VR is the thing you want - Monitors is so last century

Recommended Posts

I always rely on a freeware software called AOMEI Backupper that will allow me to make complete backups and very easily revert should I want to meaning I will end up with what my system looked like before I did a or b. I wouldn't want to be without this application because like you say in our hobby you don't want to mess up a system that is working good...

However for FlyInside you will still be able to use P3D in 2D anytime you like simply by launching P3D rather than FlyInside (which will launch P3D automatically for you).

Also from what I've seen FlyInside will use it's own Prepar3D.cfg file called prepar3d_FlyInside.cfg found in the same location where you have your normal Prepar3D.cfg file. I guess that means it doesn't touch your original file. Part from that I think the only files affected by using FlyInisde are your shaders cache which you can very easily refresh simply by deleting them allowing them to be rebuilt.

These are the files I know FlyInside will touch but to make certain you could head over to the FlyInside forum and ask. Or even better use the software I'm using mentioned above (or any other software doing the same thing) to make a complete backup of your system before installing FlyInside. Doing this you don't need to worry about anything since you'll always be able to go back to the exact same state your system was in before you installed FlyInside.

Thanks for the detailed answer, Richard!

Hi guys,

i see lot of people enjoying VR in flight simulation. I wanted to give VR a chance so i rented a Oculus Rift. After 3 hours of installation mostly due to connection errors and the lack of installation documentation for the Xbox one wireless setup in Windows 7 i finally managed to get the Rift installed and working. Impressive demos.

Next thing i wanted to try P3D+Flyinside. Unfortunately i gave up on it after almost 1.5 hours and tons of crashs of P3D. Ok i had it sort of working. I managed to to assign buttons on my Warthog HOTAS but within the Rift the left lense showed me the left window of the VC and the right lense showed me the whole VC. I wasnt able to interact neither with the VC switches nor with Flyinside.

I already posted this behaviour over @ Flyinside. The response was very quick but after stating my PC and Sim specs im still waiting for an answer.

Anyway maybe her´s someone to shed some light in the magic VR setup. Here are my PC specs: i7 5820k oc´ed 4.5GHz ASUS Strix 1080 Advanced, 16 GB RAM. Flyinside v1.71 nVidia driver 376.09 P3D v.3.3 Latest Oculus Rift software.

So how can i solve these problems. P3D crashes when trying to assign buttons to the joystick and the distorted view in Oculus Rift?

Thanks in advance.

Very strange, especially the two lenses showing different views. Unfortunately I can't shed any light, as Flyinside worked immediately for me with no issues. I suspect the answer will probably have to come from the flyinside developer.

And wow, I never heard that you could rent an Oculus. Thats cool!

Are you sure you have the latest Oculus runtime? https://www3.oculus.com/en-us/setup/

Sorry to hear about your crashes.

One thing I would suggest is to make sure you're running FlyInside as admin. Not sure if this is mentioned somewhere but from my own experience running P3D (or FlyInside in this case) or any other application related to P3D as admin mostly is the best option.

Another thing is to make sure you don't have HDR enabled in P3D for instance when running FlyInside. If I recall correctly FlyInside will change this automatically for you during installation and first run but worth double-checking. Also scan through the rest of your settings to make sure they look good. In my case FlyInside changed a couple of things I decided to bring back to my own preferred values.

Lastly you could try the 'Reset FlyInside P3D Settings' option found in your programs menu in Windows in the FlyInside group.

As for the lenses not showing a correct VR image I've seen this myself a couple of times and in my case it has been caused by starting P3D from a saved flight where I'm not situated in the virtual cockpit but in external spot view. Restarting P3D and loading a situation/flight where I'm placed in the v/c has always solved this issue.

Great that you're able to rent a pair of Oculus glasses in Germany and certainly we'll do our best to help you have a good experience with your VR glasses during the time you have them in your possession

Hopefully some of the guys over in the FI forum will chime in soon too.

Hey, mates! After reading this topic i'm in the club now with Oculus CV1 and Flyinside for Prepar. And so excited so far! After some couple long haulers and short trips with PMDG 747 and 737 in VR i can not put myself back to 2D..

Could we share here our settings for Flyinside ini file? I think it could be useful for new adopters, as i've spent a day or so to get a more or less solid picture in my sim, searching for nice settings.

Welcome to the club Maks, glad to hear you like it so far

Not sure if it's that much of interest in the ini file. Most in there are standard I think except for what buttons you like to use as your interaction key etc. One thing though I can add as a tip is to add the below to the ini file. Doing this the simulator will no longer be paused when you enter the FlyInside menu which comes in handy when flying online for instance where you never want to pause your simulator.

[Options]
DisablePauseControl = 1

Another tip to make it easier to always know where your mouse cursor is in your VR space is to map the Reset Orientation and Center Mouse to the same button. Doing this it's very easy whenever you "lost" your mouse cursor to look straight forward and then pressing the key will both reset your orientation (eyepoint) as well as bring the mouse cursor right in front of you. I find this very convenient.

Then of course there are lots of other good tips as well if you head over to the FlyInside forum. However I have found their forum to be rather quiet but maybe if more and more of us start participating over there it will also become more alive.

Speaking about forums I think just as someone else already suggested maybe it's time for Avsim to create a VR subforum. I will send management a suggestion about this because the problem right now is lots of good information might be posted in some forum you don't normally visit although it would have been equally much of interest to you since it was about some VR specific stuff rather than the product/topic of the subforum where it was posted.

WebMaximus.

I agree, Avsim should have a forum for VB.

One of the problems we VR advocates have is a slight disinterest in VR by the community in general. I fly PMDG, and have for years. I posted on the PMDG site and saw no interest. I suspect many have not had the opportunity to experience VR so this is understandable.

When VR gear comes down in price and more available to the community I do believe a massive awakening will occur and the immersion factor will dominate.

OTOH a high def., TV/Monitor is not a cheap alternative either.

Of course as we all know Flyinside is a public Beta. Dan Church it's author is about as friendly and helpful as you will find as a developer. I honestly think that it would be in the best interest for high end Aircraft developers to do what ever it takes to make their aircraft more VR friendly.

Flyinside will soon release an update that is good for all platforms and fixes some issues with mouse and controls for complex aircraft including PMDG. The new round of video cards about to hit the market will be a plus also.

As we know, once you experience the Immersion in VR you never want to go back. I go back and forth but still find myself amazed in VR, cannot stay away!

Best

Have you guys seen some of the amazing videos out for VR - off course these are non-aviation!!  I mean they are truly amazing!!!  They take you there.

Also, Jaunt app has 3 or 4 awesome aviation videos.  I love the 2 aircraft carrier ones, I feel like I am in "Top Gun"
