, OLC. Nothing else.

Lets Start with P3D Settings.

The only thing to note here is I now have water set to OFF(you might like it you might not? try it and see! If your flying over land you don't need anything else really!)

S5.jpg

Vector uses over 300mb of VAS and for the type of flying I do I only have the below turned ON and it saves VAS and stutters etc.

v1.jpg

v2.jpg

Now this is how I make P3D 3.1 run as smooth as can be from me.

There is a guy called Steve W ( Steve Waite) and if you want to know about Affinity masks then all you need to know is what he says.

With my CPU and with HT ON I now use AM 116 (AM is the only config tweak I use now)

Open Task Manager Ctrl+Alt+Delete Then press Task Manager

TaskManager.jpg

Have a look down the list for P3D, right click and click on "Set Affinity" and you will see this, this shows what cores P3D is going to use.

3.1P3D.jpg

One you have P3D running press Alt+Enter (not full screen) then open Task Manager.

As before scroll down and fine TrackIR, I want this as smooth as possible (30 FPS and no stutters)

As before, find it in the list but select "Set Priority" and set like this.

TrackIR.jpg

Then as above "Set Affinity" like this. Its now only using the cores NOT used by P3D

TrackIRAFF.jpg

Now set ASN and EZDC "Set Affinity" the same way, DONT change "Set Priority" leave as default "Normal"

ASN.jpg

EZCA.jpg

Now you have set everything to use the cores P3D does not use, leaving P3D in peace.

Am not saying this is best and it might not even work for you, but it sure does for me and hopefully the reasons why are easy to see.

Like always it's finding what works for you.

Enjoy!

I applied the setting's and made some changes to nVidia Inspector and to the P3D display settings and deleted the shader cache.  My scenery settings are bumped up a little with respect to scernery objects and special effects.  I noted much more smoothness but had to limit my FPS limit to ~30 as the swings were too wide when left at unlimited (from ~25-55 FPS).

I had only moments before leaving for work but I wanted to see for myself how your setup would work on my system.  I was experiencing the usual microstutters which appear while rebuilding the shader cache and I expect the next flight to be smooth.  I noted that my PC temps were a little higher, is this due to hyperthreading?

SimStarter.

This is a fantastic piece of sofwares and I believe a new version soon will also set the affinity mask of each program it starts in conjunction with the sim.

Yes, it will

Will have a Read, thanks Steve.

I have it blacked out because my 2nd screen is below my main, see below.

Also because of the view you see on the main screen this also help FPS. Its also far more a realistic view.

I am really p1ssed that Avsim has deleted the hardware profile...how the he11 can we do comparisons to settings when we don't have a clue what kind of equipment those settings are running on???

I have made a page on my forum that explains:

how to make a batch file (.bat) to start apps with affinity

Great Steve,

Do you have more expamples than F8 ?

I use 340 for Fs.

Thanks,

Gerard

340 is a good choice for the sim with 6 core (or more) HT=On (Enabled), and has many equal derivatives, we'll stick with 340:

340 = (00,01,01,01,01,00) binary, showing HT pairs comma delimited core zero on the right

one way to put a weather engine to an advantage:

3074=(11,00,00,00,00,10)=C02

Steve,

What Fx

and also what would this be?

My PC or the bits that count was on the first line of the Topic Chas.

The only other thing to note is W7 is on its own SSD and so is P3D. (550mb per second Read speed ones)

Thanks , will try that.

On my server ( 6 core ) I have running :

- P3Dv3

+

- Prosim 737

- Prosim MCP

- Prosim Panel

- Opencockpits SIOC

- Game Booster 3

- OpusFSI ( no weather, just Buttkicker support )

Is C02 then a good way to set the Affinmity ?

Thanks,

Gerard

ASN.jpg

AffinityMask:

P3D 116=(01,11,01,00)=74=2,4,5,6

ASN 139=(10,00,10,11)=8B=0,1,3,7

My recommendations:

P3D 116=(01,11,01,00)=74=2,4,5,6

ASN 194=(11,00,00,10)=C2=1,6,7

P3D 85=(01,01,01,01)=55=0,2,4,6

ASN 248=(11,11,10,00)=F8=3,4,5,6

These give more "width" to the JobScheduler and network i/o and provide ASN full core bandwidth when required.

Thanks , will try that.

all those extras can go on 3073=(11,00,00,00,00,01)=C01=0,10,11

so you can also run ASN on C02

P3D 116=(01,11,01,00)=74=2,4,5,6

ASN 194=(11,00,00,10)=C2=1,6,7

Look forward to trying this.

Can I ask why the ASN would not be better on core 0 and 1 as P3D are not using then. Why only 10 not 11 and then why share 6 ?

Thanks Steve.

Great info Steve.  So one can use either of these settings for P3D and ASN?  Very interesting information, I am so glad that this thread was started.  What a smart bunch you are!

Yes, they're for 4 core HT Enabled, and there are many alternatives that work more or less the same. These would work on any CPU with 4 or more cores, however, as I showed with Gerard, the 6 core and up can be treated entirely differently.

Round and round and round we go, next great setup here we go...  there was last years suggestions, this years... this weeks, next week...  next months,...   eventually something will become standard

or will it

not with this version of the application. That died with FSX and the Steam version. In P3D there is no such thing as: The right setup  or   the perfect setup and no one has any numbers, calculations or any outline that will work for the masses.

I'm afraid its a free for all.

Work it, play it out and realize there is no expert out there that has any information that follows any real engineering for specifics since the specifics change with every update and every addon in use, doesn't it?. The modified title has too many variables and every time they patch or rework it the variable's change again, not to mention the addon changes and user setups.

There is a difference between understanding the math and using it to define tests..   problem is no one showing the graphs is part of the engineering or coding team and they certainly do not have the addons we each have installed and are using nor do they fly the way everyone else does, do they?

What might work today based on logic and math, doesn't tomorrow after installing another scenery, texture, freeware, payware package or plane. The new and improved or 'modified' version of ESP is a complete variable in itself when it comes to hardware and addon installs.

Work it out for yourself and stop looking for the yellow brick road.

What works for you, probably wont for everyone else and what works for you today probably wont 3-6 months from now. How do I know?   Could be because folks seem to post its all under control and perfect in the past with some tweak, setting list or AM number.... all of all of a sudden a few months later, its all under control again with some new setup.

I am sorry but the flight sim world outside of the professionals need to get a grip, a serious grip unless of course they have nothing better to do. Sad but if that's the case please have fun beating your heads against a wall as observed from Mount Olympus for well over a decade

I just figure out what works for my set up, change as needed over time and then fly and enjoy it like I have since 2001

Redmond....  <still under NDA  >
