I think the mesh in XP11 is of higher quality than the HD Mesh that's what i think Andras mentioned.

The best is to use W2XP Europe from Simheaven which is around 3GB of download.

Hm, well, just had a look at W2XP from SimHeaven but found it pretty confusing pretty soon already (with various versions not working together or specific files needed and I also don't understand the differences between Mesh HD and WX2p and) OSM sooooooo I will follow Murmur's advice and simply enjoy what I've got right now. I will check all those things out later!

Question 1: if I download Mesh HD for the Lugano area, will it use the new German houses....? Or does Mesh HD 'call' the old kind of houses?

Question 2: what does the Texture quality slider do exactly? Because when I change it (in the middle of a flight) I see no difference between Medium, High and Maximum. Is it for specific textures only maybe?

1) I think it should use the new autogen, someone other could confirm?

2) I think changing the texture resolution takes effect on restart. If I remember correctly, in X-Plane 10, having the texture resolution one notch below max would load max texture resolutions for everything (aircrafts, airports, etc.), except terrain (loaded at one notch below max). It could have changed in X-Plane 11 though.

I can confirm that the new autogen is showing with HD Mesh 3. Not sure about the texture setting, but I couldn't see a difference between having it at max or one step below.

Mesh is the elevation data like mountains, that is HD + UHD Mesh . W2XP contains data derived from Openstreetmap = OSM which contains real geo located objects like buildings / towers / powerlines / roads / forests etc....  So both are different.

But Andras Mesh has buildings / forests and other objects too , but W2XP does it different with buildings height / textures and so on

It will take you some time to understand what those libraries are, but to give you a quick idea they are something that even you can use to create your own scenery using Overlay Editor or even WED (this is Xplanes airport creation tool) .

No idea if this will help you or not, but I thought I would throw it out there.

I had a couple issues initially with my controls not working properly. I have 3 devices: a Saitek yoke and throttle quadrant, the guts of a logitec stick inside my Saitek yoke to fix the pitch and roll null zone issue, and the guts of a logitec stick inside my old rudder pedals.  Yes, I like to hack my controls :)  I first had to go through and set ALL unused axis to "NONE" and only set the ones I needed. Initially I had three 'pitch', three 'roll', etc.

Next, I had an issue with one of my toe brakes. It was not detecting the full range and was keeping the left brake on half way at all times. No matter how many times I calibrated or played with how far I moved the pedal during calibration it wouldn't sort itself out. My solution was to go into the preferences file, find the axis responsible, and manually set the low, mid, and high values for that axis. As long as I don't go back into the joystick settings (which seems to overwrite what I fixed, even when I don't calibrate) things work great.

Here is the file and the settings I used:

X-Plane 11\Output\preferences\X-Plane.prf

_joy_lo_raw_dat1 0.500000

_joy_center1 0.750000

_joy_hi_raw_dat1 1.000000

_joy_axis_is_calibrated_override1 1

Using the calibration in the sim, the low value was set around 0. There might just be something funky with the pot on my toe break as I've had to do some contortions in the past to get it to work properly (usually all in game though).

Note the last setting. If you leave the override as 0 the sim will nag you about having an uncalibrated joystick.

Obviously this is not ideal, but maybe it will spark an idea or help someone get flying. Good luck all!

Thank you V. I tried this trick after identifying my yoke in the X-Plane.prf file and it worked. I did a flight from CYVR to KSEA IFR with ATC and it was a really good experience. Hand flying a cessna in X-Plane for me feels different than in P3D and also much easier to trim. Did not used the autopilot at all. I like the graphics and how smooth it feels. Also I like how can you see the airports tower beacon from afar. All in all it is a really nice sim and I'm glad I picked it up.

Ok, new autogen, nice.

The texture settings seem to need a restart because I took screenshots and the three different settings look exactly the same. Restarting makes it a bit harder to test the performance difference but I will give it a try sometime.

Yes, I know Mesh from P3D but I though in XP it would ALWAYS contain more than just mesh. But I understand the extra's that Andres added to the Mesh can also be created and distributed separately, like W2XP does. I also got a bit confused because the site I found showed W2XP downloads separately from OSM downloads but I think that W2XP actually is OSM but just created with a specific utility... or something like that LOL

So... I could use Mesh HD (for better mountains) and still use W2XP on top of that for even better OSM detail...?

But well, in a few days I will be gone for over a week so I think for now I will just enjoy default XP. ;) I will dig deeper into the wonderful world of XP freeware when I return from my trip. ;) Hope you all don't get tired of all these newbie questions. ;)

The Mesh which Andras makes is very high details and stuff.  That mesh has everything burnt in.

There are two versions of OSM data currently available @simheaven , one i think is the one done with OSM2XP app (this is old and no longer in development and the other is with W2XP  newer and more detailed.

TBH the default stuff in XP11 looks very good at least for Europe so for now just fly with the default stuff till you are confident of using those addons .  I had the same issues when I started with XP10 coming from MSFS it will sink in with time,

With regard to textures, the performance effect is somewhat on/off.

In other words, you can raise texture resolutions without any change in performance, until you hit a resolution setting in which your GPU memory is not enough and then the performance suddenly tanks (i.e. single digits fps).

In the settings menu, under the texture resolution tab, there is a number showing the total memory used by textures. While it does not represents the actual load on your GPU memory, you can neverthless use that number as a rule of thumb. For example, if your GPU has 4GB memory, and the total textures memory listed there is significantly lower than 4GB, then your texture resolution setting is not probably a bottleneck for performance and you can concentrate on other settings to tune performance.

Of course, that number can change depending on the location you're currently at.

You'll probably find a new beta waiting by then.

Thanks. I needed to hear that. ;) And I will certainly use the default Europe stuff for now!

EDIT

Thanks for the memory tip, Murmur! I will keep an eye on that number!

Glad to help and if you want something for Austria let me know. There is a site dedicated for XPlane scenery.

I'm very pleased with the HD mesh add-on even in Europe.  As others have noted, XP11 uses the new European autogen even if add-on mesh is used.

An observation I don't believe I've seen made yet: One of the things that might be an issue for people reporting poor FPS is that default ground traffic is apparently at very high levels in XP11, which was always a trade-off on XPX.

And there no longer seems to be a traffic slider. (seems like some things have been consolidated into one master slider that moves everything up at once so that maximum objects, for instance, also means maximum road traffic, now.)

Something to consider if nobody has mentioned it, yet.

In the 172 I tuned to the VOR 116.60 ICAO-VABB in that GPS but i don't get any beeps ? I am new to the VOR / NDB etc.. any ideas  ?  I thought it will do beep beeep beeep something like that.

I lose fps when i switch windows using alt-tab but the fps comes back once i am back to the XP11 window.

Zulfi, have you set your RSP accordingly in the GNS and in the source selector in the aircraft ? By beep you mean the morse code, right ?
