So, is P3D3 dead?

Featured Replies

I don't think people staying on older versions is holding back progression. Aces being disbanded is holding back progression. Go watch a video of FSX, P3D V3 and V4 (that's 11 years of progress) and they all look pretty much the same. Yes we have gone 64 bit and volumetric fog etc. But in 11 years! There was more progression in 2 years when a new FS version came out which made it worthwhile to upgrade.

Right now the FSX engine is in the same place as CPUs.  You can spend a lot of money continually upgrading for minimal return.

Hahaha, flying through the soundbarriere has had it's influence on you Ray. Or you need to re-allign your own internal IRS.

Much better following the work done last year. Now possible to fly EGLL-KJFK with 3rd party airports and land with 500Mb+ VAS remaining.

While I agree that the 11-year time span between FS95 and FSX showed much more impressive progress than between FSX and P3D v4, I for one am glad that the development of the flight simulator is in the hands of LM (who are real professionals) instead of game-oriented Microsoft. Ask yourself, did Microsoft have a support forum?  No!  Their customer support was miserable (= non existent), while LM at least listens to us users and replies to questions (not always, but more frequently).

Also, if one demands that the pace of progress be maintained as in the old days up to FSX, you need to have CPU power keep up with that pace. As you implied, the CPU progress has slowed down, so developing a simulator that is ahead of the current hardware capability would result in major performance problems (like back with FS2000), which would deter people from switching even more.

In is no coincidence that almost any time a new MSFS version was released, even owners of the latest hardware struggled with FPS at high settings (except FS2002), while P3D v3 and v4 ran better than the predecessors despite improved graphics.

With FTX Vector out on V4, it's another nail in P3D V3's coffin.

And JV just stated at orbx that they will not abandon fsx or v3

JV is the guru, a visionary that transformed the flight sim world. If he says no to dropping platforms then you better believe it ain't gonna happen !

It's so ironic you chose orbx to push home your vision lol

The clue was in reference to Concorde. If FS Labs don't convert it to 64-bit it can't be flown in v4 and the max speed of Boeings and Airbuses is Mach 0.86. Concorde was 2.5 times faster at Mach 2.0.

Nothing to do with fps.

Fair enough - I misunderstood you, Ray. I've never gotten to the point of enjoying the Concorde (although it's - if not the, then one of the - most beautiful aircrafts ever built.
Happy flying, Ray! Let's hope, that the Concorde won't be forgotten by FSLabs.

Well - he was also the one calling FlyTampa 'Lazy-Asss-Airport-Developers'!

Yes because he will continue to create master pieces in 32 bit, a lot of work across all platforms

Lets face it 2 devs broke away not because they are so passionate about 64 bit but because it's a lot of work to double up.

One thing about JV is he is a straight shooter.

Oh please!

First of all - it's not 2 developers - it's 4 of the top developers in our community, which has decided this.

Secondly, that FlyTampa, FlightBeam, FSDreamTeam and 29Palms decide to abandon 32-bit platforms has nothing to do with laziness, work load or in other ways because they're are working less than other developers! Where did you get that notion???

I applaude the decision and hope more will follow - which they undoubtedly will. It's because these developers prioritize their time developing top quality airports and sceneries and because they're committed to deliver their new sceneries with the newest technologies and techniques incorporated and doesn't won't to be bound by an old SDK.

Show me the contract

They have abandoned  nothing

Just words. Watch them do backflips if supply no equal demand.

Clearly what LM needs going forward is a big influx of newbies. Without that they only have the old diehards who are not intimidated by the "you must upgrade or perish" silly posts

For the record I hope it's a huge success it can only lead to good things however without demand 64 bit could easy go the way of the doh doh.

Turbulent Designs is also on the V4 wagon only. Puts a big smile on my face with all these developers moving forward in life :)

I have gone completely to v4 except for VATSIM flying, where I use v2 so I can have the GTN750. Once that is available, I'm sure v2 will get thrown into a corner somewhere to collect dust...
